"One train overshot the station slightly and had to back up!" In Budapest, the full metro trains also had to stop at a specific position to be able to open their doors (all metro lines back then, M1-M3). If the drivers missed that sweet spot, they had to reverse their entire train a few metres. It sometimes took them 3 or 4 attempts to properly stop at the station, chugging a few metres back and forth every try... Haven't had that problem for a while now, so they probably changed some stuff. Or maybe I just travel less by metro, preferring above ground transport...
I remember riding this back in 2020, I rode this to the Long Term parking elevators to go see them. Little did I know back then, that those elevators would be modernized in the future, and this very monorail would be no more...
Reminds me of the Heathrow Pod, except the Heathrow Pod drives on wheels and seems to be smaller and less comfortable. I love the old look of the Tampa Monorail.

Nearly everywhere on the internet says these cars were built by Bombardier, but I know for a fact (and have photographic proof) that these six cars were built from the ground up by a company called Aerotrans in Springville, Utah. Maybe it was a subcontracting deal, but the three news articles I can find about Aerotrans securing the contract to build these cars make no mention of Bombardier's involvement.
Unfortunately this system is now out of service as of the beginning of this month. Due to high maintenance and running costs It is getting removed. It was originally supposed to be removed from service in September but they have decided to do it early due to decreased traffic from the virus. Its will be getting replaced by moving walkways on the 4th floor of the garage similar to the economy parking garage setup at the airport
Awe, I will miss this train when it's gone. Honestly, I am surprised that it lasted this long. Its really a short walk to get anywhere I the parking garage, and depending on where you park on the loop, it may be faster to walk.
@@Luke_Starkenburg I agree man. Being born and raised here in Tampa it has always been one of my favorite things to go see along with many other things at my beautiful home airport. Its truly sad to see at go because of how unique it was and how they retrofitted it into a praking garage 30 years ago. Thank you alot for this video man the quality is exceptional and I really appreciate the time you put in it.
I was at the Tampa airport a few years back. I traveled on something that went from one section to another, but it didn’t look like this. It was more like an elevator car. Or do I have the wrong airport?

Owen Chua I love PRT systems, but honestly some moving walkways would do the job better. The distance is pretty short. I would even say, don’t bother putting in moving walkways, just have a path through the garage for people to walk on.
City leaders should think about how to extend this system all the way into downtown Tampa. It should include a stop in the West Shore area at Shore Shore Blvd and Cypress, then go on with a stop at Midtown, the University of Tampa and final destination in downtown.
I spend a lot of time around the airport and the monorail has now been out of service for a few months now. The cars are sitting there but look to be in rough shape.
This is sad but not unexpected. Someone at the airport told me that they were planning on shutting the monorail down soon, and this was in February 2020 just before Covid. With the reduction in travel I doubt this will reopen. Honestly, it is very easy to walk the whole route and the train really isn’t needed.
@@Luke_Starkenburg yeah i went before COVID then 2021 went to the airport and went looking for it and it didn’t exist so we asked someone and they said it was gone
Sasa Ilic I knew about this for forever, but forgot about it for many years. I flew into TPA recently and was wondering if this was still running so I decided to check it out! I’m glad I did!
In November 2018, the former E floor was changed to level 2. Later on, a 1st floor was added for high vehicles. This means that former levels 1 to 6 are now 3 to 8. Also, these things have been running since 1991!
Depends. In the terminal it's on the 5th floor. I don't remember in the parking garage, but I think it's on the 3rd floor there. But that may have changed since the airport moved the rental cars to their new facility.
2:47: We are about to depart, for your safety please stand clear of the doors and hold the handrails firmly at all times. Your next stop will be the Green station in the long term parking garage. Please remain on board for the following stations, the Brown station and all of the main terminal stations. Note that I am using colors instead of the pilot's names, because it is easier to refer your parking spot as a color.
This was taken on a Sunday in February, just pre-Covid. I saw some passengers using the system, but also a few people just walking. As much as I love trains, people movers, and monorails, this system seems like a waste. The system would be much better served via moving walkways, or just by walking! It was probably a 4-5 minute walk from one end of the garage to the other. The only good think was that the trains came about every 2 minutes. An airport employee told he that she heard this was shutting down permanently soon, and this was in February 2020.
That is such a shame, as I've never ridden it and it's really one of a kind. I only was at TPA for one round-trip flight in 2005, and didn't know it existed. Why did it shut down? Budget cuts? Maintenance issues? Safety concerns?
It's nice but it's like back in the 80's style .. I'm not saying it's bad .. but .. it's outdated ! If you got to Japan, Singapore, HongKong, Dubai, London .. it's way different.

Close, 1991.
The shuttle trains out to the airsides are original to the airport design and date back to 1971. Though they have been upgraded several times since.
But still better than nothing like L.A.X.
