I have both of these and IMO the 9019 is a significant step up in build quality for Jinhao, but I agree that it's not specifically an upgrade of the X159. It's a new pen altogether (I believe based on the Namiki Emperor). I prefer the X159 for comfort; my hands just aren't big enough to be comfortable with the 9019, but the new converter is just gorgeous. I got the demonstrator version specifically to show it off.

almost. it's really based on the Namiki Yukari Royalle measurements (Except the 45 gram weight of its metal body). The Emperor is bigger still, longer and an even bigger girth. I have a feeling it's not a very comfortable pen for most, though I never had a chance to try one yet.

I have both models. I would agree that the nib on the X159 is smoother than the 9019. I have swapped nibs between the two and the 9019 works better. I have to think it is the luck of the draw.
I have sealed the barrel on the X159 at the ring next to the end cap with a little glue and I use it as an eyedropper. It works very well and holds a lot of ink - over 3ml. I also added a ring onto the section and applied silicone grease to the threads. Some would say I shouldn't do it as the threads are metal and may corrode but given the low price of the pen, it was certainly worth the experiment.
As to which I prefer, I like both. I find the wider section of the 9019 is not uncomfortable and have used it for long writing sessions. The X159 has a nice width, also. So, I am keeping both.
I also have another 9019 with a medium nib and it works very well and is very smooth.

I have some 9019s coming in the post, so I'll find out for myself in a day or two. My x159s have been inconsistent as-delivered, but so far I've always managed to tune the writing experience to my satisfaction. I find the size, weight and balance of the x159 pleasant to use, though the cap threads are a reminder that this is a budget pen. We'll see how I get on with the 9019's dimensions, the big converter certainly looks appealing.

Interesting you should say that about the X159. Doodlebud said it the X159 fit and finish just wasn't quite there. Like you, I have some 9019s on the way, I'm curious as to how these pens can be manufactured so cheap, yet maintain a reasonable level of quality. The large No.8 nib is a preferred nib for modifying to make it flex, an interesting aspect of the fountain pen hobby.

I got the 9019 as a clear demonstrator and I really like it, especially the large screw in converter. I also like my X159 but it hasn't had a lot of love since I got the Dadao. I have a fine nib on the X159 and got the medium for the 9019 and like that too. I might swap the nibs around and see how I like it that way. Jinhao seem to be stepping up their game in both pens and nibs because when I bought the X159 the only options I could get easily were F and EF. I've also got some spare medium nibs and might try grinding one as an italic. People do point to the Namiki Emperor when you mention the 9019, but the Emperor is a A$12K lacquered pen that I can in no way afford (well I could, but would feel silly doing it). I really appreciate what Jinhao have done with both of these pens and the nibs.

9019 is too thick for my liking. I don’t really care for a larger, as I prefer to swap inks more regularly.

    X159 wins for me.
