This video helped me. As a novice, it was also helpful to have someone else holding the front of the hood open so I could tell them "a tiny bit lower" or "a tiny bit higher" while unscrewing/screwing the top part of the strut. The threads in the hood were very picky about what angle I unscrewed/screwed the strut at.
You are right! It would be a lot easier with a helper. I was a little worried the stick might have damaged the fender when it fell but it was fine. I’m replacing the rear supports soon on that same LX470 soon. I think I’ll get a helper for that video. Glad you found my video helpful. Thanks for the comment!
I called my repair shop here in Atlanta and they wanted to charge me $485 to replace the hood struts. This was after they originally quoted me $285. Another shop wanted to charge $85. I said screw that. I watched your video and ordered the A Premium hood and tailgate struts for $45. My dad was a mechanic, so I thought he might be interested in helping. It did take us about 2 hours for this 15 minute job; we had a very difficult time getting the screws off and we tried 12 and 13mm wrenches. My dad thought we needed the thin type of wrench, but couldn't find his, and refused to allow me to go to town and buy some. He ended up shaving some of the width off his 13mm, and we were able to successfully get the old hood struts off. We were able to use the 12mm (no shaving required) to attach the new struts. Like you, I'll save the tailgate strut replacements for a later date. Your video was instrumental in helping us get the job done and saved me between $40 and $440. It's also caused me to rethink my relationship with my repair shop. Thanks
Wow, $485 seems hard to justify. Even $85 to install seems a bit steep. I'm glad you decided to swap out the struts yourself and spend some quality time working on the car with your dad. Thanks for letting my know you found my video helpful! Your positive feedback is greatly appreciated!
Thanks. Just did my struts. Great tip on undoing the top one first. Super easy fix and saved a lot of money.
