Tip: make another Photoshop doc in the high resolution and the grid. Import the first doc into the second one as a smart object layer and scale it up to fit the grid. Then tile those two docs next to each other. Now you can work in the pixel perfect really resolution and every time you save it you will see how it look with the grid on top without needed to alter the code doc. You can also add the yellow color in the other doc. And add a bit of layer blur (as the pixels are not perfectly sharp. Or even better is to add slight blur and make a 10% transparent copy of the pixels on top of itself with a bit more blur or glow to make the slight bleed in the LCD simulated
@@BJGpixel haha yes for sure. I have cried many tears that it won’t work. Heck like in Photoshop if I set up two screens. Pull up a big window on the top screen. And have a smaller windows with UI on my 16 inch drawing screen. Of course one would love / expect that what I draw is seen on both. But no it’s only when I stop the drawing loft pen release mouse button. THEN it’s updated in the big screen ok not a dealbreaker but I would be so nice to have the detail view zoomed in on the 16 with fine detailed and higher res screen. And draw there using the pen for better control. But many times o also want to paint more loose and then it would be much better to just paint on the small screen whole looking at tre big full image screen. I mean that is what one want for me. I prefer a big screen just to look at and control by painting on classic non screen tablets. And then if I want to have finer control I want to zoom in on the tablet that how also act as screen where hand eye coordination works perfect. Do some sharp ink lines or whatever and without zoom out see how it looks on the big one. Actually I am pretty sure that when I used Wacom on Photoshop 2.5 / 3 back in 1995 it updated both / all window instances at the same time. Maybe they removed it to improve performance but I find it silly. If you add another window instance of the same doc it’s to be able to see it on different levels and if course you want respond. Ok ok maybe moving layers or transform I can get. But not to be able to see the brush strokes live sucks. And yes I have filed this a request for the last 20yeara or so tobAdove…
Between the Nokia era and smartphones there was great deal of phones fads such as colorful, transparency, gaming and qwerty keyboards. Even Motorola had a second wind as a leader in that age.
according to definition, you can argue that those colorful phones were actual first smartphones - you could install external applications on them, because they all supported java J2ME. And that's enough to call a phone a smartphone.
That's such a fun concept for an art jam, I loved the mock-up with the 3d model as well 🤩 Great submission; I think the buildings in that battle screen shot adds a really nice sense of perspective. And the boot screen just feels so tangible! 🤳
Thanks! 😁 Yeah I loved working with this concept - quite a refreshing format to explore, and the dot matrix also lends a neat look that would be fun to play with some more ◼️
My first phone was actually a Samsung phone. It had a stick fighting game that was like rock paper scissors. You actually played against other people, which I thought was just amazing at the time. A few years later, I got a kyocera, and it had a dungeon crawler game on it called Cavern Crawl. It's insane how much technology has improved since then.
That title screen is so outrageously good. I mean it all is, as always. But I love when your videos offer an opportunity to showcase how talented of a typographical designer you are.
I recently participated in an unrelated, yet similar jam about making a game for the Nokia 3310, which I then continued working on for almost two months, on and off. I had to do quite a lot of 1-bit pixel art for that game, and there's a lot of tricky decisions you have to make when you've only got 84x48 pixels to work with. Animating a turning cogwheel with a size of 8x8 and only two colors is not easy!
Hey Brandon, the CPU in the Nokia 3310 is the same as the one in the Game Boy Advance. Not sure if you care, but the ARM chip started its mobile device domination in the late 90s.
Imagine if this was your first Monster Taming game that you made, which now that I think about it, you should use that idea of yours and turn it into an actual Monster Taming game as well! 💡😃
I remember playing snake and games like that for hours in the restaurant wih my mom's phone while the rest of my family were talking about boring adult stuff
Brandon youve got to be my all time favorite pixel artist, I really am astounded at how much readabiliry you can oull out of so few tiny squares. And youve taught me so much about oixel art and how ti approach graphics in general, I really cant thank you enough. Do you mind if I ask, do you do this professionally or is it just a hobby you enjoy?
Your video motivated me to try this for myself and come up with an image to submit. I enjoyed every step and it was very fun! Thanks for posting this! o/
The case disintegrated because we used and kept stuff for a long time unlike today- where we buy a new outfit and wear it once and bin it after keeping it in the closet for a few years. Having replaced it many times already.
I was like... one of two kids in class that didn't have a nokia, but I had one thing they didn't: A ringtone editor. I also didn't have friends, but that's beside the point
Hi, I just stumbled across your videos and i really want to get in to pixel art but i can only do the very basics on adobe AI and Photoshop. I wondered if you have any tutorials or if you can recomend any on how i set my artboard and settings up so i can start :) Thanks for the great content i have subscribed :)
Why "Photoshop 2022"? I just assumed that once they went the subscription path that everything would be automatically the current version. Personally I'm still on CS6 (because it is pre subscription) and running it on Windows XP (cause its still my fav Windows) run on a VirtualBox (cause Adobe doesn't like Linux/open-source). 😁
The phone featured on the thumbnail is a Nokia 3410 and not a 3310. Also the image on the home screen that you drew on has two Navi-key labels instead of one so it must be a 6110 or some other Nokia phone that has an 84×48 mono screen and two Navi-keys
Nokia phones were too expensive for me. I got my first cell phone in 1998 and it was by Sony Ericsson (or actually my mom bought it for me, when i left to study in another city). Though everyone else in school seemed to have Nokias. I guess i was the only poor kid.
You wrote Nokia 3410, but you're showing a Nokia 3310 at first, even in the list of phones that "are the same" you don't show the Nokia 3410. Couldn't help but notice as a 90s kid.

