I was stationed in San Clemente island. Best duty station if you’re in the navy and love fishing. Caught a HUGE White Sea bass off the rocks .. sheep head, bass, leopard sharks, bat rays, it’s really a good place to fish
It really is! It a Airfield and the SEALS third phase training facility is on that island. Small Bar, gym, its a nice spot. On weekends we would bring the boats out and drop anchor then fish all day. Miss that place foreal!
Biggest L-cod (28 pnds) I landed in Ca waters was a hitchhiker on a 2pnd redeye..... My days of fishing these type of waters are past...……...thank you for reminding/taking it to a whole new level.
I think that flatfish was a Dab, you can tell because you can see right through its belly. One must of escaped the shores of the south east of England! Teeming with them round here. Thanks for another great video! Keep em coming!
Seriously mate, these videos are better than any TV show. Great adventures. Summer weather is finally here in Australia. Time to get the yak and the rods out ! Cheers.
+Getting Bent With Bo good to know! I can’t ever tell the difference between those and baby halibut, so I’m always scared to illegally use something for bait haha
California has great fishing opportunities . everywhere you turn there's fish ,all types,. .California rocks .great fishing videos Robert fields like always.
Your Videography is pretty nice.I have also been towed back to shore by my friend when I filled my kayak hull full of water due to a hatch fail. Live and learn. One time I handled a baby squid and it took a bite out of my hand.
www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Fish-ID/Sportfish/Flatfishes ^that's a good reference... according to them, eyes on right side of the body for halibut, left for dabs... still looks like a sole to me based on the dorsal but I really don't know...
Great filmography/editing work, and NatGeo level stuff in my book, and always anticipate the next episode(s). The waterborne concierge you're getting with bait, beer, and food deliveries is top-notch service. :)
+Greg Jackson thanks for the compliment Greg. I don’t have all the fancy cameras or a camera crew, but I’m doin my best! And yeah dude, top notch service for sure. I got spoiled out there!
A little tip for you guys is to use a jig head instead of a dropper loop you can keep the bait where ever you want and have a little mor control over the bait
couldn't wait for your next upload, I know it takes time to get the material and edit, but damn, always wish it was faster haha, good stuff, and keep em' coming!
+Daulton Valleskey hahah yeah man the editing takes like 2-3 days at least, so weekly episodes are about as fast as I can crank em out. I’ll be doing more VLOGs in between in 2018 though
Great day, great camera/edit work. That in itself is a full time job. I need to take a closer look at adobe to edit my drone videos. iMovie makes my head hurt and DJI software 😕. Put 5 fish so far in my yak, tons to learn but only putting maybe 8 hours on the ocean I’m pretty pumped. Keep the videos coming 👍. You’re living the dream.
Thanks man! I use Premiere. It’s got a steeper learning curve than some of the simpler programs, but it can literally do anything you’d ever want to do.
As always wonderful video and amazing editing keep the up the amazing work also what whould be a affordable GoPro with good quality and any recommend mikes for a GoPro
+Bentrod yakker we popped their bladders and let them go. If they didn’t go down quick we scooped em up and kept them. I don’t have a descending unit, but I’ll invest in one before I go back out there. I’ve never fished that deep before
Popping their bladders is killing them. You have to have a descender or kill your limit and go home. I hope other naive but good intentioned fisherman out there are reading the comments and not just following your lead.
Robert Field using a descender is the only way. Thank you for investing in one. Popping the bladder does damage to the fish and the survival rate is poor. We need to enjoy our fishing and care for its future. Thanks again and keep the vids coming.
I'm in Oregon, we are required by law to have a descender rigged and ready on all-depth halibut fisheries. Yellow Eye are a common by-catch and are protected, as they probably are where Robert fished here. They would be a pain to use in the extremely limited space of a kayak, but if you are going to fish deep enough to blow the fish bladder out of their mouth I think you owe it to the fish and resource. Its not a problem in a 24" boat with a couple dozen rocket launchers. By the way they really are not much of an investment except in planning and space.
bill smith I'm in Oregon Tillamook county and fish the pacific for 33years and counting. I fish 50% out of a kayak. It is very easy to use a descender, there are different types. . myodfw.com/articles/rockfish-recompression. We as educated fisherman are doing are best to pass the word on. I think Robert means to get a descender. We are always learning and improving our skills and preserving our fishing future. You can pick them up free at ODFW.
