Images of early 20th century Delhi during a Muslim festival.
"Delhi at the time of a great Muslim religious festival" is the helpful - to a point - context to this film offered by Pathe's catalogue of the time. Which festival, we're not told. Certainly the streets throng with people and floats, while a number of street performers are on hand to entertain (and presumably profit from) the faithful. From there, the camera moves on to the magnificent Jama Masjid mosque, where worshippers wash themselves in the courtyard's waters before assembling for prayers.
This was one of a great number of films made in exotic locations by the Pathe Freres company to showcase its often breathtakingly beautiful stencil-colour processing. Though the images here are mostly well-preserved, time hasn't been altogether kind to the colours of the BFI National Archive's copy, which aren't as radiant as they would once have been. But there's some real charm here nonetheless. The German intertitles in this copy testify to the huge international demand for such films.

Not likely. Considering life expectancy back in those days. That would mean that people would have to be 52 years old at least to even have been born. And you can add another 10 years to even remember anything.
my grandfather is now 90 and he still narrate me amazing stories of past😍😍
But this is 122 years ago, way before his birth
And what really happened is forgotten or hidden in ww2, many things happened that are secret from us

My great-grandfather was from Delhi, he lived in Chandi Chowk. He came to Pakistan in 1947
Most chadni chowks shops are owned by Sikhs now.
Delhi was a wonderful place to live till the 1970s.
Mass migration from rural areas and Lack of government control on illegal settlements have spoiled Delhi.

They are not washing with the same water. They take water from the pond, and wash their parts in the drain outside the pond. Also these ponds had the system of fresh water supply.

Many of the people in there 70's in the picture would have witnessed the revolt of 1857 and how the people were massacred by British officers not leaving any civilians as well...Almost more than half of the population of Delhi was to be massacred by British and half to run away before the capture on 17,18,19 September only to be looted and to rot by bandits on there way after leaving Delhi .. Dead bodies were left to rot upto bones and almost the smell were unbearable and what was people of Delhi fault?? Just they were trapped between the white officers who were thirsty to kill and take revenge on Indians and the sepoys who almost looted to ruins since its capture from 11th May 1857..
