    I'm watching for late friend, Sir Derek Ffowlds and another wonderful, subtle, unselfiish actor, Kevin Whately as the Beeb's constant juxtaposition of Catholic iconography with violence and insanity quickly goes from appalling to insulting to boring. Anna C-M pipped me at the post for a major role decades ago - better connections, haha, and hell hath not fury, etc... Seriously speaking, however, she is a fine actress and never disappoints...Pheloung's music is hypnotic and "addictive." but the relentless gloom of the Morse character, albeit understanding in the context of his alcoholism, is wearying after a while...

    I think the two problems with this episode are:
    The character of Jane Robson is thoroughly unlikeable - the actress was miscast and is weak and whiny in every scene; and there is nothing for Lewis to do.
    Otherwise interesting and the title is a clever play on words that addresses the double narrative.

    • @wildwoodsgirl1706
      @wildwoodsgirl1706 2 роки тому

      Not ebery character is likeable, hence the word antagonist. Some aren't the actual bad guy. Whiny people do exist & writers often show traits to make people see themselves, especially in the mystery genre. But in any story there's often a character you'd never want to act like, but have met someone who did. Stories show us human behavior, not just lovable behavior, for a reason.

    Somehow I had gone all these years without seeing this episode of Morse. To be honest it is not one of the best, in fact it is one of the worst. The actual story is good but the direction leaves much to be desired and the screenplay is not of the usual standard. The comments regarding war crimes and racism are bizarre as it is clear from the story that the victors were just as guilty as the vanquished. Historically it most be remembered that the idea of war crimes is relatively recent, mostly codified by the various Geneva Conventions every clause even now is ignored on an almost daily basis. The Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 were among the first formal statements of the laws of war and war crimes in international law and banned the use of expanding bullets in war, despite which Israeli Occupation Forces have shot thousands of Palestinians with them claiming a very flexible definition of war.

    • @voraciousreader3341
      @voraciousreader3341 3 роки тому +3

      How do the Israeli’s fit into this?? I think you use comments about TV shows to insert your own political bias, which is childish. The war crimes committed by the Japanese against ALL of their enemies were horrendous and from a different age of violence. They forced thousands of “enemy” women to act as sex slaves for soldiers, being forcibly raped by up to 20 Japanese soldiers a day, without respite. They were vicious to enemy prisoners, as well, despising those who surrendered, starving them, beating them, forcing them to work when they could barely stand, inflicting absolutely despicable means of torture. In contrast, the US treated the few Japanese prisoners they had like kings. Yes, the US dropped atomic bombs, but if you know nothing of their determination to never surrender, then you know nothing of the task required to invade Japan and subdue the residents. My father was a Marine during the Battle of Saipan, and island roughly 12 miners long, bu 5.5 miles wide. He saw how the enemy mutilated the bodies of American soldiers after death. Because the Japanese couldn’t be resupplied, due to a sea battle that disabled or sank many of their ships; as a result, their commander ordered them to fight to the last man. So, out of roughly 30,000 Japanese soldiers, the US forces had to kill 29,000 of those soldiers, on that tiny island, mostly by using flame throwers in caves and pillboxes. THAT is what is meant by the Japanese when they fight to the last man. People who make such glib judgements as you did in your comment generally know only a little, or are eager to take a provocative stance, simply to be provocative. The study of history demands much more than that.

      There have always been codes by various terminology & there have always been enemies who broke those codes. What makes you think the point isn't that victors are often just as guilty, that war is rotten in general? It can be necessary to stop a constant threat or violent attacks or invasion etc, but often those who have the might to stop them are imperialist themselves. Etc, etc. We know. I have an idea. How about if before writing any episodes for any shows, all screenwriters contact you & run the idea past you first, and then all shows can be written specifically for you & be to your liking, & screw the rest of humanity? Would that suit your "needs"?! Go sit down. Your self importance is overworked & needs a rest. 🙄😂😒

      @@raniaelkhayat2747Cordial exchange welcome any time. I am bingeing out on Kavanaugh QC at present, but do so w Morse too... & Foyle's War. PS. You know he was married to the also if not quite equally famous Sheila Hancock, 10 years his senior, until he died. She has written two (bio & autobio) books. She is the daughter of the crazy, beloved Tony Hancock. Thaw was a true-blue. His most (only) "womanising" role was perhaps in The Sweeney series... bec it was written that way. What a darling man. PPS. Look at his longed for relationship w Gemma Jones in the first Morse!

      mckavitt13 wow. It seems I have a lot to watch now. I read about Morse in a book about crime writers and decided to check it out and now I watch everyday. I discovered there are two spin-offs so I will check them out and now Cavanaugh QV (thanks for the recommendation). There is something soothing about watching Morse although it is all about crime. I enjoying it so much. I just get he female a characters in the first few episodes we’re not comfortable with him or his advances but as the show goes on I only wish he can find someone to date! I am now in Season 4. Thanks for this communication and stay safe :)

      @@raniaelkhayat2747 Grand. Know that Foyle's War, begun in 2002, the year of John Thaw's death, stars the most wonderful Michael Kitchen. Enjoy!
