We're Eric & Allison and we're on a journey to find the most interesting places and unique foods this planet has to offer! We've traded in our steady paychecks and permanent home for a life of travel and adventure. Come along and see the world with us!
I don't want to be "that guy" but my dad lost roughly 40% of his lung capacity from pouring a concrete foundation without wearing a respirator. He thought he just had a chest cold after the fact, but it lasted weeks and when he finally went to the doctors they found a bunch of silica in his lungs. Stay safe out there!
Bless ❤
Sorry about your Dad. I agree on this , I see ppl all the time doing concrete and it's flying around in the air. Shiver...
So sorry about your dad. Take care of yourselves doing this. Lung issues suck!!! I'm waiting for a lung transplant 🫁.
Always tape glass before moving it like that. I use painters tape on both sides if you can access them which you could. Years ago I was working out in a GYM and some guy's were moving a large mirror and it broke while they were carrying it out and when it fell to the ground a long jagged protrusion of glass cut through one of the guys stomach on the way down and his guts were hanging out. He had a very very bad day.
🙀
I didn't see any rebar in that shaft, you put some in right? I sure hope so if not, good luck with that!
That's what I was thinking also you need rebar for everything to set right. I hope they use rebar when they do the concrete slab
lol of course they didnt :D
My thoughts too ,not sure how long it will last without it.
So chomps is the new AG1. Cool. Get your money.
Next time rent a bobcat with tracks not tires. Also, once you breathe in concrete dust, it never leaves your lungs
I'm so confused by this, have you really not done any of this stuff before and you're just winging it? Please tell me you put rebar in those cement shafts?
That's what I said.
Me cringing at them not putting the rebar in and thinking to myself GO WATCH WILD WONDERFUL OFF-GRID OR TRENT & ALLIE BECAUSE THEY PUT REBAR IN.
They mounted the timber joists upside down...
Eric and Allison, please wear eye protection (goggles). Eric breaking that window unexpectedly made me shudder. Also, I second what others said about inhalation concerns. You have been using respirators off and on. Keep that up. Someone on one of those home remodeling shows is now attributing bad health to inhalation injury. (Always enjoy your videos - including this latest adventure.)
It doesn’t look like you used Pressure Treated Wood for the Subfloor! You should have! If you didn’t then use a Sealer of some sort, like Thomason Water Sealer, put a couple coats on it. The Joist hangers are upside down, but it will be Ok! When putting down the Plywood just make sure you glue it down as well as screw it. I’m taking it that you are not doing this with Permits! An inspector would have caught these things! If I remember correctly Texas is a little lacks on that. Also I would use a 3/4 inch plywood at least on the subfloor!
Are the joist hangers on the outside edge on upside down?
Yes! Yes they are
Looked like it
yep every single one of them is upsidedown 😅😅😅
yep but look like they are just placed not fixed
but yes upside down
Don't you need permits and inspections in Texas?
That’s what I was thinking, but maybe it depends on county you are in. Interesting
I am an architect in California and have been watching these guys for a while. Eric knows Sketch Up which a lot of architects use. I think he may have an Ace up his sleeve by being licensed in which case he can sign off his drawings. Either that or the house is small enough square footage wise to not need a permit.
Wear your safety glasses!
You guys are a hoot 😊😊. Good luck with the renovations, I can't wait for the final results.
Please wear eye protection especially with the nail gun.
It's hard to tell from the video , but is your house on cinderblocks and not on a cement foundation? I am also thinking it might be easier to start from scratch.
No rebar or concrete form tubes in the footers?! 🫣
"How hard can it be"? Famous last words lol! You guys got this.....well ya better cause we're all watchin lol 😜
Is your wood pre-treated?
I would hope so considering the potential for termites and rot is considerable there (I used to live in the same area of Texas). Treated lumber on the exterior, esp part that comes into contact with ground won’t stop termites/rot. But it will slow them down.
If you're not sure what to do, I suggest consulting Raising Voyagers in Italy, Vanwives in Canada, Mr and Mrs Adventure in Portugal or Max and Occy in Australia
Great suggestions. Adding Martijn Doolaard! He’s an incredible craftsman
Also Ambition Strikes.
