    The balanced XLR and the balanced TRS connectors are not the same. The XLR connection is coupled through a transformer and is lower impedance than the TRS. The XLR is a MIC level input and the TRS is a LINE level input. The both go to the same input stage but they are not electrically the same. A LINE level signal will overdrive a MIC level input.

    XLR is typically used for MIC level inputs. TRS is Line level. Two different animals. The preamp is looking for specific different levels coming into these two inputs.

    TRS may very well be balanced, however the XLR is usually considered better not only for the signal derogation factors but also because in a consumer level mixing console the MIC preamp's are generally much better and the 1/4 inch TRS lines are commonly overlooked. With a Mackie I think that I would trust the 1/4 inch preamp's though...

    Hi Jim. What is the purpose of the echo knobs on the mixer? I have a mixer it has input for mic. guitar and sound etc... beside the gain knobs. they have echo (delay, repeat hi,low, mid). and music knob on the model. It make me really confused. In fact I don't have much knowledge on the sound system. Please teach me how.Thank you.

    I've been in bands (pub rock mostly) for many years. I've rarely had the chance to run the PA as it's usually been someone else's gear. Just wondering: is unity gain on the meter (i.e. green) the best level, or is the first yellow, or the top of the yellow the best level? I suppose you want headroom, so top yellow is pushing it. My previous drummer used to go for the first yellow light as a general guide.

    Great video. I am a guitarist and have never had to worry about mixers before, but will be getting one soon to assist with solo work. Cleared up a lot of basic questions. I do have one question though. On a mixer with effects. Are you limited to only one effect for all the channels if there is only onboard effects and one effect knob. In other words I couldn’t ass reverb to vocals and chorus to the guitar?

    • @WorldAccordingToJim

      Some boards have one effect, some have more. The effects can be assigned to specific channels, also you can add external effects using the insert on the channel.

    I have one question??? on our board at church we have the option to use sub-channels just like on this board you used to demonstrate with... but it has a third button other then 1-2 and 3-4 but below that is L-R.. what happens if you turn that on also??? like i understand the reasoning for wanting to have maybe all of the drums in a sub-mix because you can can change everything with one fader.. but what does L-R do??

    • @kneejerkreactionuk
      @kneejerkreactionuk 8 років тому

      Pressing the L-R button in will send the signal straight to the main outputs, bypassing the subgroups. Some people prefer it that way.
