I think y'all just saved my carnivore journey. I started in March without any information other than "beef, butter, bacon, and eggs" and did great until July when, for a variety of reasons, I really fell off the wagon. I've been trying to climb back on and it's been so hard, and I started going down the macro rabbit hole trying to figure out what I was "supposed" to be eating. Major frustration ensued because, as y'all surmised in this video, there IS no official "everyone needs to do THIS." That search led me today to this video. Hearing the advice to just listen to your body, aim roughly for that 80/20 ratio as a starting point, and just flex as necessary is so liberating. I really appreciated the reminder that we don't always know what healing is going on, and my diet was a DISASTER before this so Lord knows I have a lot of healing to do! I also appreciated hearing how that phase of unending hunger could also be a sign of the body healing, because that's been an ongoing issue for me and I thought it meant I was doing something wrong, because I kept seeing advice to "eat until comfortably full" and thought I was broken somehow because I am NEVER full! Anyway, thank you again so much for your honesty and willingness to acknowledge that carnivore is a very personal, individualized journey and that listening to our own body is the best guide!

OMG - I cannot tell you how much this has helped me!! I'm 6 weeks into Carnivore after like 8 weeks on Keto and I've been really struggling. My mood has dropped, my weight loss has been plateaued for like 3-4 weeks and I just today added more fat, in heavy whipping cream. I found my stomach can't tolerate that but I LOVE the energy boost! FINALLY my mood is so much better. So my local grocery store already said they would hold back like 2-3 pounds of beef fat for me when they're doing their cuttings and they'll give it to me for FREE!! I've already been watching how to get that stuff rendered down. IT'S SOOO nice to hear you ladies talking about your different experience and trying what works for you. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

This is probably the most useful info for me. I like the suggestion to eat fat first at meals. I have experienced the increased protein cravings when eating a higher protein percentage. I wonder if we create too many carbs when overeating protein and those carbs are making us crave more protein. Higher fat helps me with sleep and regularity.Fat increases my thirst, which is good. I agree that just adding butter is not the best way. I think it’s better to add cooked trimmings or raw suet, if you can find that. And lots of water.❤️Thanks again for this info. I would encourage people to experiment with more fat but also listen to their bodies, as you said. There is some daily variation in what we need.

A big problem is that many people start carnivore for whatever reasons, are *desperate* for results. They want to know what works best, which is absolutely understandable. But, as you've noticed in your life is that there is no exact ratio that necessarily works best. Unfortunately for most people, it really does take time to figure out what works best for them at that point in time, and that could change at another point in time. It seems like there is a surge in popularity for carnivore, and you're going to get new people asking questions. Thank you for the video and info-drops!

Not feeling the fat today, but feeling it most days, today I was questioning my choices around fat. I am now giving myself permission to listen to my body and cut it back for a meal or two, and that's o.k. I think moving forward, I need to get some pork rinds and fat trimmings on hand to bump up my daily, when I'm not feeling to add too much of it to a meal like today. With so many zealots in this community, it's soooooo refreshing to hear the voice of reason. We do all have different genders, ages, hormones and health issues/ requirements and a one size fit ALL approach is just ludicrous. I really appreciate you Kelly and your approach in general. I started to eat only meat and eggs 1.5 years ago. It was winter, cold and I was eating beacon only almost. I gained lots of fat in two months which I still didn't lose all. Fat is very appetizer to me, it's like candy. I don't eat so much at one meal but it's like I feel hungry very fast after eating few slices of beacon. On the opposite, the leaner the meat I eat, the less appetite I have. For example I bought chicken breast for two weeks and I had to shovel it in my stomach. I did felt more happy the more fat I ate, I felt more balanced and strong when eating fat and protein like fat chicken with skin or beef or pork muscle. When eating only chicken breast I felt depressed and I had to add eggs which totally helped. The strongest and balanced I felt by eating beef, one step down and losing fat for me is eating lean chicken and boiled eggs

Now, I’m going to tweak it to eat more fats and less protein let’s see if that works. Can’t wait to find my own combination.

I understand this struggle myself, especially with being sensitive to different types of protein. I wonder if you used chicken as your source of protein, and then used ghee or tallow for fat - that way you lose the depressed feelings but you also lose some weight. Maybe worth a try for a couple weeks? Its definitely a balancing act. Also maybe eating liver could help the mental health issues.

