  • Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” Kaki King is a true iconoclast, a visionary musician/artist whose singular work rightly stands out amongst the easily formatted. Over her decade-long career, the Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer has recorded five extraordinarily diverse and distinctive LPs, performed with such icons as Foo Fighters, Dave Byrne, Timbaland, and The Mountain Goats, contributed to a variety of film and TV soundtracks and played to ever-growing audiences on countless world tours. See her story in this episode of Uncharted.

My favorite guitarist. From the first song I heard Kaki King play I was hooked. I look forward to finding more. I only wish I could play with such feeling.

I am southern Baptist. I love sound. I don't understand your lifestyle, but I respect your music. It opens minds. Why do so many I's line up on my screen?

Anything Kaki does just blows my mind. I've loved her and her nails since her first TEDTalk in the early '09's. To HEAR her blossom into what she has evolved into now is just beautifully mesmerizing. Thank you for being here 👍 and you're BEYOND cool 😆

A collaboration between her and Tosin Abasi would be off the scale. :O

my spirit guide, my mother through music, my friend, my inspiration. had kaki's music never found me, nor my mother before me, I believe a kinder part of us would have been stranded.

Technique. When I first heard of Kaki King I was like, oh another lame Hedges clone. That was me just seeing the technique and not paying attention. And this was waaaay before UA-cam. Before there were a million actual Hedges clones.
Then my friend took me to see her play live. I still don't care about her tapping, percussive stuff. Her music though. Her compositions. The stories she tells with her music. Holy shit. I think I actually saw a ship on rough waves during one of her pieces. Like... almost hallucinated it. I think she was painting a picture of what I saw. Sounds insane, but as a synesthesiac, recovering (hopefully, eventually) from a brain injury, who started pouring out tons of strange alien music that seems to have a similar, but broken, power of narrative and ability to paint a picture. My sonic drawing is abstract and awkward.
Kaki King paints like Vermeer, but with sound.

Kaki King is also known for the song Doing the Wrong Thing featured in the movie Into the Wild. Multiple cool live versions can be found on UA-cam.

Her wife got pregnant. What kind of upside down world are we living in? We've lost our way.

The real world Gomer... Hetero couples also rely on artificial insemination, but I assume that's not the "upside down" world you're referencing. This being evidence to you that WE've lost OUR way makes me glad I'm not a part of your WE. Wake the F**K up.
