Transiting the Cape Cod Canal is something that many New England sailors hold as an eventual "someday" thing when they first get started sailing. Sometimes the weather outside the Cape can be dicey. The Cape Cod Canal is an engineering marvel many years in the making, if you count all the preliminary surveys and even an earlier iteration of it many years ago.
It's an exciting place, meaning that the current rips through, and the time to transit either north or south is dependent upon the tide. Boats without engines can't transit the canal. Thank you so very much to Paul Jackman for coming out to follow us down the canal on his bike! Check out his work here: / jackmanworks
We can't thank the town of Bristol and TotalBoat enough for the mooring, services, and welcome we had while we were there. Cheers to you all! See ya in Newburyport!

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I took a new job in March of 2016. I was away from my family for 1 year 9 months and 3 days (but who’s counting) I found this channel and watched the lead pour by accident one day. I was hooked. Never being interested in sailing, my curiosity got the best of me. My wife would ask me if I was still building a boat and when would it be finished almost once a week for 7 years now. She, like me, couldn’t understand my interest in it. Im not sure I still do yet but here I am still enthralled.
Thank you for the dedication to the videos of your journey. I can’t put into words how I feel like ‘we built a boat’. It kept me sane a few times, while missing my family tremendously.
I got to tell my wife ‘we’ sailed for the first time today.
Thank you to everyone who was/is involved in this absolutely amazing endeavor. You are all amazing.
One of my favorite moments of sailing is when the sails are up and the engine shuts off. All of the sudden you have that rumble sound disappear and the sound of lapping water hit the hull as the wind takes full control moving the boat! The burdens of the modern world workings disappear and I enjoy that moment of zen. Happy sails!
Happy Friday, Kevin!
Yep, we all struggle keeping things in proper perspective. Your video documentary exhibits years of focused hard work in creating and now to reset the mind for adventuring is not as simple as it sounds. Great job reflecting on that Steve and congrats to the entire crew!
Cheers!
Wondered when "the wall" might catch up with you, Steve...you, however, have acknowledged it and are taking steps to recover and refocus !! SMART MAN!! Your journeys have just begun and they WILL BE GLORIOUS!! Best to you, Robin and all the crew--including the beautiful furry one...⛵⛵⛵🤩🤩🤩
When it comes to health,, MENTAL health is essential!
Steve, you have now officially built a sailboat ... launched a sailboat ... motored a sailboat ... and sailed a sailboat! Congratulations to you Sir, and the whole crew. KP, so happy you are doing better.
How wonderful!!! All of it, every darned bit of it.
Steve, thank you for sharing where you are at. So many times, we don't want to admit that we are just worn out. It sounds like you and Robin need to take a few days and find a rock to climb!
He also has a very seriously ill mother and I know from personal experience even being fully grown what an awful emotional toll that takes on a young man. Stacked in with EVERYTHING else he's dealing with (good and bad).
Thanks for your kind words.
She's a beautiful boat, something for you and your crew to be proud of.
I have built a house and hired subs to do some of the tasks. The pressure of trying to meet a deadline made me grumpy at times. Building a boat is hundreds of time harder and trying to meet a deadline while worrying about loved ones has to to take a tole. I’m sure your crew recognizes that. Take care of yourselves and take some extended time off.
Beautiful boat!!!!
I've built a large home by myself and a boat similar to Steve's. The home was more stressful by far.
Really great job guys. You should be proud of your homemade boat... been watching from the beginning.
Cheers for being on the journey with us!
I sort of saw that coming, Steve. Very understandable you hit a wall after so many years working hard on Arabella. As they say: one hand for the ship, one hand for yourself. Please recover, but in your own time. And thanks for the honesty. Fair winds to you all, from Amsterdam, NL.
@maruiacancerc One day, one step, at a time. Never give up, Never surrender, and don’t let the bastards wear you down. #FuckCancer
She's really beautiful on the water. I wish you decades of happiness and safe sailing❤
We love you Steve! The entire crew are the best ever. You all have given the world a beautiful boat….now go relax with her!
I love you all. Thank you, Steve, for a magnificent, inspiring, olympian quest. Looking forward to the next chapter of wonderful human beings afloat!
Chapter 1. The building of Arabella is finished
Chapter 2. The adventures of Arabella, is being made now
This channel gets better and better
There are no words that can speak of your accomplishments! Arabella is a beautiful lady! May God smile upon you.