My attempts at Zero Carb has been going on now since October of 2018... so I guess that would be 18 months now... some of the time I was more "Carnivish" than Carnivore... but really I have made a very earnest try... I would say at minimum 95% Carnivore... I am overweight and never lost a pound yet... I do have diarrhea most of the time though on meat, meat and more meat... I switch from ribeyes to mostly ground beef, some chicken, only a bit of seafoods and a bit of pork... I don't seem to do well on dairy, eggs, or bacon... I have insulin-resistance and I am old at 74... so I keep experimenting and eventually I will find the way to lose the excess weight... I might have to do a serious fast for a jump-start and then strict zero-carb after that... Thanks for everything...

This video really reflects the Inuit study that long ago told us the truth about sugar. Living on seal/whale blubber these folks thrived until western culture introduced the sweet tooth.
I love the carnivore community which allows us to experiment with the macros that drive our individual health. I understand there is out there the OCD version that is stricter but thankfully I’m not exposed.
    Kelly I am so grateful for your passion to bring all these carnivores to our attention who have struggled with so many health issues which were simply cured by diet change-tossing out tons of prescription drugs. Between you and Dr Ken Berry I have lost my sugar cravings (eat more fat!), my underwear began to fall off (I am not a slave to the scale, I don’t know my current weight) but thankfully I had previous weight undies to rescue me;
I can eat tons of my favorite luncheon meat, liverwurst (restricted for years by low fat dieting); my skin tags are dissolved, my joints no longer ache, my mood is elevated (politely eating a small piece of my son’s birthday cake made me depressed that night, definitely NOT worth it) and I am waiting for my annual blood work which will incorporate the correct tests for the first time ever in 66 years! Fasting glucose & insulin, C-peptide, and A1C plus I will have a CAC done.
Now to persuade my vegan grandchildren to take a look at these videos, all of whom are on psychotropic drugs because they want to save the baby whale and literally kill themselves.
So sad the propaganda in the media and the alarming lack of knowledge in medical and even mainstream nutrition community. If a study says NIH, CDC, ADA, etc approved I IGNORE IT.
God Bless both of you with His protection and provision as you demystify the Proper Human Diet.

I think the big problem with minced beef, besides the misconception about it's percentage FROM calories, is that when you make burger patties you cook all the fat away.
I've started making a bowl with cooked minced beef instead, with 50g. of butter added and maybe some oregano and cheese.
When cooked for patties, I think the ratio becomes way too close to 50/50 fat & protein. For me, when going from 500-800 carbs daily, I needed A LOT of fat, to make up for the missing energy from carbs - especially transitioning.
Unfortunately I did carnivore for a year, frying all the fat way.
The other thing is, which is a game changer for me, is adding smoked Mackeral. Even higher fat than salmon, and works GREAT as a launch or late night snack. It's also cheaper, and always wild caught. It's so fatty filled with fat-soluable vitamins. It's like rocket fuel for me.

Quit sugar/carbs. Eat lots of fat to get your body fat adapted and insulin sensitive. When adapted, cut down on fat and eat more lean. Let your body fat feed you. Use intermittent fasting and occasional longer term fasting and continue to loose weight until you get to your ideal weight. Feel wonderful and cut out vegetables that makes you feel lousy. Cut out any Keto foods you overeat on. Usually nuts, cream or cheese. My journey to a healthy life.

cool28990 yes I walk and sprint every night for at least 30 min. and I do taekwondo 2 times a week. I was doing high protein lower fat because it makes sense on the surface that this is how to loose body fat. I gained belly fat which I generally don’t gain. Also high fat gave me the runs. I bought some pills to help with digestion and have upped my fat and lowered my protein to no more than 8 ounces and I have lost 7 lbs in a week. Keto 101, which I completely forgot, teaches that red meat is highly insulin spiking and fat is virtually not. That is the reason, I believe anyway, that we need high fat to loose weight.

Two types of fuel carbohydrates and fats. No protein. I think that if you starve your body energy from either , then you over consume food cause body is craving energy from food source. If your body is fat adapted then you must give more fat less protein you won’t get overweight. And if your body is using glucose (carbohydrates) for energy then eat more protein less fat and you won’t get overweight

    • @myzerocarblife
      @myzerocarblife  4 роки тому

Springteen - Sounds like you have it all figured out without even watching the entire video. 😉 It may work exactly that way for you, but it doesn’t for everyone. Lots of very fat-adapted carnivores lose weight when they reduce their fat to protein ratios. Dana had eaten only meat for 6 years when she started gaining weight and had to reduce her fat intake in order to lose weight. It happens plenty.
However, just like amber, some people need high ratios of protein to fat in order to drop weight. She lost weight when she cut back on fat.
It’s just not as simple as a blanket statement or equation. Different people need different things.

