  • In this video I share my thoughts regarding the last story chapters of the #guildwars2 End of Dragon's expansion, What Lies Within. Does it give players a satisfying ending to a decade of narrative build up?
    Lets find out.

Honestly, they could've included this with the initial release of Gyala Delve. I don't know what to call this story chapter but it felt like nothing on it's own. I did like the characters and the idea they went for with the mind-fucky elements. But splitting this extremely limited short story in two was a mistake. I don't know what to expect from GW2 in the future, but this kind of "short" content has so far been a let down for me. As of right now I am 100% feeling the old living world format more. Season 4 was some of the best gameplay and story we've had in the game's history. I feel like they're trying to re-invent the wheel once more, and I am not convinced by any of it at this moment. Yea the expansion is coming but even that is going to be spliced up into smaller bits. And considering how little content End of Dragons had with those half empty maps and a semi-rushed story, I really worry about the game's future once more. But guess we'll see, and I hope i'm wrong here, truly.

Its a valid critique. These two were smaller than Id hoped for. But like you, Im waiting to see what we get with the next expansions. Honestly, I like the tone and direction of these stories. I just hope we getting larger serving in the future.

I love guild wars 2 i really do but i cannot defend how abysmal the writing has become recently and they just seem to ne taking some weird cringey route also the date and the end was just no needed and wasnt a fan at all. This was literally a cliche anime story with tje power of friendship we can do this! Which is just boring.
    The meta was also dreadful.
I am worried for the future of the game but all i can hope for is they put all their eggs in the expansion basket and this was just something made by a tiny team to fill the gap but id argue id of prefered nothing to what we actually got.

Spoilers in my Conclusion what i thought about this short Update. Don't read if you didn't played it yet.
Do be honest. It felt cringy most of the time. That talk about "being positive" the whole time. In the end at the restaurant i thought the demon shows up every second to tell us we are still in a projection to keep us THINKING we're doing the right thing. But instead he still feeds on our emotions silently while we delve in all that "fake positivity" to keep us in a state of stagnation...
But nope, it was real. It felt so out of place.
Nothing against positivity but how it was done here felt just so wrong in terms of immersion.
It felt rushed. Like "Damn we need something... let's tell our players that staying positive in their lives, give them kind words.".
If so, nice idea... sure. But sheesh... i say it will miss that message because it feels "not in character". It felt like a decision to tell a message somehow and bend all the characters to a degree to fit said message from the Devs.
The fights were... meh. In my case i stood the most time around, listened to stuff the Team said. Conveyor belt story and fights/mechanics.
The flirting of my commander with Ayumi (i chose her) in the end... what? Was it sarkasm that they flirted like 16 years old on their really first date in live? It felt... awkward. And in the end... "Yah thanks bye bye.".
And did i missed something? When did my Commander "fell in love" with her in the first place to get that kind of flirty? My eyes where like: O_O What?
It wasn't good... in my opinion.
If that is the start of a new Era in GW2... i HOPE they just had a hicup.
Playing this game for over 10 years now, defending story decisions against guildmates who harshly criticized Anet in the past... but now i tend to join that criticism slowly.
Anet has to keep going and deliver, otherwise GW2 will dive down a again from the success of EoD to the state before end of this year and next year if they keep doing such stuff.
They need pushing. The Addon was really good. Don't relax on the laurels now Anet or it will you bite into the rear.

I'm sorry you did not enjoy the episode. I liked the positivity. I chose Canach as my dinner guest, I did not take is chatter as flirting, but its Canach...
I found this lighter new beginning refreshing but I can see why it fell flat for you.
I hope the expansion this summer is more to your liking.

@@FornaxTheHerald Yah, Canach as joice makes way more sense with that weird flirting attitude, yes. It fits more his character. The others though are kinda out of context, because "we" only know them for such a short amount of time. It just felt not right to me.
It seems they chose mostly the same lines for everyone of them instead of making them more individual fitting.

I would treat this as more of a breather episode. It is one where we reflected upon all the losses we have suffered before and all the friends, comrades and allies that are now gone because of the Elder Dragons' devastation. I actually expected this towards the end of End of Dragons expansion and not in episodic content as I wondered why there was no scene where we reminisced about Marshal Trahearne and all those who sacrifice themselves for the cause. It would have made sense to me if we had repeated Trahearne's words from the end of base game at the end of EoD. "Dragons are not stars in the sky. We've finally won Marshal. The dragon cycle is no more."
My critique is that Cinder wasn't someone I would have personally felt connected to and I would much rather have it been Ryland as he was our opposing counterpart, a fellow dragon champion, who we, Rytlock and Crecia gave every chance to come back to the fold but yet still refused and died because of that choice he made. I can understand how our Commander may have felt about Cinder's death though. Also Chul-Moo is not someone I would have expected to be there for a charr, someone he knows nothing about and a war he knew nothing about until that moment. I would much rather have Rytlock be there. This curious choice made things a bit disconnected for me as Ryland and Rytlock would have made so much more sense than Cinder and Chul-Moo, since Rytlock has been a steadfast ally and guildmate of ours since the base game. I get that voice actor availability may have limited them to using Chul-Moo's VA, but it was a very strange pick in terms of who we thought about during this chapter.

This is Anet's one and only intervention of a therapy session involving the commander. Under the guise of bait yes, but it feels good that the mental trauma is recognized, because even though we play as the main character of the world, they can only be strong for so long. As they never really had time in the story to mourn or say what needed to be said, because soon after another impending danger was around the corner. (With the exception of Eir's funeral, except the commander held the guilt with them the entire time as shown in the story.)

I dont know. As usual the approach was great but i personally have never felt guilt for what all has happened because all the dragons attacked first and so if they didnt die, there would have been far more devastation.
If these dragons didnt attack first and it was us who prompted them to attack, then yes i wouldnfully believe the guilt angle.

    • @FornaxTheHerald
      @FornaxTheHerald  Рік тому +1

It's not about guilt, its about grief. It's about the trauma of a decade of losses, and the consequences of being the tip of the spear.

I agree that I think we are going into a Sherlock style epoch with GW2. I think the main antagonist of the next expansion is E. The laughter from the teaser is E.