@@bartymurns maturity is realizing how many things don't require your opinion.
I am surprised you never crashed before, I think I have been watching you for 7 years or so and ever bit I saw was uphill. You made the deadline, it's able to sail, take some sweet quiet time and relax until your better. See you soon.
Simply amazing! All the best!
Nice to see her look so great under sail. Relax and unwind, you have been under a lot of pressure . Thank you again.
Hey Steve and crew, I’m marking this down, my video journey today has taken me to the Cape cod Canal. It’s my first trip. Thanks for taking me along.
Hooray! That’s what we love to hear, Jim. Thanks for coming along with us!
I have been cruising on my own boat for the past week first time in 10 years with my two dogs for the first time. Steve and crew you have been doing soooo much, I cant imagine hiw exhausted you must have been and hiw hard that "wall" must have felt. As you are now learning sailing and sailing vessels, particularly traditional ones, cant be rushed. In that slowness there are lessons. Arabella will teach you things, protect you and nurture you as you have her. Take your time, continue to recover.
Proud of you man. Been watching since the keel pour. Sorry I didn't watch from the very beginning. Really cool to see people follow their dreams.
This channel has for sure become the Akiva travel channel
And I’m here for it
What you have done Steve is beyond measure. What you must do is now relax and enjoy what you and the rest of you have created and relax. There is always tomorrow so long as it does not effect safety. To get Arabella actually sailing is a massive achievement I am so jealous and wish I was there with you. Thank you for bringing your journey to us long may it continue.
To be fair, I didn't really notice the tension. I mean, I've been sailing a lot when tired and / or stressed out, so I guess someone being a bit tense or stressed out on a boat is just business as usual :D You did great, and I hope you got the time to relax and decompress! This is a marvelous thing you've built there!
Steve you have built a beautiful boat. That is an amazing accomplishment. You deserve some down time to help you appreciate all that you have done and to prepare for all the adventures that lay ahead.
I think it may take a lot longer than you expect to learn how to relax again, it's not just like riding a bike. But you have created your own enviroment that is generaly seen as one of the best ways to decompress so I am confident you will find a new grove that works.
been watching since the keel pour, bought some merch, always sent best wishes. To see Steve and Robin and the crew finally get her under sail is nothing short of inspiring, thank you all for sharing this amazing achievement. You are clearly on the right path with the right people. Fair winds and following seas.
Your drive, personality and motivation is evident in what you have created. I'm not talking about Arabella, I'm talking about the wonderful relationships you've forged along the journey.
Arabella is a wonderous work of art you've put everything into.
You should be proud of both creations, but you also need to recover after putting so much of yourself into everything. All artists know about this.
Take a break. Reflect. Unwind and be proud.
The next step will be harder.
Breath … your up to the challenge. Trust in your mates. Walk before you run . Great video. Many years in the making 🎉
Whew! Sailing! Glad that part is finally accomplished. We all hit walls. At least you know what the big deal is… it… isn’t. You get the sails up and everything is flapping around and the anticipation of your imagination runs, and then… boom. Your moving along. It wasn’t as climactic as you thought. You’re just holding onto a tiller for hours after that. That’s a pretty small boat for so much crew. We wondered where everyone was sleeping! Enjoy the space and freedom of some peace and quiet. You deserve it. ✌️❤️
I discovered your project 6 months ago on UA-cam and have been catching up (binge watching) ever since. Congratulations to Steve and crew on an amazingly fine build and interesting videos. As a former sailmaker two things jumped out to me while watching this latest episode that are hopefully on your list. Sail covers and chafe protection. The main is chafing pretty heavily on the aft shroud as you’ve probably noticed. The two biggest killers of sails are UV and chafe. Good luck with your ongoing commissioning and future cruises. You have all certainly earned a much needed relaxing vacation.
We just haven’t had the sail covers made yet. Thanks for watching! Glad you’re here!
Hope to see you in St. John's, Newfoundland in you northerly travels. Arabella looks just beautiful
It was very noticeable how pissed off Steve looked in the last couple of videos, good call to add the note on the end explaining why. Kick back, take it easy for a week or so.
Totally understandable. I'm amazed you kept it together this long!
HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!! Great to see her on the water.
Happy Friday, Aynsley!
Awesome .... a little left wing and rushed at the end ...it floats !!!
Amen Steve, take care. You've climbed the peak and written a compelling story. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
Love it! Happy Friday, 'bella fam! ♥️☕
Happy Friday!