Ok~ one MORE thing to simplify folks, per these fine humans speaking in this post~ because it's NOT a "one-size-fits-all" as far as weight loss/keto/carni & how you go about it, how about we try this fantastic idea; "What are you gonna start with"? And then she says, "You know, you might just start with- which one SOUNDS better to you"? Because it's true, it IS arbitrary- which is ok!
Wow~ I think so many of could benefit from hearing & grasping this, I know I sure did~ & could have way sooner into this, had I not been so heck bent on getting it just right, or following what somebody else had success with! Good grief, I spent an entire year with ZERO weight loss- in fact, I gained 10#, & kept stressing that I just was not 'doing it right'~ or good enough, etc.

Dana is really sharp. Starts at minute 34. When Dana, after 6 years at 80% fat, started gaining weight she cut back to 65% fat and lost weight fast. Yes, she cut fat - but that means she also cut calories. I'd guess she'd been a bit over her daily calorie budget. You likely want to eat enough fat up to your calorie budget but not over to stay slim and in ketosis. Dana's "It's just fuel now," is 100% exactly it. I had no trouble losing 75 lbs. on Keto, and felt terrific at 67 yrs. old. I prayed to Jesus to take away my decades long cigarette habit, and He did!!!! 😍🙏💕 That was two yrs. ago . I developed a sweet tooth, which I never had and gained 40 lbs. I still can't get this under control! 😭😭😭😞😞 I do OMAD and crunch on ice with liquid Stevia and lemon extract at night. That's where the problem is and I can't stop. I am not anemic and don't have Pica. I have a very dry mouth living in dry Las Vegas and I can't chew on sugar free mints all the time either. I got some peppermint extract, and put that in a small spray bottle, diluted with water and a tiny bit of stevia. Not even that works. I tried sipping on water, but I was floating from all the water and up all night peeing. I tried eating some tiny cooked bacon chips which was ok, but this sweet tooth thing has me really floored. My health is suffering and I can barely walk now, my joints hurt so much! I have no energy, always sleepy and depressed. Doctors are no help at all and I don't trust them. Do you think my body is getting all the toxins out? I would think after two years, drinking only water and eat plenty of good food, no carb-low carb, I would be able to stabilize and lose weight again. Hmmm....
I'm KetoVore now, mostly meat, eggs, butter, green beans every now and then. I can't get a handle on the fat to protein ratio. Some days I'll lose weight, get a "Whoosh", but then stall again. If I eat extra fat, I gain and get heartburn. Sheesh! 🙏🙏🙏
Does anybody have any other ideas for me? Please pray for this challenging situation.🙏🙏🙏📖📖📖😞

Keep in mind that when you go zero carb you may not be producing enough insulin to deal with the extra glucose. This is not ideal.

The fat-to-protein ratio is a thorny problem. I taught Arctic survival some years ago, and “mal de Caribou” or “rabbit starvation” is one of the potential problems when trying to survive on a very lean protein/meat diet with little or no carbohydrate. In fact, our on-base nutrition was a high fat/high protein diet and featured a very high-fat post-dinner meal which was probably over 80% fat. I routinely lost excess body fat and gained a significant amount of muscle despite high levels of physical activity and exposure to temperatures that went to 40 below and occasionally lower. It’s why pemmican is such a great travel food in an adverse situation. I’d point to the Inuit ancestral diet.......
I’m with Amber on the higher-fat regimen. I feel “right” with higher fat in my diet.

I was high fat for the first 10 months and only now going into month 11 am I starting to intentionally eat leaner (leaner beefs, fish, etc.) as I did not lose any weight the first 10 month. But I also believe my body needed that time to heal too. Did you keep this up and how is it going now?

