Trained as a theoretical physicist, Ernest Moniz focused his early research in nuclear, energy, and particle physics. But after serving as undersecretary of the Department of Energy and as associate director for science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, DC, Professor Moniz’s research interests shifted toward energy policy. He was appointed US Secretary of Energy in May 2013.