Appreciate the views and observations. Enjoy your time off Steve. You've earned it!
Always a pleasure to see the finished project sailing. And darn good too. R&R for Steve and the gang.
Much love to you Steve. I am so very proud of your accomplishments.
Congratulations! I've been watching progress for years and very happy for you!
I got a bit nervous when you guys were jumping in the ocean. I was born in Rhode Island and spent some time with my older brother sailing about. I can't tell you how many times we had great whites following us around. The closer you get to Martha's Vineyard, the more we saw around us. They seem to collect there in the summer. Kept me in the boat.
Some video views from a drone and companion boat showing Arabella’s lines sailing would be appreciated!
JIM ❤
Steve you have achieved so much and worked yourself really hard. When you first set the launch date I thought it was very ambitious but you did it, an amazing achievement in itself. Now you have a whole new set of challenges ahead especially if you haven't sailed before. You have a lot to learn and also have to learn how to live with the boat if you are going to do some serious sailing. All this could be adding to stress levels. If I were you I would check yourself and Robin into a nice hotel for a couple of weeks and let someone else look after the boat. You can then come back refreshed and ready to face the next set of challenges in your maritime life.
Take some time out, get away from the boat a bit, go look at some sites, have a few good meals out, sip on a couple of good wines, and in general slow down and smell the coffee, to enjoy your future sailing adventures well, you have to be, you have us all for the long haul
She sails freaking awesomely!
The boat looks great sailing along in the sun. Been watching since the setup to pour the lead keel.
Hope you all get a good break and recharge.
Steve. You reached the finish line. You beat the other boat yt channel. Rest and recoup all you need. turn the cameras off, do what you gotta do. Just please, i beg you, turn the cameras back on when you're ready for voyage. I am invested now, not economically yet, but emotionally. Its been a crazy journey just getting to the water. I'm stoked to see the journeys you'll have in the liquid.
Sailing isn't always smooth, but you have a fine Crew and an evener finer ship. God bless you, your friends, and Akeva.
Very well done Steve and Co .
I think it’s great the way you and your crew are getting along and looking out for each other. While learning together just what Arabella is capable of. It is the beginning of a truly great adventure! I do find myself missing the flurry of activity of preparing Arabella on the final days before launch. I hope that you make a video including more of the final boat work before splash day.
We hope to as well. 👍
Congrats Steve and team! Long time coming brother
Just wonderful to hear nothing but the wind and the slapping wake after so many years. It's a great moment. A couple if things. I'd like to see thise anchors made off properly. They could take charge in heavy weather, and are in any event causing wear. And I wouldn't dare to cook at sea without fiddles on the stove. You can't rely on the gimballs to keep the cook safe. The ship looks well down on her marks forward. Is there any weight or ballast that could be re--positioned? You need full buoyancy in the bow.
Decompressing? Interesting word to use. I call that, relaxing. I ease the stress i have had with finishing up what needs to be done, then relax.. I decompress when i am diving, but hey words are great. There will be issues to debug as the trip unfolds. Best of luck on the sail.
Congratulations on enjoying the fruit of your hard labor!
So happy for y'all👊
Gotta say the boat looked enormous in the build
Now, not so much😊
Hope you had a nice dinner together. And steve, hang in there! You got a whole life ahead of you on that boat. No need to rush
So much of your stress is taking your fans along on your journey. Thanks, but take care of yourself first.
Making the dream come true. Excellent. Cheers.
I think that the emotion and mindset that you are feeling is because you spent so much of your life over the past years building the boat and identifying as a builder and now it is winding down. Who are you and what are you going to do now that you are not building the boat? It will take a while to relax and move into the new life. Enjoy, you are allowed to relax now and move onto new adventures. Goodbye boat builder, hello adventurer!
Here for a long time, not a hard time. Take care of yourself and get some rest, I am feeling the same way myself recently. Hope your rest is well taken, its certainly well deserved.
thank you
Now is when your new life begins, enjoy it as long as it lasts. I wish you calm seas and safe harbors as long as you sail!
10:40 YoYo line fishing is a lot of fun. I like setting up YoYo lines with a spoon if I see schooling Blues or Dolphin fish as well as when trolling for Strippers. Additionally YoYo lines can be used with a downrigger
Take your time dude and enjoy the beautiful boat !
Great progress everyone!
