- After Iran's failed attack on Israel last weekend, the pressure to schedule a vote in the House was too much and Speaker Johnson has finally agreed to allow a vote of some form of military aid to Ukraine. Unfortunately separating the aid bills will only further delay the process and Senate Republicans now have another chance to kill the aid bill for Ukraine and allow the aid bill for Israel to pass.

Jake, it occurs to me that the reason Iran 'telegraphed' their attack weeks in advance is because the last thing Iran wants is to go to war with Israel and, by extension, the USA. Therefore, to save face and look strong to its own people, it announced an attack hoping no one got Hurt.

Couple things. 1) There’s still a pretty strong consensus China is shady. 2) Australia’s basically got the US, Japan & South Korea. That’s about it. The combined navies of Europe are about a third the size of America’s as far as surface combatants go. The submarine situation is worse.
The Royal Navy has two carriers without fighters and can, in a pinch, muster about a half dozen frigates& destroyers (combined) & a couple of attack submarines.
It really wouldn’t hurt to learn Japanese & Korean…
Japan & the RoK DO punch any over their body weight, though.

How strange... Didn't Johnson say he couldn't pass aid to Ukraine while the southern border remained unresolved? He was very clear on this. Then he tried to pass a standalone on Israel only (without border) which failed. Now he suddenly forgets the southern border again. FFS
Johnson's PERSONAL reason for not wanting aid to Ukraine "until we secured the border" was actually because he wanted Biden to lift the LNG export ban because there's an LNG plant under construction in his state of Louisiana.

In Finland we have online system where if 50k people sign up a plea, it will be scheduled next to be voted in parliament.

French military production firms have suspended all external contacts and all that they produce is going straight to Ukraine. Macron says they need to move to war production similar to russia.

We can also recall that the Netherlands did not want to see Ukraine in the EU. But after the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Netherlands really feels this war as its own. They help Ukraine a lot.
Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is going after Jens Stoltenberg's job as the new NATO Secretary General. Recently he bought French support by giving them the contract to build 4 new submarines instead of to a Dutch shipyard and now he's handing out billions again to look tough. Meanwhile the Dutch defense budget has been for years one of NATO's lowest with currently still a very meager 1.65% of GDP.
The Dutch are fed up with this guy but if a new post as Secretary General of NATO is really in the best interest of the Dutch or any other NATO member is yet to be seen ... In all the years he's been Prime Minister there's just one thing he handled well and that was the Covid-19 crisis, otherwise he messed up big time!

I saw a posting of the proposed things in the bills, the funding they are willing to give Ukraine, makes pretend the conflict there is only 4 times as intense at most. Johnson absurdly wants to give Israel everything the Senate bill from 8 months ago was willing to give it, while cutting Ukraine's funding to a quarter of what was needed then.
I think Europe is better off forgetting about America as any kind of staunch ally. If DT gets elected, democracy there is sunk for 4 years. Somehow we have to find the aid alone, however hard that might be. Ukraine must not fall.

All of these measures will need to go back to the Senate. No doubt team maga will stall the Ukraine bill. Ukraine shouldn't expect any help from the US until 2025 and that is if Democrats win a majority. If maga wins, Ukraine will become a Russian oblast.

The congress ALWAYS controlled war funding. What has been expanded is POTUS power over time. If you look at WW2, US didn't enter until Congress finally agreed upon it after Pearl Harbor. Later many wars were entered by the POTUS and military complex before Congress voting, which led to many quagmires: Vietnam, unresolved Korea, Afganistan, Libya, Iraq, Syria, etc. For Ukraine, they may be doomed unless Putin gets overly cocky and attacks US directly.

My daughter wrote you a letter in December about military aid to Ukraine. We appreciate your prompt response, and thankful that you initially voted for this help in the previous year. You also understand the Budapest Memorandum, and the importance of the US external not just internal politics.
That being said, we are in the middle of April and the military aid to Ukraine is still not approved. In this period of time Ukraine lost not only more people but also withdrew from some settlements they held since 2014. Because of the lack of air defense missiles and systems, irreparable damage was done to the important energy infrastructure, which can not be repared by the beginning of the next winter. From this point on it is much more difficult to withhold Russia than it was at the beginning of last fall.
Because of the weak position of the US, Russia is much more emboldened and now talking about taking Kharkiv and even Suwalki Gap (NATO territory). There were no talks like this even last year. Iran and China are much more emboldened. Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel and China is planning to attack Taiwan.
I don't want to go into too much details of the politics, but it is clear to me what's going on. Speaker Johnson is totally controlled by Trump and the right wing of the Republican party MAGA, the likes of Marjory Tailor Green , who is a complete propagandist of Putin here in the states. And Trump is leading isolationist politics, helping Putin and hurting the US, not only on the international arena, but also economically. You are the one who knows better than the average American, that over 90% of "financial aid to Ukraine" is investments into American jobs and the military industrial complex of the US. Only the state of Iowa received if I am not mistaken $420 Million of the investments in the previous year. We give Ukraine old stuff we built in the 80s and 90s, that would cost us more to decommission. We then allocate funds to build better and more modern stuff for ourselves here in the United States. Well, so far for the ridiculous fraction of the US military budget and investments in its own military industrial complex the US considerably weakened one of its main adversaries with the hands of Ukrainian people without sending a single soldier. But Ukraine doesn't have an unlimited number of soldiers, and deaths are happening daily. While Mike Johnson releases Congress on 2 weeks paid vacation almost monthly to avoid putting into a vote military aid for Ukraine, and comes up with every excuse possible to delay it.
Not a single Republican Congressman who supports Ukraine, dares to sign the discharge petition. Only Ken Buck did that, who also resigned.
There are ways to sack Johnson from the seat, all it needs are the will and the guts of a few Republicans to do something right.
I'm very disappointed in the Republican party, and I will vote and do everything possible to make sure not a single politician who doesn't support immediate help to Ukraine to a complete victory will get elected into office.

After all four bills are voted on, Johnson plans to combine the bills that are passed into a single package for the Senate.
White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday that the Biden Administration does not support a stand-alone bill. “We don’t support a stand alone bill that only funds Israel because Ukraine needs munitions too,” Kirby said. About 1/3 Trillion dollars cumulative, all for a tiny country of 9.5 million. Put differently, the total amount is like giving every person currently in Israel about $31,500. Courtesy of US taxpayers. The new aid bill is on top of the current aid they receive every year.
