Tbh, the anime was a pretty massive let down as oppose to the Dante we've come to know and love from Devil may cry's 1,3, and 4. (we don't talk about 2 and DMC) but to answer your question (with a bit of spoiler involved) Dante is not the protagonist. This is simply a fight that came to be due to a misunderstanding and a lack of communication between Dante and the second protagonist of the 4th installment Nero. The priest you see being murdered by Dante is nothing more than a power hungry man out to resurrect the god they worship (which is actually a demon). I'll leave it at that and hope it's enough to answer your question.
i'm with enma kozato on that because the anime is good and all but they could have done more on it and we really don't talk about the secon devil may cry game and dmc because those are really bad games so don't play them......i'm saving your soul ushiro no-dachi okay and also devil may cry 1,3 and 4 are really fun and badass games so if you want to play a game that let you use you skills to the max then devil may cry 1.3 and 4 is the games for you Ushiro no-dachi