Did not expect to see Xyla Foxlin on the east coast!
Beautiful film, beautiful boat. Be safe, and take care.
Great Job!!! Great Boat!!! Great Crew!!! THANKS!!!
Thank you Ben, great editing work!
Beautiful scenes, like the foot tied to the rudder. Cool. great photography, Steve talking great too.
Happy Friday, Sonya!
Rest up team, you've earned it! And if you need to take some time off making videos to do that, then personnally I think you should. Theres been so much pressure over the last months and you need to take care of yourselves. You've built a beauty there, well done!
Totally agree Steve. It has been a long hard slog to get here and the last few months have been very stressful in so many ways. Take some time out - there is no deadline apart from one that YOU set, so take care of yourself for a bit. We can all wait a few weeks for the next video if that is what you need. Akiva has really settled in to his role as the ship's dog, hasn't he - loving every minute; and Arabella appears to be performing exactly as you would want. Have fun.
What you have done is amazing , on the experience side , can you secure your anchor better , when you end up pounding into waves , that isn't secure and a lot of pressure will be put on it ,
It really starts to look like a boat now...😁
It's super-bizarre, but watching this video, I feel so proud of you, Steve. And the rest of the crew. (It's bizarre because I'm just some random dude in South Africa, feeling proud when I have no actual stake. But there it is.)
Thanks so much for sharing this amazing journey. Wondrous stuff!
What a nice and gentle Dog
Akiva is soooo sweet and such a lil doofus. 😊 -Anne
So cool to see you running!
Nice to see her sailing😁
Time to live the dream, buddy. You deserve it.
Feeling tired is a sign that you got there where you wanted after so many years, nothing wrong with it. Relax some time and you will fully enjoy!
Hear hear! -Anne
you guys are doing the route of my first sail but in reverse! i came from maine to mystic seaport my first time ever sailing.
i wish you safer travels than i had. good luck brotha
The line fish with tissue and vacuum is a creative idea, I'll put that in my tool box.
Sweet! Glad that was useful!
I don't know about you at the helm, Steve but NO FEAR of hights. Love your crew they'll get ya through!😊
Well done all. Atkins would be proud.
The wall will hit you , ,,, when it dose , just remember you have built yourself a beautiful home with all of the time and hard work 🎉🎉
Well done getting through the canal! Tidal flow and winds can make it tough. Let us know when you might hit PTown. We would love to see her on cape somewhere. Come to Oysterfest in Wellfleet in October!
"you should sell that. You should sell that. "
*Definition of this channel
Well, not surprised by the last soliloquy by Steve. I always thought the deadline he set last year for this June was overly ambitious - by an order of magnitude. The rush to get things done over the last three months was mind boggling to me. I understand the reasoning behind it but, at some point, there has to be a mental and physical dump. And here we are.
You already survived the hardest part, time to sit back and just pace life like normal.
So lovely to see Arabella out there, in the water, doing what she was designed to do, and doing it so well. And Steve, you put your everything into her and I understand that a shakeout cruise is not in itself actually so relaxing. You'll get to know each other in a whole new way now, and most sailors would agree that it is indeed a relationship that grows deep. I believe I've watched every episode since pouring the keel and you have taught me so much. Thank you all! I'm agog for the next episode 🙂.
Cheers!
Remarkable how quickly the elements attack the boat.
Boat maintenance is simply fighting entropy. -Anne
Great job Steve you have earned a rest and sailing is the best wat to recharge.
I've been watching this channel for years. I tell everyone about it, I love it so much. I got chills seeing Arabella under sail for the first time. What a fuckin accomplishment you guys.
And Steve, your feelings are valid I'm sure you're not the only one of you guys burned totally tf out after this final push.
Y'all do what you gotta do and keep the good stuff coming when you can, everyone will still be here. ✌️
What you called a friction hitch I've always called a Prusik knot. Cheers from Northern California!!!
Tighten up the staysail stay......
Nice one Steve Robin ariva and the crew Steve and Robin you are about to live your dreams and with ariva enjoy the openess of the ocean I wish you calm seas and fair winds
Sailing - hooray!
Victron Orion DC-DC charger will sort out your issues with the charging system from the motor. I use one in my overlander. You can even parallel them up if 30A isn't enough.
Have watched and enjoyed since day 1. It’s going to rain all day 8/7 in Newburyport so won’t be at open house. Any idea when/where the next one will be?