Wait, do the metal detector, before you build!!!!!!! GOLD
Hundreds if not thousands of resources for basic construction techniques. Videos, books, etc. Absolutely no reason to “wing it”. You’ll still likely make mistakes, so you won’t miss out on the clicks. And please don’t work at risky tasks like that window removal while alone! Wear safety glasses when using that air nailer! Have a beefy first aid kit handy. We do not want to see a video episode from the ER!
This is what I cannot understand? its genuinely driving me a little crazy. Ive watched so many home builds from people who were brand new, and they took each step of the way seriously because of both safety and investment.
Hey Allison, ever seen the chin scar of Harrison Ford in the movies? It's from a nailer similar to the power nailer you're using.
Nope. He crashed his Volvo PV544 into a telegraph pole when he was 21. Scar was from the wound made by the steering wheel.
Both doing amazing! (Even if it does look like Alison is doing most of the work! 💪😂) Well done! (but please put a mask on when dealing with concrete, concrete dust is not good for the lungs) 👍
You guys are great! Love from back home!
Ps. Your ad segments are the only ones I can actually sit through fully! They are hilarious 👌👌👌
Love watching you guys: Do you have an approved set of plans and maybe a building permit?
In the UK you have an insane process of building regs to go through on even the most basic home conversions - apparently in the US you can just build whatever you want with no experience and no need to demonstrate youre even carrying out the build to meet regulations.... crazy...
Yay!!! Another one. I'm so looking forward to your house journey! Sending lots of good vibes to you Allison and Eric! ☀️💗🙂
BTW guys all your hangers are upsidedown. the joices are supposed to rest on them as they give additional support
I’m loving it. I’m so going to be learning from your experiences. Good luck and stay positive.
Great video start with all that inuendo.....while showing a giant "SCREW" !!
I'm happy to say that UK Chomps are entirely different beasts.... toffee covered with chocolate.
Though we do have similar meat sticks to yours.....under a different brand name.
Keep up the hard work chaps, you're doing great 👏🏻👏🏻
Seriously, you guys did Clementine ( more sexual inuendo?? ), so this project should be a walk in the park. Cool that you both get along so well. Both of you will definitely enjoy this project when you bring it to fruition. Go TEAM!!!!
I’m seeing a lot of negative comments about this not done right or that and the other. But I applaud y’all and the effort you guys are putting in. Remember this isn’t the main house it’s just a tiny house which would be the ideal spot to start if you’re wanting to learn. Mistakes will be made but won’t be as drastic compared to the big house. You live and learn, trial and error. I know in the end it’s going to be amazing and the knowledge you’ll have when it comes to the big house will make it all worth it. Gotta start somewhere!
Hello from Chattanooga Tennessee. Awesome attitude 😎 and awesome job 👍😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
My god, you guys are going great!
I've looked at properties that needed work and thought "that's going to need a big team", so colour me enlightened! You're inspirational!
I'm really enjoying this adventure, look forward to every new video, its brilliant
You did a great job! Give yourselves a pat on the back.
Amazing work. So glad to see you guys building for the future in Texas!
🎉🎉🤗🤗💕💕🇿🇦🇿🇦💪💪🏆🔨🎥👍
when will y'all be doing a Q&A I have a funny question I want to ask
Great job guys 😁 and yes I hate those gas nailers as well 🙀
Well done with all your work so far ❤ This is going to be great
Don't mess around with glass 😫 cant watch
Time to say goodbye.😓 I am really happy that you fullfilled your Dream of your Own House but i am also sad. Your Channel was one of the ones i loved the Most. Sadly a lot of Channels turned into House renovation Channels and thats something i am not interested in at all. It’s sad when you Followed for years and was always happy when a new vlog came out. Also the comment section changes directly to everybody Knows best and will give their advice. Not the positive vibes i want to have near me. I am wishing you all the Best and Good Luck with your Project.❤️❤️ Thanks for the Last years. I am sure you will get a lot of new subscribers because Renovation seems to be „the“thing now on UA-cam
Sad you have to go, totally understand not your thing, agreed with the wanting good vibes 💖
Don’t you need rebar in those holes?
