Trains on the Stony Point line - Melbourne Transport

- In this video we see some trains on the Stony Point line, a single track railway on the Mornington Peninsula running from Frankston to the small town of Stony Point. It is the only line operated by Metro Trains Melbourne that isn't electrified, therefore using V/Line Sprinter DMU's to operate the service. We also see a clip of the long island steel train heading towards Hastings. We also see DERM 58RM at a couple of locations on a special charter train to Stony Point, including a fantastic horn show at Tyabb.
At the time of uploading passenger services on the line had just resumed after being suspended for over three months from April 2015 due to the Sprinter railcars failing to trigger level crossings. During this time Metro installed axle counters on the line to permanently resolve the issue.
I'd like to thank youtube user and my good friend MRPSK177 for helping me create this video by transporting me across the line to film at the various spots. Check out his channel and subscribe because he deserves it!

Why was this recommended to me after 7 years, I’m not complaining tho
I dont know why the Stony Point line is operated by V/Line when its only a suburban line. V/Line only does country services across Victoria.
The Stony Point Line is operated by Metro Trains Melbourne using Metro crews; being the only line operated by Metro that isn't electrified. Metro leases two Sprinter DMU's from V/Line to operate the services.
@@ThebusofdoomFSX oh ok
I wish they added 3 Car vlocities and N Class Locomotives to the Stony Point Line.
Well it is a suburban line, but sure, it would be nice if they did
What a beautiful train.
I'd rather ride on the blue & yellow diesel car than the modern sprinter anyday.
Never thought I’d hear the sound of a GM diesel on our sleepy railroad
2x inline 6-71N's iirc.
Yet for years the service had been run by one of the "B" class diesels with a conventional train set. Indeed wasn't it a problem with a teenager jumping off one of those trains when asked for a ticket that lead to the automatically closing doors on train sets more generally?
A classes rean for a while, which a modified B class
Two DERMs used to operate to Baxter and one would detach and run to Mornington.
@@darylcheshire1618 not only A class locomotives but also Xs. Ts. Bs. The occasional P class. And also DRCs with trailers
thank you for publishing the great video.
Very interesting video of the trains of Victorian Railways.
Good we still have the train to stony point
Shame they took out the link to Mornington
@@percystreet Gosh, that was closed over 40 years ago.
Cool I'm on the line watching this video going to tyabb!
I have been on the Derm (A.K.A Diesel Electric Rail Motor) which is the blue and yellow train. I also try to race the Long Island steel mill train(which is the freight train) on my bike along the Baxter trail.
Jozef Djeri I do that to
Hopefully one day this line will become a regular suburban service.
Get on it
Hey so there's a station at Leawarra but whats happened to Langwarrin station? Its a growing area, why did they abolish Langwarrin? and why the bloody hell isn't there a train service to Mornington?
because it was the cost out weighed the use it was going to get but the is not talk of duplication to hastings with elecrification and reopening the mornington line to rosebud and still a single line from hastings to stony point but with elecrification
@@DERAILER83 Ok but you and I agree on a suburban train service to Hastings and Mornington. gotta happen!!!!!
They abolished langwarrin station when they closed the army base there and the land fell in to private hands and the site of the station is actually nowhere near to the actual suburb but is in the middle of scrubland
@@roadwolf2 Oh ok. I just remember seeing it on maps in my Melways years ago. As long they provide train stations where they are needed. Mornington needs to happen!!
@@jacintaedwards1123 I agree.
Went on this line when I visited Aus on 2012.It was wonderful!.I have a video on my channel.
Like that around 8:25 sprinter driver pulled up alongside the derm.

Ahh, that beautiful Victorian Sun
Your video makes me want to go on it now :)
So these are regional area railways managed by the Victorian Government?
i am so happy i have seen this video i am the happiest person in the world
+Moonlight Shadow Glad you enjoyed the video.
I've been curious, why don't Metro just electrify the line between Frankston to Stony Point and then rename the Frankston line to the Stony Point line?
Thunderturbine88 I think they are they. I heard somewhere that they are planning to electrify the line to Baxter the might go further in the future
Thunderturbine88 not enough patronage
@@lachlantrainvideos Yes, but I think that will eventually change....
Thunderturbin88 because the cost they also want to reopen the old mornington line and extened it to rosebud and elecrify the line from frankston to stony point and duplicate it to hastings and reopen the mornington line to rosebud
@@DERAILER83 ok yes there's that as well
I don't get why metro just doesn't have power lines along the stony point line
Theh don't have enough passangers on the line so it would be inefficient if they did
Why is a freight train going onnthe Stony Point line? I thought it was only for passengers.
It services the Bluescope steel Mills at Hastings. The Mills have their own rail sidings.
The freight train service the Bluescope steel Mills at Hastings. The Mills have their own sidings.
the freight probably justifies retaining the Stony Point line at least to Hastings. This probably ensures it’s survival when the LNP govt is in office as it “pays it’s way”
I thought the Stony Point line was closed. Or, is it? I mean, is this the line between Frankston station and Stony Point?
Yes, it’s been closed twice but reopened. Been open since 1995
Do you think Metro should keep the line? or remove it? I mean is their a lot of people who use the line? Great Video though. Hopefully you do this again in the future.
We must keep this line .
People use It
As population density increases on the peninsula. you could only think that the line will slowly become more used, and so justifying electrification at some point in the future.
Neil Mansfield they r going to extend line beyond Frankston in future
