  • Imagine a broadleaf evergreen tree with a native range extending into southern Ohio! Such a tree would describe the American holly!
The American holly (Ilex opaca) is the most cold hardy broadleaf evergreen tree in the world, surviving temperatures in its native range down to -20°F (-29°C). These temperatures are too low for the southern magnolia and evergreen sweetbay magnolia within their native range. This also doesn't include shrubby members of the heath family - such as the rosebay rhododendron and mountain laurel.
