David Bowie was one of the few white performers to appear on Soul Train. He did Fame, and he also did Golden Years, during his Funk period. This was back in the day when Bowie was wasted all the time, and hanging out with John Lennon.
This was co-written by John Lennon. He also sings backup and plays rhythm guitar on the track. He and Bowie met up in Los Angeles in 1974 during Lennon's "Lost Weekend" year when Yoko banished him to the West Coast to get his act together.

I was a huge Bowie fan before this song came out and first time I heard it, was blown away feeling it was way ahead of its time. I went to the concert in Toronto when the first tour featuring this song rolled out and have seen him twice more since. RIP Genius!!!
When I was in fifth grade, my mom bought me this 45 record, because I begged her to. My class played records during lunch hour. I gave them this record to play. Half way through the song, all the kids in my class asked my teacher to take it off because they didn't like it. After that, the only black kid in my class asked me for the song and the artist. He wanted to buy it. He was huge and very popular, so I felt a little vindication... 😁😁😁
John Lennon wrote or co-wrote three US number ones within a few months in 1974-75: 'Whatever Gets You Thru The Night', Elton John's version of 'Lucy In The Sky' (on which Lennon played and sang backup vocals), and 'Fame' by Bowie.
I was watching a Bowie interview with Conan O'Brien here on UA-cam and he said that Bowie was among the 25 richest in the UK. I found it amazing when you think that there was the royal family and all these diamond miners in Africa and profiteers and other monarchs. Another Bowie song that I like is DJ and the way he has to make fun of them, as you say he is very versatile but Heroes is for me its biggest hit especially the long version.
My favorite Bowie song. Always loved that super dirty fat guitar riff, alongside the funky other rhythm guitars. Perfect. When I learned Lennon co-wrote, that just made it cooler yet. Loved it since I was a little kid (12?) and it was popular.
Other great songs TVC15, Fashion, Panic in Detroit, Cracked Actor, Heroes (live in Berlin), Word on a Wing (Live in Berlin), Stay, Ashes to Ashes, and Wild is the Wind.
BTW, David was a trendsetter, one of the first to do glam rock in the early 70s! You need to see him in this era. His persona of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The song is Moon age Daydream from the movie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. There's footage of it on UA-cam

That's Mr John Lennon on backing vocals! They both wrote this .David and John, my two ultimate favourites! David did it all. Diversity was key to him and keeping up with the times. Please react to the other funky hit, Golden Years. David even appeared in Soul Train with this one. Thx
I really dig what they did on John Lennon's guitar whole note chords he strums twice and the second one is echoed. What magic. I think he used a FuzzTone on those strikes.
David Bowie is a whole genre on his own. I knew you'd love it! Got to do more. Sound and Vision (from his album Low. Nick Lowe was good friend and did a response EP called Bowi and had a song called I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass. Speaking of Nick Lowe, do Cruel To Be Kind. It's Power Pop perfection. Nick was a New Wave pioneer btw) Young Americans China Girl (written for Iggy Pop) The Jean Genie Under Pressure (with Queen) Modern Love Golden Years So many more.... You won't be sorry!
After you have had your fill, prepare yourself for the final boss fight on Bowie's last album Blackstar, recorded as the cancer in his body killed him. It doesn't tug your heart strings, it grabs them and PULLS. Hard.
@@coinneachmaclellan3121 Nice catch. The box set told me JB was earlier. But, google is now telling me that both came out in 1975 with DB being april and JB being december. i stand corrected.
@mozilla2576 Whichever way the influence went they were both great artists and great artists are usually receptive to good music whatever the source...cross-pollination often has great results. Most of the music we listen to, particularly the 20th century forms are perfect examples of that. Given James Brown's long and influential career, David Bowie must have been listening and learning..."what goes around, comes around"...
Bowie could master ANY genre,he was a genius and the coolest man on the planet.
You could say I’m a bit of a fan.
RIP Starman.
I still start to cry thinking about him being gone.

Lennon's input waa minimal. Bowie generously gave him a co-writing credit.

John Lennon on the high harmonies 😎👍
This song is the definition of “funky”
In addition to Lennon is also Carlos Alomar, former James Brown guitarist. The song's writing credits are to all three of these songwriters.

A MUST HEAR legendary & iconic group & classic track,, Santana "Black Magic Woman"
I drove every one of my country loving friends crazy with this one.
Back To Back Bowie.... "Let's Dance" - "Fame".... two entirely different tunes, is what we get from this level talents.
This song is from my favorite Bowie musical era. It's so funky & fun.
John Lennon helped write this song.
And singing background
Its an absolute classic.

This whole album is very funky.
I think Bowie and Lennon knew a little about "Fame"... "Cool As Can Be"
The Thin White Duke always changing and seemed to be a step ahead of everybody else.
One of my favs from Mr. Bowie. Great lyrics and attitude. The beat and arrangements are as you said.... "TOO GOOD!!"
For a totally different vibe from David Bowie I would recommend WILD IS THE WIND x
These brothers can SLING DA FUNK in every direction,, The Average White Band "Cut The Cake" (Live On Soul Train Video A MUST!!)
Great reaction my music lovin' brother & exactly why i suggested it,, I knew you would enjoy it.

Another favourite Bowie song of mine is Panic in Detroit from Aladdin Sane album. The bass here is soooo gooood
Young Americans, official live video a must! You'll see a young Luther Vandross, as one of David's back up singers

This is one of those "I clicked so fast" offerings that really delivers⚡ Your observations express perfectly the wonder that was David Bowie✨
He heard funk then decided to make his own.

Yes written by Bowie John Lennon and Carlos Alomar. John also plays one of the guitar tracks
No written by just Bowie...Lennon was only on the guitar
Reminds me of Golden Years by Bowie in movie Knights Tale by the great late Heath Ledger.
Listen to Golden Years if you haven't already..

The music is a direct copy of James Brown's song Hot(I need to be loved). Only the words were changed...and some transition sections.
David Bowie released "Fame" in 1975...James Brown released "Hot" in 1976...
