  • This was my first attempt with this duplicator in this video so I was going a little slow. As I got more familiar with the process I found it was much quicker to just plunge in to the desired depth every few inches then remove the areas in between. Got it down to about 30 minutes.

    I like your design. I've seen some idiots out there jam their routers into uneven stock and exponentially increase the shear-off factor of their bit. You did it nice and slow and I was glad to see you rounded the piece first before jumping into it. Cheers, and glad d it worked out for you

      +Sig Guy thanks for the comments. Yes I was worried about shearing the bit off and more important not having the sheared off piece of hard steel lodged deep inside my forehead.

    Made a similar design. Made a template to guide my router for the bat style, but i like your design at the rear Well done. Hope to turn quite a few bats

Saludos!!

    Looks like a good design, not sure I have the need to duplicate a bat or anything else for that matter though.

    Do you think this device can be used to build a pool cue? A pool cue shaft has a diameter of two centimeters on one side and one centimeter at the end. The length of a short is almost 70 centimeters. The problem is that the wood is thin and so may deflect under a lateral load.

      I think for a pool cue you would need to add a steady rest. see here ua-cam.com/video/D8cUcAZwhdM/v-deo.html

    I wonder if using a four flute end mill cutter would work better than the standard router bit. Dunno

      Maybe. I used what I had but thanks for the suggestion.

    That's a great jig and it does a fine job of duplicating a shape. I wonder if a round nosed bit would be best once you're getting close to finishing. Just a thought.

      Maybe, I never tried any other type of bit and I no longer have the lathe. Good suggestion for someone else to try. cheers.

    Nice work. What router bit did you use ? What speed did you have the lathe set for ?

    • @derekgale
      @derekgale  3 роки тому

      Hi Doug, I used a 3/8 straight cutting bit and medium speed.

    Do you have the plans for this duplicator?

    • @derekgale
      @derekgale  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry no plans. I just made it up from stuff around the shop. The rollers were out of an old patio door slider panel and the track was some aluminum 1x1 corner stock and the slider part was drawer slide laid flat.

    How about show us all how to make a copy template from start to finish please.
    This would help me as I have a copy wood lathe.

      the template is just another bat. It could be any bat off the rack or one that you have made. It doesn't have to be a bat it could be a spindle or a template but I have only ever used a bat.
