Dude, the cymbals sound better when you don't pound them. Digging into the ride a little sure. The china sounds bloody awful, but over all I dig this show. Probably sounds better where front of house has been mixed. Still, if you amplify bad cymbal hits (too hard), it will still sound bad, less loud. Mic the ride so the engineer can cut off the other cymbals when necessary. It could be the case, this drummer got stuck with cymbals that were not of his choice and what he uses sounds better when you hit it that hard. I don't have experience with every possible cymbal. Some are far more forgiving when you hit them hard. This particular set doesn't sound great from this vantage point and it isn't the phone microphone. I have cymbals I have to hit very lightly to sound good and others can take a medium whack. My china sounds best with a light hit. My china-hat sounds really good with a bash. My splash cymbals sound best with a slightly light hit. It depends on which cymbal as to what sounds the best with it. I think the hats and ride cymbals need mics so you aren't required to bash them. Some of my hats sound awful with a full strike. I have some I can bash on and it isn't bad but they sound better without the bash. I appreciate Sabastian as an artist. His band sounds tight. Love the energy. I have been mixing tracks and the cymbals were killing me. It's hard not to listen with mixing ears.

I saw the show here in Montreal on May 24th. The tickets were my 50th Birthday gift from my boyfriend. We enjoyed the show! I wish I would have had the chance to meet him cause I have been a huge fan for so many years! I was curious about that thing he kept doing with his hand shaking his fingers. Anyone know what that is about? And FYI, the drummer is his son! He said all the same things at the Montreal show. Love him!
