1971 Boston Whaler Restoration part 4. Today we are beefing up the keel and side rail with polyester resin to fill in the severe crazing in the gel coat
Great video! I don’t have nearly as much work on my whaler project, but this is very helpful for this fiberglass neophyte. I’m looking forward to episode #5.
im getting ready to start priming (maybe tomorrow) . the humidity and heat have been so bad and this epoxy primer is pretty sensitive.we are finally feeling a change in the weather so lets keep our fingers crossed.
OFF subject - just saw your vid about Wild Orchids in Florida - in Hurrican Andrew a two or three generation Orchid developer called Jones and Scully ( two brothers and a friend ) had their lifelong work and seeds blown all over the everglades - they had just relocated from where all the rental car companies are currently located east of Miami International airport to west of Krome just south of Kendal -- I was their telephone man before the move and saw everything they were developing.. there is no telling how far away the birds and wildlife have carried their seeds. - I have never seen anything like them before or since -
thats crazy . i read somewhere that orchids were at one time everywhere naturally in florida. then harvesters collected them to sell to people up north and decimated the natural population and the never really recovered.
Love this project. I just started on my 11 ft whaler restoration. Why not use Epoxy Resin on chines to fill the cracks & crazing?? Is the working time better with the Sun Cure or did you have another reason for using the vinyl-ester resin? Thanks and the whaler is looking great.
a few reasons i use sun cure. i build surfboards and this is what i use. im very familliar with the product. it is a polyester resin and gel coat is polyester based . also fiberglass boats use polyester resins during manufacturing.so i know it is chemicaly compatable. sun cure is amazing because the work time is determined by you. pull it into the sun and it cures. i also use it for all my fiberglass patch work (holes in the boat). cons: it cures with a tacky surface so it needs a curing agent to produce a thin coat on surface to inhibit air on the final coat (styreene wax adititive or pva) they do sell sanding resin that has additive already added. also it is VOC heavy it stinks and you need a voc resperator.

I'm waiting for warmer days to do exactly the same to a 14' Livingston. This has eased my mind a ton. Great job, and thanks for the help.
awesome

How come you only put pva on the second coat of resin?
the first coat stays tacky to make a chemical bond with the next coat the pva makes it fully cure so you can sand it smooth
@@StoneBrokeAdventure great thank you so much. Amazing videos!
