As India signs on a long-term deal with Iran to lease the strategically important Chabahar Port in the Gulf of Oman, here’s what External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has to say about the agreement. According to the minister, the deal with clear the way for huge investments by India as it clears the air on the long-term lease between the two nations. The deal is strategically crucial as it opens the way to central Asian nations for India. The port helps India bypass Pakistan, China and Afghanistan to reach these markets. It also counters the Chinese presence at Gwadar in Pakistan.
