That depends on which finishers you are talking about. A lot of the HCTP finishers were superstar specific and had superstar likeness to them compared to finishers now. Example: Kane’s chokeslam. Not to mention HCTP had some finishers that looked more fluent in terms of picking someone up. Example: F5 with Brock actually having to get under the superstar and slightly adjust them

Here comes the pain really did a good job nailing the personalities of the wrestlers with the taunts after hitting there move.

The taunts after the moves, and the selling by the wrestlers in HCTP is just so much more satisfying.
That Sweet Chin Music from HCTP is so perfect. No stupid waiting when the opponent has already turned around, no oversell by the opponent, and the HBK taunt afterwards that should be interruptable and added with a pin combo if they ever make it look that good again.
There was a pin finish version. And it was interruptable.

The new pedigree is so underwhelming. Here comes the pain put a variation of the move in the game where the opponent jumps and lands right on their head just like hunter did to a jobber back in the day

The moves in HCTP are just so meaty. Not realistic, but realism isn't always better. I played the hell out of that game and I still love a lot of those animations.

2K14 was on par somewhat, it actually gave me HCTP vibes tbh.
Finishes in 2k look not devastating at all. Its not nostalgia, hctp has better looking finishers since them bouncing on the mat adds impact compared to 2k where they just lie straight on the floor

the impact of the finishers make them more fun in HCTP. Obviously 2k22 has more realism but the finishers are less fun to hit as there is less impact.
when I think of HCTP I always think of how much fun it was to use Goldberg and how impactful all the moves felt

I still play HCTP...and also the new version of wwe games.. But I must say.. No new version has that enjoyment and fun... Because
1. Smack is very fast in HTPC, unlike new games where you have to wait the bar to full.
2. The sound effects combination with right order of moves feels soo right...
3.You can run and play at very fast speed unlike others

Although HCTP is probably the best wrestling game it was the finishers that let it down. They looked good for the time, it’s just that when you sweet chin, pedigree, tombstone etc someone you expect them to be flat out cold and not rolling around or holding their abdomen or for them to almost kick out on the three and start rolling around when your music starts playing.

Camera angles make a big difference. Over the last decade, most wrestling games attempt to simulate the highly edited and quick cut camera angles of which modern wrestling now has taken form. Wrestling from the attitude era of the 90s all the way up to 2003 didn't have this, and in my opinion was better, plus storylines were better, too.

Its amazing how HCTP wasn't considered a wrestling sim, but it still captured the vibe and excitement of that era perfectly.

Funnily enough it's a lot more of a simulator than the new shit. The arcadey gameplay worked a *lot* better because WWE was an over-the-top action show, but the 2K games treat it like some real life sport, and as such they're boring sports games made by sports game developers. It's stupid.
Hctp finishers made you feel like you actually killed your opponent especially when the controller vibrates.

True,notice in the hctp players have control over rey mysterios finisher meaning you can manually control the whole thing and land the legs wherever you want,it just gives you more freedom and satisfaction to be able to land a finisher precisely whereas in 2k its all one button press animation clicks and game does the rest lol.

HCTP still takes the W. Not only were the moves more impactful but the signature mannerisms were there. Each wrestler had their own unique fighting stance. Which is a key component because it makes the moves transition smoothly in and out of the finishers. If you notice anytime someone does their finisher in 2K22 they revert back to a boring robotic copy & paste default stance. Making the finisher look like an afterthought. Also keep in mind that this video doesn't even showcase the dynamic camera angles and effects during the HCTP finishers. That shows how well these animations and sound design have aged.
The sound is terrible. But damn it was intense

Older games made finishers FEEL like finishers. They made it FEEL like you were putting that last exclamation point on the match. Nowadays, they go with realism over sizzle. I get it....but I also miss the old days where when you hit the Stunner, you may as well have dropped a tactical nuke.

Finishers used to be a badass moment, especially when SMACKDOWN! floated across the screen right before hitting one and the fans going nuts. Now it’s been downgraded to essentially just another move and it lacks character. 2K needs to give the license up.

I love the brutal impact of moves in HCTP especially with aerial moves. 2k has done a lot better job making moves feel more impactful in WWE 2K22. But Goldberg's Spear in HCTP has yet to be topped.

After getting hit by a finisher in 2k22, the wrestler simply drops dead, whereas in HCTP the wrestler reacts in a satisfactory way. 👌

I miss HCTP. I miss those good days where games were not so focused on realism that it makes them entertaining. You can tell the majority of the HCTP finishers were more 'devastating' and were just pleasing to hit. Sigh

Actually, the AI on that timeline was not that advanced that's why it was like that at that time, because I remember that game arrives in 2003 and in 2004. The graphics of HCTP was the most realistic game of that period.

Hctp animations and how the wrestler acts after the finisher is top tier 2k still doesn’t have that attention to detail
I’ve realized one of the main issues with recent wrestling games is that they try to make the finishers look more cinematic & it doesn’t really capture the in game moment how HCTP does. Plus, HCTP was wayyyy more dramatic with the moves & crowd hype that perfectly matched how and why wrestling was so exciting. You don’t see that too often in recent games because they try to make it too “realistic” but there should be a line between realistic and fun. In HCTP, I felt like the players had more control over the characters and environment. I could deadass just be roaming around the ring and get gore’d randomly. I could put a ladder on the announcers ring and frog splash what the camera angle makes it seem like from 50 feet. Those camera angles were super important too! If they would keep the graphics of today and the physics & excitement of HCTP, that would probably be the best wrestling game ever.
HCTP played more like an arcade game - at the end of the day it’s a video game, the new ones play too realistically like trying to be an EASY sports game or something and THAT is the problem why wresting games of old are more fun as they have that more arcade fell and the new ones trying to be ‘realism’ bring back the rumbles you feel even when you administering a headlock!

In all a series of games WWE 2K physics is terrible!!! Of course, the physics is more enhanced in the HCTP, but it's nice to look at. It is physics that makes HCTP still interesting!!!
Anyone who says the wrestler selling is more realistic in wwe2k22 didn't watch wrestling at it's peak in the attitude era...no one gets hit and just literally lie still glued to the ring...2k needs to get the ratings correct too. Lots of garbage ratings still it's almost as bad as Fifa games

The moves are more dynamic even in HCTP. Why don’t they exaggerate the selling in these newer games? Look at the Stunner reaction vs the new one. Booker’s set ups and finishers had flavor too. Look at Brock’s F5 to Goldberg! Sheesh!

Listen to the sounds of the mat in HCTP. It makes it feel like every move you hit actually had an impact on the match. Like the ring was about to cave in on itself from all that force.
Here Comes The Pain was so much more detail focused when it came to finishers than 2k. Almost all were superstar specific with their mannerisms and even for superstars who used some of the same moves having their own unique variations if they performed it slightly different.

The animation work in Smackdown was phenomenal! Not to mention the screen shake and sound effects made every hit, grab, and slam feel intense as hell. It just isn’t the same nowadays.
Definitely moves hit harder in HCTP but is anyone going to address how much fun it was to fight backstage? The backstage is so damn boring in 2k22!!

I still play mine till this day I got it for Christmas in 2003 when I was 16 and now I'm 34 almost 35 next year Christmas will be 20 years I've had it and played it
The RKO and ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT looks better in WWE 2K22 but everything else I'll give to Here Comes the Pain.
The motion captured moves in 2K games look like the ring is made of concrete. Wrestlers bounce off the mat in an actual wrestling ring. HCTP for the win.
