    Another good vlog Jon, very informative. Actually showing the mechanics behind something and how’s it’s done is so much better than just talking about it, well done. Will practice this in due course, after checking tyre pressures of course! Also loved the colour coordination with your jacket and the building’s windows, very polished performance!😁👌🏻

    Another helpful video Jon... can I just add, air pressure isn't the be all and end all saviour of rims. The dent is more pronounced with too low pressure, the dent will be local and very obvious immediately... especially if you approach the curb from an angle... it will dent the rim more on the first side that encounters the curb. However, if you have 'enough/more' tyre pressure and you hit the curb hard enough and are late with unweighting the wheel... the dent can not be obvious, but can out of round the rim over a greater area and not be noticeable to the eye.
    Personally, I use a very similar method to you, however, I don't wait for the bump of the tyre and curb meeting, I like to crouch a little more than normal and unweight the wheel just before the bump, so as the tyre strikes the gutter, my weight is just coming off the foot plates and the wheel 'follows my lifting feet'. As you say with your method, timing is everything... pop too early and the damage will likely be worse than expected if the wheel is landing when it was supposed to be taking off..
    Another method I use, especially on higher curbs is to run at the curb head on, slow down to an almost stop as you get to the curb lean forward and unweight the wheel so rather than the tyre slamming into the curb, it literally stops then drives up it. The experts (who generally make us mere mortals sick) just approach the curb at warp factor 9 and jump, lifting the wheel from about 3' before the curb... DoH!! haha

      Experts tends to use jump pads and that makes it easier to bring the wheel along when jumping.

  • @olcamo1

    This video is quite informative and well done 👏.
    I do find it easier to use jump pads.
    As you approach a kerb you sort of crouch to put pressure on the tire and then jump using the rebound force of it.
    If done properly you have much smaller chance to bend the rim.
    Makes jumping kerbs easy and power pads do give more control of the wheel.
    This is in my experience, what is your thought on it?

    Very helpful. I can get up a curb no problem at low speed, but the thing we see on UA-cam, is these guys jumping up over them. I assume it's cuz they have power pads and jump pads, cuz I cannot get my wheel to jump at all. I don't have any extra pad accessories. Maybe a revisit to curb hopping with jump pads is in order, cuz it seems everyone on the forums and groups is using them? Unless you've already done it, lol idk I've only been watching these types of videos for two months now, so you might have already covered it several times. Maybe call it a part 2 and link it to this video if you haven't.
    I've seen Ian do it without jump/power pads but he's been riding for a very long time now, and is kind of on a different level then us old fattys that are watching these kind of videos. Lol

  • @monowheeling
    @monowheeling 2 роки тому

    The kicker is that one doesn't need to jump. Lifting the heels(!) and keeping the knees flexible is enough. This also makes the timing a little less critical.

    • @BunnyslippersEUC
      @BunnyslippersEUC 2 роки тому

      Depends on the height of the kerb. In the Netherlands the kerbs are very height. So jumping is always needed, so you to not be surprised by that one kerb. The kerbs in this Video are very low.

    • @monowheeling
      @monowheeling 2 роки тому

      @@BunnyslippersEUC As long as you don't pull the wheel up from the ground, which was not my understand of the technique shown in the vid, jumping won't change much in the addressable height. On my wheel, the height limitation to clear kerbs without jumping comes from the shell touching the kerb. I have been riding in Holland a few times and my memory is that I could clear many kerbs by just driving them up with a 16" wheel.

    • @lashley370z
      @lashley370z 2 роки тому

      Sorry, brother, but I think your technique is going to end up with a lot of bent rims. Even with his unloading the wheel, the V12 is on the verge of bent rim or a pinch flat. It's far safer to use jump pads and just hop onto the curb without contacting it at all. Maybe this is harder with Monster Pro or a beast wheel, but there's no reason the smaller wheels can't do it.

    • @monowheeling
      @monowheeling 2 роки тому

      @@lashley370z over the years I have passed maybe a thousand 4" curbs like this (without jumping) and have yet to see a bent rim or pinch flat. I crashed the wheel a bunch of times in the training process (without substantial damage). I don't have a V12 though, so it could be that its rim is not durable enough for this technique.

    Does Inmotion manufacture poor quality products ? I bought a V8F 4 months ago. I rode it normally and even didn't jump kerbs. Then one day after pulling it down a kerb for a while, it shook strongly and the wheel was locked. This happened again next time and it said PLEASE REPAIR. I checked with the app and it displayed "mechanical failure". Why is it so easily malfunctioned ?

    • @wheellifejon

      I have broken two axles on the V8 (right side of the axle where the cables pass to the motor) and stopped going down kerbs on a regular basis for this reason (I am still going up kerbs but don't jump up). Broken axles (or pedals) are by no means unique to InMotion wheels though. Sad but true.

I try as much I can not facing n crash my wheel against as showed in this video, one time ya ended loosing the time n damaged your ring!

      You have to time it right so that you take the weight off the wheel at point of contact. Make sure there is plenty of air in the tyre too.

    • @wheellifejon
      @wheellifejon  Рік тому

      Yeah. It should be the same. Make sure you have pleanty of pressure in your tires and lift up exactly as you make contact with the kerb edge. Dont just plough into it! The other technique for smaller wheels is to grip the wheel firmly between your feet, push down and compress the tire with your weight before you get to the kerb edge then bounce up holding the wheel between your feet.

    Interesting. I learned kerb hopping from Ian's videos on it back on the Ninebot. That technique was to load up the tyre IN ADVANCE of the kerb and squeeze with your legs, then hop manually rather than using the kerb to launch you, landing on top. That seems safer because you never hit the lower surface area kerb face (or corner) which has more potential to hit the rim. What are your thoughts on that?
    As I only ride an 18" wheel at the moment, I suspect either way would work in practice but I'm used to giving it that "squeeze and release" with the tyre giving me a little launch.

    • @wheellifejon
      @wheellifejon  2 роки тому +3

      What does Ian know? Yes, I agree, hopping up before making contact might seem safer but with big heavy wheels there is a risk of coming off the footplates and being out of control of the wheel, which feels very risky. If you have enough air in the tyres, time it right, you lift your weight off the wheel as it makes contact and the risk to the wheel is very limited. Do it with an under inflated tyre and you will wreck it. I know. That's how I wrecked a Sherman!
      You get another mention on the Podcast Tim. Out now on the usual places!

    Curb or kerb?
    There are some important things you didn't talk about.
    - adjust your speed (slow down) while approaching a kerb. Give yourself time to estimate the situation.
    - approach a kerb straight on. Never at an extreme angle.
    - Some kerbs are higher. So if you ride different wheels. And you forgot you are riding a 16inch at the moment. You might need to jump a bit.
