  • Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 11:19. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of the popular Bluegrass tune Wreck of the Old 97, "... an American [song about a] rail disaster involving the Southern Railway mail train, officially known as the Fast Mail, while en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, on September 27, 1903. Due to excessive speed in an attempt to maintain schedule, the train derailed at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, where it careened off the side of the bridge, killing eleven on-board personnel and injuring seven others." (Wikipedia)
On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free downloadable tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website,
    www.littlerockbanjo.com.
    Hope you enjoy.

Bill - thanks once again for the breakdown of a classic. You teach us an important lesson for every learned skill in life: slow, deliberate practice leads to fast, precise execution. Thanks so much for your instruction!

Bill, it took me a little while to “get in tune” with your teaching style. I’m glad I stuck with you until I got it. You are one of my go to online instructors. I like the way you add the guitar chords & build speed. It perfectly compliments your laid back teaching style. Well Done!

I've said it before and likely will again. I really appreciate you taking the time. I've enjoyed being taught by you for a couple months now, and am definitly picking up the banjo well! Hopefully I can pick as good as you some day!! Thanks again!

Same here. Bill is unlike the other banjo UA-camrs because he doesn't care about the money, he cares about passing it on to younger generations.