I was wondering that too. 😊
For what they are building it's fine.
it's a tiny house
@@MegaKencam
Interesting … are you a builder?
My husband is and he just said they really should have put some rebar in there … but we are in U.K and building structures are very different here.
Rebar never hurts
So many things are wrong that you are doing. First : cement dust is nothing to joke about. No rebar in those holes? Really? Get a laser level... I still love watching your videos, miss the travel ones.
They mounted the timber joists upside down...
Better cover and protect that wood from rain.
No need if its off the ground.
@@jstar1000 It's not good if moisture is trapped inside the structure as you build over it though.
@@jstar1000 looks like all the wood is sitting right on the dirt.
@@Nemrai They are in Texas, it will be fine, 24 hours it will all be dry. I do inspections on new construction in Texas, no one every covers wood framing because of rain, ever. If it gets wet from rain you just wait until it dries which is about 24 hours after it stops raining typically.
@@Nemrai The stacked wood on the ground waiting to build should be covered from rain but the framing they just installed is fine.
At 15:30 was waiting for "3 x's a lady"🎵🎵🎵
Lovely video both 🥰🥰
That dust control not mud💩
Joist brackets look upside down
That’s because they are.
Yes right on time ❤
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A tiny house is still tiny if it’s over 400 ft.². They’re talking about THOWs or tiny houses on wheels. It’s not a real tiny unless it’s 399 ft.² or less (still only talking about THOWs).
Honestly, Ive watched you guys for years and enjoyed the travels. I dont mean this with an toxicity or negativity. Watching this build is making me extremely stressed. The Cavalier attitude is not the right approach when youre building a substantial structure that requires at least some level of prior understanding, or at least a demonstration that youre attempting to learn and thereby explain how youre learning as you go. I've watched many home builds from people who similarly have no idea what theyre doing - but they get people in to give advice, they demonstrate how theyre learning, and they reassure the audience by doing so that certain things are very serious.
I get that this meant to be fun, but also a lot of the things youre doing seem to be tagged with the caveat of -- well lets hope this works! -- that is NOT how building works. Because you will find out why it doesnt work in catastrophic and expensive fashion down the line... I almost cannot bear to watch further... but its also such that i almost cant look away...
Seriously though - I do not understand why there has been no explanation to the audience about relevant building regulations or guidance - why have we not as yet got a structural engineer out, and just film having a chat with them - that is some really key basic stuff? Why not show us some plans or explanations as to why you know what youre doing is fine.. its bonkers.
@@jefblack7678 theres a big difference between charmingly new to something - and wilfully uninformed - they put the floor joist brackets on UPSIDE DOWN..
@lokent6592 nevermind I just realized you are just a chronic complainer, I will just let you compain
Love you guys and your adventures!
Safety first when operating equipment PPE personal protective equipment:
ie safety glasses!!
OMG... YOU MAKE ME, REALLY LAUGH!!!!! 🤣🤣 Thank you.❤ You are very ambitious and I love that about you too. Keep up the good work. 👍
I've read some of the comments about not having rebar in the footings. I agree with them. I'm not a construction expert but my brother has a masonry background so I know a little by helping him out.
Hopefully as you continue on you consult experts when it comes to electric and plumbing issues. A house is different from an RV.
Y'all are so amazing!!! This is looking wonderful! You've got this! Thanks for sharing with us! ❤🙏 from SC, Jane
I am overwhelmed and amazed by you folks. Do you have a background in this or are you just watching UA-cam to learn? You seem to know what you’re doing but of course I have no idea how to do any of it but I’m still super impressed. I’m gonna go out and build me a house now watching you folks.
This is why I love watching you guys. You guys are humble, funny, and don't claim to be expert like most UA-camrs do. We all learn from mistakes along the way, and watching others' YT videos doesn't make you an expert. I can't wait to see the finished product. If you guys ever here in San Francisco, I love to treat you guys to some dim sums in Chinatown.
LoL 😂😂I wish I had your age and power. Love to see your projects. We bought land in tennessee without electricity, septic, well about 40,000 we spend it is was smart to buy land with houses even if it condition was terrible save a bit of money. The only thing about Texas is scorpion. 😮😮🤪🤪
You guys are really brave --- doing all this on camera and opening yourselves up to MAJOR kibbitzing by all nature of "experts."
