  • I was asked to speak at a recent Coaching Psychology conference and, seeing as the event wasn't recorded, I wanted to share my presentation with a wider audience.
In this video, I explore the concept of psychological discomfort - all the thoughts, feeling and other internal 'stuff' we don't want to experience. I explain how I approach the topic as a coaching psychologist and outline the steps I go through with clients whose life at work has been somehow impacted by discomfort.
Using examples like public speaking and procrastination, I explain how uncomfortable thoughts and feelings can exert an unhelpful grip on our behaviour, leading us to avoid situations that, in reality, all that bad.
Please drop your comments and questions about this video below - and let me know if it's helped you better understand the concept and how to effectively deal with discomfort.
    Thanks for watching!

Hi Richard, thank you for sharing this, I was hoping to get a copy of your slides following the conference but this is even better! Watching it through it struck me, as a parent, how useful these concepts would be to build psychological flexibility/resilience in children - have you come across any good ACT resources aimed at children?

      Hi Laura,
Thanks so much for your feedback - it's much appreciated.
To answer your question, ACT is more and more being used in both mainstream child development contexts and therapeutic contexts.
I'm not trained in that area, but I hear very good things about Dr. Tamar Black's 'The ACT workbook for kids'. It's available on Amazon. Also, check out UA-cam - the ACT community is usually very generous in giving away excellent content on a range of topics.
