This eucalyptus plantation has a very special place in the history of Corsica. It is part of a vast program launched at the instigation of Napoleon III and the General Council of Corsica in 1888. The objective is to clean up the marshy areas of the coast (malaria was ravaging) by sanding and eucalyptus plantations. This Australian species was chosen for its speed of growth in hostile environments and… because the scent it gives off is reputed to drive away mosquitoes (it was not until much later that it was demonstrated that eucalyptol actually plays a role in blocking the juvenile development of certain insect larvae). The 1st phase of the project targets 4 marshy areas on the West Coast, corresponding to each of the major Gulfs of the island: - The marshes of Porto - The marshes of Liamone (Gulf of Sagone) - The marshes of Campo dell’Oro (current airport) and Agosta (Gulf of Ajaccio) - The marshes of Porto Pollo (Gulf of Valinco).
The woman that lives across the street from me, has one, too big to fit through her side gate. I need to find some branches, about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. This wood moves A LOT, if you turn some wet wood, when it dries out, it will feel like an ear of corn. (I want to get some wet, to make a couple taphandles out of.) steve
I really enjoyed this episode!
Just to the west in the agricultural Imperial Valley, we have lots of large euclypt. San Diego has even more.