Yes, another Root Joke! That got me so tired, I stopped to drink a Root Beer! Did you know that you could spin the auger the opposite when bringing it up out of the hole? That way all the dirt flings out and away from the hole! When cutting lumber and you want a square end, use a speed square against the base of the saw to keep the cut it square.
Congrats to both of you for always trying to tackle even the hardest of jobs. Remember everyone makes mistakes, even pros, but they leave you with theirs to find later. Y' all can fix them as you make them. Good Luck on the tiny house!
You guys are amazing😊 Thank you for showing it all, from the garbage clean up to the building process. I look forward to watching your progress. See ya next week❤
Have you considered putting screen down underneath the floor joists to keep the bugs scorpions from coming in?
❤😂❤
If it was me ,the first thing I'd do is loose the imperial tape measure.
Building in metric is so much easier.
Not sure if the regulations are different in the states to Australia, but here ,the post holes would need to have steel reinforcement as well as concrete.
Anyway I admire your can do attitude ,so many young ones now don't have that.
A mudmixer machine is where it’s at. If you plan on doing any more sizable concrete work look into renting one
Best commercial ever for chomps, I already buy them but that just made me want more😂. Thanks for the laughter 😃
You guys are awesome! Sounds like there are a lot of experts on here that would love to help! 😜. Keep doing you!
Allison and Eric my 2 favorite vloggers! You guys are great!
Crushing it! You’ve done so much already
You both always give everything a go!! Thats living xx😊
You two are doing a good job building your tiny home. Next time you rent a bobcat try to get one tith tracks they do a better job.
Mud wrestling??? Take my money!! ❤😂😅
No Sonotubes in Texas? Looking good. Keeping it in square is a goal. I did not build the house we live in, but the professionals who did build it kept it "mostly" in square. We've been living in it now for just over 40 years and most of it is still in square, but not all of it. You learn how to deal with that as you already found out.
Wow you guys are moving along at a pretty good pace. Can't wait to see when y'all are done. Keep up the good work
Beer and Pizza sounds really Good 🙂😉
It's looking good, cant wait for the next video!!!
Best sponsor video ever. Thank you for at least making it fun!
The lack of rebar may come back to haunt you but i'm no concrete expert.
It's known redheads can access their adrenaline when needed, she lifted those like a boss.
Oh my... you two are so amazing and adorable ❤❤❤❤
Yall are doing great!!! I love watching yall learn all these new skills!
Mr. Robert Feline, to be accurately formal. 😸
A lot of work but I’m sure it’s exciting also
oh my god, I cant believe I didnt see it before... why did you put the joist brackets on upside down?? The horizontal wooden joist is meant to sit IN the bracket, the way you have mounted it will not give it any structural support..... I just cant....
Next concrete pour sign your names you need to put your name on your house be proud!
😂I would pay to see you guys roll in the mud. Just saying 😆🫴
the next time you rent a robert cat... get one with the trax
I'm impressed! Good job you guys!!
james freeman youtube channel
it's not how good of carpenter you are... but how well you can hide your mistakes
I built a desk our of maple wood. You have to sand for an eternity because maple shows every dent and scratch when it is stained. I had a deep dent on the top of the desk and I used spit to swell the wood up to remove the dent. It took me quite a long time to sand it, whenever I had time to work on it. It took 6 months to a year to sand it. Eventually I used enough spit to get the dent out. Hiding the mistake of putting the dent in was about as difficult as I've ever done. Now, some 35+ years later it is the second desk in our office and I can't tell where the dent was. All because of my spit!
Shouldn’t the concrete in the post holes have been agitated or vibrated to ensure you don’t have air pockets?
Maybe a bigger deal in northern states that have serious freezes. 🤷🏻♀️
HAHAHAA! That intro!
Coming along nicely...
I am very impressed!
Drill baby DRILL!!!
Good work take it ez
Just saying. Coming here for all the comments on what to do or not to do is interesting
Its because people who do have a clue are getting extremely stressed watching this unfold.