+Gary Myers we fished both sides, the first day was the offshore side and this episode was the inshore side. I believe on the south end but I’m honestly not sure
Copper Rockfish are AKA the ChuckleHead. One of the larger leagal (in California) My family rates it only #2 eating. Lingcod has always been out favorite.....(No arguments, it is just our opinion)
Great Video Robert! I have a fishing club meeting tomorrow and will tell the teacher to send you an email. I have it but to make sure what is it again?
+SFL Fishing - Fresh and Salt Water id rather not post it here too many times man, don’t want someone to see it and start spamming me. If you didn’t write it down shoot me a message on IG and I’ll send it over
+South Carolina Fishing & Hunting yep, this is 60 miles off the coast of Southern California. Check out the 2 videos before this one for more info on the trip
+Ian Adams I’m going to do a VLOG episode explaining some ideas for how to make a living doing WHATEVER it is you’re passionate about. Keep your eye out for it.
+Virtual Gamer123 no, it’s actually DEFINITELY not a flounder. They’re closely related and look very similar, but flounder live in the gulf and Atlantic, different ocean. There are multiple species of what I call “flat fish” like flounder, sole, sand dab, and halibut. This one I’m told was a sand dab.
Robert Field Oh, okay. I thought it was a flounder. Thanks for informing me. I started to really like your channel, so I wanted to say keep up good work!
Yes, that happens because of the depth. the pressure lowers as you reel them up, so their air bladder expands and essentially pushes their stomach out of their mouth
It’s basically their stomach/esophagus from what I understand. Basically their air bladder expands when you bring them up from that deep due to the pressure change, which pushes their stomach away and out their mouth. It’s best to keep those fish if you’re going to eat them. Otherwise you can pop I️t using something small to release the pressure. I️t’ll let them go down and the little Hole should heal quickly. Even better, they sell a specialized tool you can use to pop it.
I’m not an expert when it comes to the field of deep sea fishing, but because Robert pulled the fish up fro so deep, would it be bad to release the deep sea fish because of the condition they are in?
+Marc Oliu we try to pop the bladder to release the pressure. There’s also a tool you can use to do it. Most went down fine but a couple struggled, so those we scooped up and kept
I hope that your group didn't attempt to release those rockfish without a proper descending device. All that I saw had their swim bladder inflated and almost certainly will die.
What an amazing environment that must be to fish in, everyone is there to have a good time helping each other catch stuff. Can't beat that.
SUCH a fun trip. They do it every year! Highly recommended
I was stationed in San Clemente island. Best duty station if you’re in the navy and love fishing. Caught a HUGE White Sea bass off the rocks .. sheep head, bass, leopard sharks, bat rays, it’s really a good place to fish
That’s awesome! I was wondering if that station would be boring. Didn’t even think about fishing while on duty! Such a rad island
It really is! It a Airfield and the SEALS third phase training facility is on that island. Small Bar, gym, its a nice spot. On weekends we would bring the boats out and drop anchor then fish all day. Miss that place foreal!
My Idol!!! I'm sure it's a lot of work but your living all of our dreams of doing nothing but fishing. Keep up the great work and videos.
+bmiller8255 it’s definitely a ton of work, but I’m enjoying the process and having a blast. Thanks bro!
Biggest L-cod (28 pnds) I landed in Ca waters was a hitchhiker on a 2pnd redeye..... My days of fishing these type of waters are past...……...thank you for reminding/taking it to a whole new level.
Such a cool fish and state! Glad you enjoyed it brother
I think that flatfish was a Dab, you can tell because you can see right through its belly. One must of escaped the shores of the south east of England! Teeming with them round here. Thanks for another great video! Keep em coming!
