1936 was a good time in cinema building when architects know how to build cinemas worthy of their name. True art deco styling at its very best . Gaumont knew how to make them feel like cinemas too unlike today's cinema business which is all about money and not what customers want ..

    Another beautiful and lost building
I remember the whole of the Boys High School (1,000+) from Hardenhuish Lane site to Timber Street for the school Christmas Treat of watching 'The Train' (B/W 1964). The school took the whole cinema over. Also watching Live and Let Die (1973) on its first run (and staying in to watch it a second time). The cig machine on the outside wall where - as kids, you could buy 10 embassy without worry to take inside. Being thrown out for chucking wine gums over the balcony into the stalls and seeing Monty Python and the Holy Grail for the first time (the soundtrack LP always reminds me of the ambiance).
Later it became Goldiggers night club (all I recall is Cameo - Word Up at ear bleeding volume). Then flats in which my mother in law spent some of her last years.

The building was demolished in January 2005 and replace by shops and apartments. The 3 friezes, depicting the Spirit of Cinema, with her attendants of Sound and Light, were incorporated into the facade of the new building.
