Great podcast, Matt! I have known about Ben and Adam for some time, but not Nick - and it was good to get to hear from him too. I will definitely check out his work now, too!
An interesting take on the three you tubers and their motivations on hosting their YT channels - all respected clearly. I’ve not seen much of Ben before but Nick & Adam were true to their down to earth and unpretentious selves. Top guys! These guys stand out for all the right reasons! Most discerning viewers will see through the BS of the majority of UA-camrs.
Well said, and I couldn't agree more. Your last sentence though - I agree that most discerning viewers would... but it doesn't explain why the biggest channels have the most BS. Maybe most folks just aren't very discerning? What do you think?
@ I’m sure you’re right Matt, my point really was that your guests were open and honest to their experiences and appraisal of YT as a platform, negatives and positives. Not all YTubers are as open about their motives… as for the question about discerning viewers?.. I guess that’s always going to be an unknown. As a 60+ full time photographer what do I know anyway .. the older I get the more bemusing things become in this world & profession😏. I enjoyed your podcast 👍
I heard that! I think I keep forgetting that 90% of the content is geared towards beginners (makes sense). There's a lot of really bad takes though and a ton of content that is designed to be "clickable" versus something that makes you think, question, improve. Hard to weed out quality. It's honestly a reason I why I don't spend much time consuming YT content myself.
Great video. Thanks. Enjoyed that, insightful into the business/practicalities of photography. Really funny as well. Ben seems a different character from his videos.
Great idea to interview these 3 great photographers. Ben is my absolute fav photographer on UA-cam (and in general) and would not have discovered him without UA-cam. Love Adam's work as well. Wasn't familiar with Nick but will definitely follow his work now. Thanks for sharing
Nice to hear that my favorite UA-camrs have high frequency "CREATION" stress because I have high frequency "VIEWER" stress. I certainly prefer less frequent but more interesting and inspiring content. Thanks to all of you for your good work!
Nice interviews, Love these guys , watch them all especially Nick, to be honest I don't like gear talk, I'm not interested at all, but realise that sometimes companies sponsor YT's and they have to include it. Tips and tricks turn me right off as well . Agree with Nick it likes regularity, which is so exhausting. You have to make a living though. You guys have a wealth of experience and I enjoy watching you guys in the field that's what I like the most. 😊 keep it up
Right on, thanks Christine! I wish I had more time to record stuff from in the field... it's a crazy amount of work to do well... love your comment - thank you!
great discussion. I've long been a fan of these three, especially because of the heavy focus on the artistry rather than the endless barrage of gear reviews. No doubt I've improved dramatically and even started my own due to the influence of these three. awesome episode!
what a refreshing anniversary video, and all without the “holy kraal” of the algorithm. and .... a great selection of people to talk to. I believe this is called quality. Kind regards from the “other end of the world” (Austria) Klaus
Great subject, I was such an idiot I started my channel around 2009, I mostly just made videos in the spring when the Grizzly and Wolf shooting was best. I didn't have a TV with UA-cam on it so I never watched it for photo info because I spent too much time at my desk I didn't watch recreationally because my ass was to sore. After my photo tours got to busy I largely stopped doing video = Opps, had I realized who other were marketing their destination tours would have really upped my tour game. To cut expenses, I canned Dish and went to Roku that had UA-cam, from my easy chair I found how the train left the station without me. I was pondering moving to the east of a change of scenery that led to UA-cam searching each state for landscape photographers while searching Maine/New Brunswick I came across Fototripper, then all his friends. I should have got Roku sooner. Fototripper once remarked exaggeratedly that all the UA-camr's were British, and proportionally I believe are, at least the ones that take you on their excursion. Not that the USA doesn't have a lot of UA-cam photographers but is boringly ALL gear reviews. So, I exaggerate. It is a relief that you all aren’t gear all the time, although I have learned a lot from the Post Processing photogs. I deleted most of my early videos because in the early days of UA-cam we had a 100-megabyte limit and they look hideous on today’s 5k TVs At 71 years old my adventure photography is nearing non-existence and I’m glad many of you are taking my one armchair. Adventures. Because of Adam’s Rain Forest Work inspired me to limp though Olympic National Forest in October. Thanks for the inspiration Adam. Cheers
Hi Adam, That all makes sense - and I agree gear reviews can be boring for folks that have been shooting for awhile. I think most of the YT content is geared towards new photographers, which makes sense given the amount of churn there is in photography. I hope you find the conversations on this podcast/channel to meet some niche desires. Have a great week!
Yeah, I totally agree... and, I think they'd have a uphill battle ahead. I'm not saying my videos are anything special, but I've found growth here to be almost non-existent!
I've noticed your low subscriber count and find that weird. Photo interviews might not be the hottest topic for photographers in general, but you've many interesting episodes and I expected a lot more views and subscribers.
It's a bit of a mystery to me as well, hence some of my sarcasm during the episode about what generally seems to work on this platform (loud, shouty personalities that are obsessed with gear).
Hey Matt. Great content. A suggestion - while the emphasis on photographic vision is perhaps the most important content that your provide, please give some thought to a panel talking about the nature photography business - comparing today's income streama of, say, prints, workshops, stock, books, etc. Thanks!!
Hey Moris, Thanks for the feedback and suggestion. While I've not done a panel on that exact subject, per-se, it is certainly something that's been covered on several other episodes of the show. Probably could just control-f on this page and search for "business" and find some relevant episodes. I wish they were more well organized for you in that regard. It's on my to-do list. www.mattpaynephotography.com/page/f-stop-collaborate-and-listen/

Glad you enjoyed it! Nick is super cool and was on the show back around the same time you were!
@@MattPayne Wow, I missed that one! I'll have to go back and listen to it.
@@BrendaTharp honestly, it was one of my favorite recordings! www.mattpaynephotography.com/gallery/conversation-with-nick-carver/
1:18:30 I lived all my life in the dumpy desert and I love it! Nick has given me a greater appreciation for it through his work.
Right on! I think it can be easy to dismiss that part of the world but there's so much beauty to be found there!
Great conversation.Thank you gentlemen for sharing your experiences. Wishing you all the best.
Thanks for tuning in! =)

I follow several photography UA-cam channels and I think even if they started UA-cam today they'd stand out as special. Great interview!

I was hoping to get through an interview with Ben Horne without mentioning spandex.
Hahahahahahahahahah I TOTALLY get it!
