My grandmother is from Japan and we used to sing this whenever it rained when I was very little. I’m starting to get back into learning Japanese and this song is definitely ingrained in my memory
Me too!! This is exactly why I came on here. I hope to be fluent before I die. My grandma and mom learned English as there second language and I feel I owe it to them and to honor them by learning Japanese fluently. I only took 2 years of it in high school and that was over 10 years ago lol
I grew up singing this with my mom and grandma! Both from and born in Japan. My grandma lived and survived the war in Japan and had scars from shrapnel falling on her. She was born in 1932 in Tokyo and my mom 1954. They taught me so much about Japanese customs and traditions. I wish I was even more Japanese than I am. I miss them dearly and am so proud to be Japanese! Thank you for sharing this. It is so dark and rainy in WA State where I live and this song and my mom and grandma popped in my head this morning to remind me to sing about it.
Spent years in Japan. Tachi, Grant Heights, Kanto Mura, Misawa, and finally Yokota. After Japan, Okinawa. Thanks for the memory, I used to love the ame, harusame was my favorite season, and the rain. Even though I used to hang terubozo.
