- Dal Master originale è stato possibile ricuperare questa aria con la qualità audio perfetta. Fu uno dei più grandI successi della Verrett, nel massimo momento della sua vocaltà . Cantano con lei Piero Cappuccilli, Nicolay Ghiaurov e Veriano Luchetti. Peccato che anche questa stupenda produzione con la regia di Strehler non si potrà mai vedere commercializzata per i noti motivi.
Ho lasciato la totalità degli applausi con le espressioni di estrema commozione che manifestò la Verrett alla fine dell'aria.

Verrett was one of the greats as evidenced by this fantastic excerpt. I wonder what she was thinking as the ovation clearly told her she had conquered the Scala, arguably the highest honor in the world of opera. Brava Verrett!

I wonder what she felt in those moments. She was in Italy, in Milan what a satisfaction could be to receive such applauses in that theatre and she was maybe the first black woman who had to break a wall. Thanks olaig100 , thanks Shirley Verret for this unequalled performance.
This performance is actually from 1975 at La Scala. It was one of Verrett's signature performances in one of her signature roles.

Leontyne Price took La Scala by storm 20 years earlier with Cio-Cio San and Aida. So she wasn't the first, but she was definitely one of the few and one of the absolute greatest!

I am glad you like it. I will try to post some more of this DVD. It is finally cleaned of the interference of the original RAI master. As you might know the did use at that time one ampex, priorly used te record a soccer game.

The tape was not duly demagnetised before the recording of Macbeth. This is one of the reason why the opera could not be put in to market. This happen also for Carlos Kleiber Scala Otello, and 1978 Forza del Destino with Carreras Caballe. I was able to find a very bad tape in New York at Tower Records more than 15 years ago. But impossible to use .

Sarei curioso di conoscere quei tre che hanno messo il pollice verso a un'esecuzione del genere.
Questo è l'applauso che avrebbe meritato la Callas quando nel 52 interpretò la stessa opera. Ma era una novità troppo grossa un'interpretazione così intensa e una vocalità così prorompente sempre al servizio dell'espressione.
La Verrett è bravissima, ma talvolta rompe la linea vocale, specialmente nelle agilità ed è interpretativamente legata. Forse ha paura di strafare. La Callas non aveva mai paura perché sul palco scendeva una musa a guidarla e lei non doveva far altro che abbandonarsi.

This is fantastic Olaig100. The DG recording is one of my favourite CD set and I never thought I'd find a video of an actual performance in this quality... Any chance you'd ever upload the other two arias, the duet "Regna il sonno..." and the Brindisi ;-) ?