Ooh that's an awesome workflow tip, thanks! Would be nice to work on the pixel-perfect version and have it update in real time like that :D

@@nillawaifu thanks! Good with a bit of positive stuff on UA-cam comments :D
The Nokia-inspired pixel art really brings back memories on playing _Snake,_ _Bounce,_ and _Space Impact._
oh my god the wave of nostalgia when you described the nokia case with the plastic screen and terrible leather.... wow that brought me back
Between the Nokia era and smartphones there was great deal of phones fads such as colorful, transparency, gaming and qwerty keyboards. Even Motorola had a second wind as a leader in that age.
Motorola are another one of those companies with the what if's you can play out.
according to definition, you can argue that those colorful phones were actual first smartphones - you could install external applications on them, because they all supported java J2ME. And that's enough to call a phone a smartphone.
@@jarlfenrir they probably are smartphones by definition, I don't remember people calling them that at the time though.
Who knew you could make something so cool, so small.
For me the Nokia aesthetic is encapsulated in the startup image with hands. I just find the way they compressed it very nice for some reason.
That's such a fun concept for an art jam, I loved the mock-up with the 3d model as well 🤩

Omg I forgot about those plastic cases!!! What a blast of nostalgia
Idk my BFF Jill!!!
When you say starter phone, it makes me think about a starter Pokémon themed off of a phone
We could honestly see this as a Dreamcast VMU artwork competition as well :) that screen was also 96 x 64px.
The starter screen with the big nokia text and the little icons is sooo aesthetic haha, amazing work! 😄
You can use "ATK" as the abbreviation of Attack

honestly amazing work. I wish this had been a game.
I'm so happy that I've found your channel. This is awesome!
Something I like about the art style of the nokia phone is the colors. It's similar to the gameboy colors and I quite like tht color pallate.
Ah the memories... Looks awesome!
Memories of playing Bantumi on my bathroom breaks haha
Needs that LCD blur/afterimage to sell it 100%
God damn dude, your art is glorious
great job capturing the nostalgia! love the little kaiju design
Loved the choice of background music for this video. Amazing art!!
So inspiring and original again. Well done
This is an amazing video and I love the idea of the jam!

You're not alone
This is such a cool idea!
I freaking love youre work so much! You always inspire and motivate me too get too it and make more pixel art.
This is so cuteee!! Makes me want to make something similar to this ✨
Can we have a 'CRT Time' compilation please? That would be sweeeet!
Ooh! Super cool. I think I may take part in this jam!
My first mobile phone was an Alcatel OneTouch easy db.
Nice job on the piece!
Now that's nostalgic.
great video, as always. keep it up!
Cant wait to see where this goes!
Can you please continue the series of making consoles as chariters 🙏

Tamagachi with battles is basically Digimon lol

I'd like it if we could go back to a bit more simplicity like this
cool!

I would totally use this on a real Nokia
what is music during CRT time sampling from? It sounds so familiar but I can't place it

For the logo screen, instead of scrapped N, letter A should fit much better, as pet name is Noki