WOW, this explained so much for me. I too lost 60lbs with fasting carnivore and was easily maintaining that loss until I had pretty major surgery. Not only was I gaining weight (about 15lbs in 5 months) I was craving surgar (I've been low carb for 20 years) and couldn't fast past 24 hours. At the 24 hour mark, I'd get so incredibly nauseated there was no way I could continue fasting. I stepped back, doubled down on carnivore, eating intuitively, and TRIED to "trust the process," sometimes more successfully than others. LOL ! At about the 5-month mark I started to be able to fast again, and am trying to now re-lose those pounds. Understanding the immune-insulin connection is huge, as fasting was near impossible as long as my insulin was elevated from my body healing! Thanks, Amber for the insight, and thanks to Kelly for your dedication to posting accessible content to your platform.

According to Dr Chaffe and others fasting can mess with your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight when you're not fasting. Also, you have to be careful that you're not losing muscle tissue. I watched a personal trainer who used a body scanner on one of his clients, said she lost 7lbs fasting, but 6 were muscle tissue, not fat.

This is insanely helpful. Thank you both for addressing this issue!!!!!! I did so much research around fat/protein ratio (youtube, raddit, google). I didn't do well nor did I feel well on 'eat as much as I want' and 'eat when hungry' even when I ate fatty meats. I knew that my electrolytes were good so it must be "NOT ENOUGH fat". So I started experimenting prior to watching this video. Yesterday, I ate cooked beef suet first till the point I couldn't eat any more and then I started to eat my steak.... What a difference! Also, sometimes you think it is electrolytes issue but it could be a fat issue. I had so much energy yesterday after lifting the fat. I weighed myself this morning and the scale actually went down. FYI, I started this diet 2 weeks ago.....Also eating fats attached to meat is better than eating liquid fats. You might get a lot of diarrhea (explosive) if you just start this diet and you add a lot of lard (liquid fat) to whatever meat you are eating. Don't worry about calories. My opinion, this is hormonal. I also read about The Bear (there is a PDF online). He started his diet with 80%/20%. (2:1 in grams), and he dropped to 60% to 40%. Audience, Do Not be Afraid to eat a lot of fat!

People are not used to eating more fat than they're used to. We automatically think we should trim off the fat and that can be the entire problem. If you want clear skin (like Steak and Butter Girl) it's the fat. She eats butter by the stick. Dry skin means eat more fat.

If I eat a grass fed steak with a little butter, I’m satisfied.
Two nights ago, I ate a big price of salmon & prawns.
With an hour I was very hungry.
I didn’t have anything quick to eat, my partner went out and bought ice cream & chocolate.

Ketosis should be easy and enough fat should be easy.
50 to 100 grams of protein per day is enough, and will not be too much (active types need more). More protein than that and your weight loss may stall and you may fall out of ketosis as the excess protein turns into glucose as when you were eating carbs all day long.
Enough fat is easy, just eat more. Use Chronometer (free)but know that the macro numbers currently are wrong for ground beef, so double-check that. Fat grams should always be more than protein grams and not reversed.
The optimal Paleomedicia gram weight ratio is 1 g of Protein weight (not meat weight) to 2 g Fat or by meat weight, 100 grams of meat to 35 grams of fat, or 3:1 by weight.
Or just buy 73%/27% ground beef which has your 100 meat/35 fat ratio with no added fat needed. Easy. Get 73/27 for cheap at your local supermarket from Signature Farms.
If you're still not losing weight or not in ketosis, that can only mean you're eating too many calories, which is hard if you get enough fat. Enough fat is the key plus keeping calories under what you burn. These ratios are correct for everyone because they are based on long-term clinical experience with a few thousand people and confirmed by fine-tuned molecular testing - not iffy intuition. Start there and carefully deviate to adjust. If your experiment does not work out, go back to the 100 g meat:35 g fat ratio that seems to cure everyone of everything regardless of their background.
80% fat and 20% meat by Calories matches the 100 grams meat to 35 grams fat by weight as well as the 1:2 ratio of protein to fat. Ketosis and losing fat and curing leaky gut and avoiding doctors depend on 2 things - enough fat and fewer calories. Simple. No need for grass-fed or organic. By the way, constipation on this diet is a sign of not enough fat.

This is such a great video. I’m in my 4th month of carnivore and haven’t lost any weight. Although I know my body is thriving on carnivore, it does bother me that I am not getting skinny lol. I keep tweaking and experimenting with my fat and protein and other variables. For the last week I’ve been telling myself I just need to stop thinking so much about and let my body learn to do what it needs to do. This was a super great reinforcement of that need. As always Kelly, you are the best and I appreciate you!!!