+chris singleton haha lots of sand dabs in California waters too from what I hear. Can’t ever tell them apart from sole or baby halibut.
Must be awesome to experience all these different species to fish. You’re doing a great job
+Yakin with Jack chasing new species is my favorite thing to do. I’m having a blast for sure!
Seriously mate, these videos are better than any TV show. Great adventures. Summer weather is finally here in Australia. Time to get the yak and the rods out ! Cheers.
+Spartan117TCF thanks for the kind words brother. Good luck out there! I hope to make it out that way someday
That Sand Dab was LING BAIT! Next time put a 7/0 hook through it and send it to the bottom, and get ready to PULL!!!
+Getting Bent With Bo good to know! I can’t ever tell the difference between those and baby halibut, so I’m always scared to illegally use something for bait haha
Man, I swear by those B52 bucktail jigs. I always hook up with those and a strip of squid. Especially in San Clements Island.
They work great!
California has great fishing opportunities . everywhere you turn there's fish ,all types,. .California rocks .great fishing videos Robert fields like always.
Very true
Your Videography is pretty nice.I have also been towed back to shore by my friend
when I filled my kayak hull full of water due to a hatch fail. Live and learn.
One time I handled a baby squid and it took a bite out of my hand.

+7citiesfishing thanks man! Having a blast for sure
A little tip for you guys is to use a jig head instead of a dropper loop you can keep the bait where ever you want and have a little mor control over the bait
Solid advice but when we’re fishing 120 feet I’m not sure I’d know what to do with more bait control haha.
I love your videos. High quality and I spent hours watching them at work to kill time lol.
I don’t know why you don’t have a lot more subscribers.

You sir have lots of time and money...great job
I actually have very little of both. But this is my job, so this is how I spend my time and how I make my money. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hope you're using a descending unit on those fish you release or you're just wasting good fish to float dead
+Bentrod yakker we popped their bladders and let them go. If they didn’t go down quick we scooped em up and kept them. I don’t have a descending unit, but I’ll invest in one before I go back out there. I’ve never fished that deep before

+Zac Stratton fishing thanks for watching em Zac!
Double fistin em! Another awesome video man! What kind of reel is that you have paired up on your red jigging rod?
+Kayaking_Kennedy it’s a Siegler Reels SG. Love it
Looks like you were fishing the front side. Which end?
A lot of the fish you caught the majority were salmon grouper aka boccacio
+Gary Myers we fished both sides, the first day was the offshore side and this episode was the inshore side. I believe on the south end but I’m honestly not sure
Nice fish Robert
+trevor osteen thanks Trevor!
Copper Rockfish are AKA the ChuckleHead. One of the larger leagal (in California) My family rates it only #2 eating. Lingcod has always been out favorite.....(No arguments, it is just our opinion)
Great vid
+Philip Stempien thanks Philip!
Dang you only got the small calicos that sucks usually u catch 2-6lbers there but at least u caught calicos rockfish and lingcod
+Anthony Yang yeah the calico bite was off those days for some reason. We expected to catch a bunch but they just weren’t biting for some reason
Shoulda used that sand dab as bait, Lingcod candy!!
+stegmandd ahhh good to know! Wasn’t sure if that was legal or not

Robert Field ok no worries I have it. Sorry for bothering u so much.
Did those fish you released with their eyes popping out survive?
+Salt n Freshwater NZ most went down okay after we popped the swim bladder. Some struggled so we scooped em back up and kept those
great video
+Wicky thanks bro!

WHY ARE YOU NOT AT 1 MILLION?? also come fishing in Campbell river, BC, Canada. salmon capital in the world+I live here :)
That was a nice fish
+The Master152535455565 we got into some good ones!
Robert Field trip you are the best
Getting into fishing because of your videos. Saw you mention Fishbrain. Do you have a profile I can follow?
What was the boat they were coming out and giving you beer on
+Rise Insanityy it’s some type of inflatable, zodiac maybe?
Can I ask what rod and reel is that red one you always use? I believe you've said it was custom made for you but just wondering?
