Thank you mr Clayton for this initiative on sharing bass tips. Hugs from a big fan from Sao Paulo, Brazil, I will be in the Clayton Brother's concert next week (BMW Jazz Festival, June 9th).
I usually use an electronic tuner, or a pitch pipe when tuning my double bass. Last night I tuned my Oud by ear. The Oud has 6 courses of double strings, with the low note or BAM note sometimes having only one string. As you can imagine it took me a long time to tune it, especially since we had some very cold sub freezing nights and the ebony tuning keys contracted and slipped in their peg holes. Only 2 strings were still at proper pitch out of 11. Also the tuning keys are difficult to move and this results in difficulty in tuning. The nut and neck only make it even more difficult to tune. My Oud is a good enough but still a budget priced $450 instrument, purchased 14 years ago. I believe a more expensive Oud would have the tuning pegs better fitted into the peg holes. I actually have a violin peg reamer and the size is very close so I could use it to good effect on my Oud. Next the nut needs to be cut a little better. Mine has the nut grabbing the strings, I hope over time the groves in the nut will wear in and allow the strings to move more freely. Right now, sometimes as I rotate a tuning key, nothing happens, then all of a sudden the string slips in the nut and the pitch changes too much. Perhaps I should ream the peg holes and just re-cut the nut myself. My violins all tune easily - Peter

@PeterDad60 does a electronic tuner on a double upright bass works well? Do you put on the fingerboard or the bridge??
OK here we go.. one video a day.. and a Thumbs Up to indicate my progress.. and my appreciation!
Is that Ray Brown's bass?
