Surfed Banda Aceh in 2019. As someone previously mentioned the Tsunami museum is pretty surreal, was quite an overwhelming experience to learn about the sheer mortality of the event. All the staff had there own individual stories about their experience. The waves around the coastline are pretty special, don't think they were affected too much.
Visited the Tsunami Museum in Aceh and it's really depressing. You can also visit some huge Boats that where washed thousands of meters inside the town from the Tsunami.
One of the best waves in the world, Kumari point in the Andaman Islands was destroyed by the uplift from the quake. It's still there, but is sectiony and way too dry now. Used to be a full freight train barreling right for hundreds of meters! Hardly anyone had ever surfed it before it was destroyed. Also the Nias reef uplift was from the March 2005 Simeulue-Nias quake, it didn't happen in 2006.
I can still remember the 2004 “Boxing Day” tsunami & thought it was horrible when it happened, only to run into one of the older surfer, I looked up to growing up a few months later! Tony was his name, he was a head valet @ Trump’s “Mar-o-largo” estate in Palm Beach, for many years at that point, but it was in March ‘05 I ran into him checking the waves in P.B. & he told me how his fiancé was in Thailand for a scuba diving trip, & how she had survived the tsunami but a day later due to overcrowding, the boat she was on went down off the Thai coast, in the middle of the night, due to overcrowding! Saying he was devastated would be an understatement! She had a 5 year old, going on 6 year old son, whom he had raised as his own son up to that point. So the woman he wanted to spend his life together with was gone & so was the boy, going to sperm donor, who had wanted nothing to do with the kid from day one! He was never the same & I do think of him sometimes because he was a good man, but especially when I’m reminded of this horrific natural tragedy! Thanks for sharing Dan & keep posting videos because the world needs more voices like yours out there! Regards from Florida!
Whats interesting is the 2010 earthqiake in mentawai southern region caused uplift of many waves such as rags left, and made the wave worse. The 2010 earthquake did create one wave on south pagai, which is now one of the most perfect waves in the ments. This wave is a favourite of many but cant be named, as will be flooded with kooks, as its easy to surf.
The quake and tsunami struck North Sentinel Island in the Nicobar chain too, but when they flew a chopper over to assess damage, one of the Sentinelese men fired an arrow at them and that was that. From the satellite images it doesn't look like it did the surf any harm. Had a fascinating time researching the island and really enjoyed your video on it ua-cam.com/video/qtHF3DspWLw/v-deo.html
Shame that all your times are in GMT, it seems. In the Indian ocean, all tsunamis hit land during the daylight hours, people were awake and on the beach as the water drained, as witnessed by the many videos.
hey mate, big respect for the quality of content you're putting out.
Agree
Thank you :)

excellent posting mate, for several reasons
Glad you enjoyed it

Good on you for producing this vid. Not many people know much about how wiped out the area was hit.
So cool!great info thanks for the research appreciated cheers
Thanks Dan, great info - thanks for sharing!
Great vid buddy 😎
Thanks Gavin :)
Thank you Dan , ❤
Good info
would be interesting to hear any first hand reports of anyone surfing there if they made it
Respect to those who lost family and friends. 227000 lives wow devastating.
Interesting idea for a video! Just one little thing, was it not the 26th of December? Thanks
Yes it was!! Can't believe I got that date wrong!!

Hey mate!! Ahh wicked, thanks for the info but what a shame to lose a wave like that! Ahh ok, thanks for clarifying :)
@@DanHarmon123 I think I might have even mentioned about Kumari on one of your older videos.
I thought it happened during daylight hours. Lots of video of it hitting during the day.
Did not mention Nias ! Where the reef was elevated creating a more barrel wave.
Because that was caused by a different earthquake that happened shortly afterwards in March 2005.
It is mentioned, but as the comment below explains, it wasn't the 2004 tsunami that changed the reef :)

I believe your times are GMT, not local times
The earthquake and tsunami happened at 8 am. Not 1:00 am. That's why there is so much video footage
Yeah, odd timeline considering everything happened in daylight.
And...it was December 26th.
Dan when the animals are heading for the high country and the humans are heading to the coast to scoop up fish. Follow the animals 😂
Humans are animals. Not the smart ones.

26th of December Boxing Day
Damn! I realised that haha, said the wrong date in the first sentence 😂
@@DanHarmon123 all good dude 😂👍
@@DanHarmon123 actually it depends some places around the world it would of been the 25th…
👍😔
Dan, my wife and I were in Arugam Bay, a the stardust hotel. Were lucky to survive, just by the skin of our teeth.
Wow David! So glad to hear that, what a crazy experience!!
