I was one of the first students when the University of Newcastle was born. In our Electrical course, (1963) I remember attending a building that looked more like a church, and then we moved over to Merz Court. I saw Merz Court being built and still remember that great big gap in the ground where the foundations were laid on concrete stills buried under. It was Prime Minister Harold Wilson who inaugurated it and I even debated against him in that debating chamber on stilts which was at the University, I wonder if it is still there? I attended that debating chamber for almost eight years debating against Roger Bannister, Dame Irenie Ward, and Manny Shinwell, now there was a character in that man. The debate with Dame Irene Ward was ....... ... That Members of Parliament should clock in like Dockyard workers at Swan and Hunters. I remember comparing Dame Irene Ward to my mother who did not want to buy a washing machine because she thought that machines do not wash the cuffs and collars of shirts very efficiently.. In her summing up speech, after she stood up, she looked around the debating chamber and said, " Where is that young man who compared me with his mother?" and then she proceeded to say that she was so very honored to be compared to my mother who had brought up six children in WW2 when the situation was not very conducive to comfortable family life.. I still remember Professor Russel, Dr. AGJ Holt, Mr. Ritzon, Dr. Livingstone, Mr. Carter, Dr. Brown, Dr. Lennox ( mathematics) Mr. Mitchel was the Chief technician at the Electronic Department. I was the first student who used the electronics laboratory shown in the video, but it was not equipped as seen in this video. I did my higher degree with Dr. AGJ HOlt in a rook adjacent to that laboratory. There were Jack Sewell and Bob Lingard all working on active filters while I worked on switched filter design. Good old says going down to Southmoor down in mines where I saw pit ponies down in the mines. We flew past Airmstrang's factory, and up to the "Robin Adair", Just gannin' doon te the railway bridge, the 'bus wheel flew off there. The lasses lost their crinolines off, an' the veils that hide their faces, An' aw got two black eyes an' a broken nose in gan te Blaydon Races.
