Nice soldering station if it has worked for 19 years! The digital readout is great and the way it updates so smoothly with turning the knob

This soldering station kinda reminds me to the one I used during my apprenticeship as an electronics technician. I also used a soldering station made by Weller, but where I live (Germany) we have 230V as the mains voltage and it didn't have any temperature control potentiometer. The soldering iron holder looks exactly like the same I used though. I'm glad that I found a roll of lead based solder on a flea market a couple of years ago.
Sometimes a few drops of contact cleaner will fix the main problem. Good work!

I used a similar Weller unit at work years ago. It was very basic though, no heat adjustment. I also still use lead solder. I have an almost full 1lb roll of Kester 60/40 that should last me forever since I don't solder much anymore.

I have an older version EC-2001 , I bought from a factory sale when the place closed. I still use it today. It just works day in and day out and no telling how many factory hours it had on it before I got it. I have an extra heating element and suspect I'll keep thing until I can't solder anymore. I'm with you on the lead free vs lead type solder. 👍

A quick glance at Weller's product line shows a pretty decent spread of units across the price spectrum, whereas Hakko only offers a couple options - none of them analog.

Awesome dude! My soldering iron is probably the cheapest one that radio shack sold about 10 years ago. I unfortunately can't solder worth a damn and I'm sure the iron doesn't help, but it has helped me fix a few things over the years.

Nice work! I was using a RadioShack digitally controlled soldering station at work for a few years, but it just never seemed to work right, and tips were impossible to find - that's when I sprang for a Hakko FX-888D - and I'm VERY happy with that thing. I was so happy with it, I bought one for my radio repair business and despite being left on for a few days at a time, it still performs like it did when new. Never owned a Weller, but I once worked for a division of Amphenol that used them in their assembly department.

Hello Spats! I used to use a soldering station close to this at my old work, and it's was great, the only problem it had was the four-pin had a bad contact inside but was easy to fix, I'll pair it with a hot air station for smd components. At home, I use a 40W soldering iron with a dimmer to adjust it's power and works great too, but it demands a bit more practice to use. About lead-free solder, yeah, I always need to flow leaded solder to the junction just to be able to melt it as I wouldn't crank the heat up to do so (tried already on some scrap boards, it tends to look pretty bad and also damages the PCB).

I have an older WCC100 which is similar in functionality to the analog WES51 except it runs on 120v instead of 24v. I've found that the tip makes all the difference between happy soldering and "unspeakable words" soldering.

I have a clock radio with a dirty/noisy volume pot - can i just spray some contact cleaner with the knob removed or does it need major surgery?

Hey Spats, I've been a long time subscriber since the beginning... Do you accept radio repairs from subs? lol... but I have a Sanyo M9994K that needs full service...