+bmiller8255 the rod is a custom built by a guy named Mark Crouse. The reel is a Siegler Reels SG
Robert Field What are the specs on that rod?
How do you have the money to do all this after quitting your job?
+Ian Adams I’m going to do a VLOG episode explaining some ideas for how to make a living doing WHATEVER it is you’re passionate about. Keep your eye out for it.
Robert Field Did this Vlog ever get done? Address?
That drone footage is Dope. I just lost my first drone...😢
+Robert Holton ahhh bummer dude.
That flat fish you caught is 100% a flounder. I don't know what kind of flounder, but I know its a flounder.
Virtual Gamer123 it was a sand dab
+Virtual Gamer123 no, it’s actually DEFINITELY not a flounder. They’re closely related and look very similar, but flounder live in the gulf and Atlantic, different ocean. There are multiple species of what I call “flat fish” like flounder, sole, sand dab, and halibut. This one I’m told was a sand dab.
Robert Field Oh, okay. I thought it was a flounder. Thanks for informing me. I started to really like your channel, so I wanted to say keep up good work!
I hope to do the same when I grow up
+NDH Reefing I’ve only been fishing for 5 years man. If I can do it, you definitely can.
9:22 was actually a speckled rockfish not a bocca
+Scott hmmm never even heard of that one. There’s too many to keep up with! Haha
Should have used the Sand dab for lingcod
Someone else told me that. Wasn’t sure if it was legal. Now I know for next time!
whats that stuff coming out of its mouth. never seen a rockfish before, is it the guts?
Yes, that happens because of the depth. the pressure lowers as you reel them up, so their air bladder expands and essentially pushes their stomach out of their mouth
ye thanks for the info, your the only one that i have asked a question and has replied back twice in a row now in a day :)
Hey guys what is a good fishing kayak, on a budget, I'm 6'1, 230, btw
Some solid, cheaper options are the Pelican Catch 120, Vibe Sea Ghost and Perception Pescador Pro.
What kind of rod is that red one with the seglier
It's a custom built by a guy named Mark Crouse.
I am a huge fan man
+Califisher04 Califisher04 thanks bro!
Robert Field will u follow me on insta
Haha new show idea, kayak 911 tow service.
+John Dustin hahah
What’s the go pro hat called he has on?
It’s an ActionHat, www.actionhat.com - it floats with a GoPro on it!
What was sticking out of the some of the fishes mouth ?
It’s basically their stomach/esophagus from what I understand. Basically their air bladder expands when you bring them up from that deep due to the pressure change, which pushes their stomach away and out their mouth. It’s best to keep those fish if you’re going to eat them. Otherwise you can pop I️t using something small to release the pressure. I️t’ll let them go down and the little Hole should heal quickly. you get so much nice fish and they cook you prime rib?
I’m not an expert when it comes to the field of deep sea fishing, but because Robert pulled the fish up fro so deep, would it be bad to release the deep sea fish because of the condition they are in?
Marc Oliu no they recover pretty quickly but yes they will float around because there air bladder will inflate but a lot of the they are fine
Yak MN Ok thanks!
+Marc Oliu we try to pop the bladder to release the pressure. There’s also a tool you can use to do it. Most went down fine but a couple struggled, so those we scooped up and kept
Robert Field Thanks!
What is the red fishing rod he is using
It’s a custom
Ok so the red rod and reel combo
The rod is a custom build by a guy named Mark Crouse. The reel is a Seigler Reels SG.
What type of kayak do you own?
+Dominic Aguilar I own a few but I’m in a Hobie Outback in this vid
I hope that your group didn't attempt to release those rockfish without a proper descending device. All that I saw had their swim bladder inflated and almost certainly will die.
Nice video
+Margaret Giesbrecht thanks Margaret!
That is correct, first fish is a copper.
+Bryce Piper nice. Someone else said canary. I can’t keep em all straight haha
What pound main line and leader
40 main 30 leader
upload more please!
+just seiren weekly episodes is as fast as I can crank em out. Doing my best but the editing takes time!
Do the eyes on the fish go back to normal after being released
+liljoker123456 they should when it goes back down
