Girlfriend just brought this car. She is well pleased. I drive a Golf and I was impressed with the build quality. I was especially impressed about the fuel sipping ability. I literally thought something was wrong with the fuel gauge. We put £40 in drove 160 miles and it didn't even take out £10 worth of fuel. Gob smacked. It does really well with fuel. Must be about 65mpg. My old golf is 30mpg.
With all due respect I prefer glossy metal to cheap plastic. Dunno about elbow comfort but exposed door metal looks better and gives a slight retro feel to this car. I wouldn't classify that as a downside.
I don't think that covering the metal parts on doors with just plastic helps anything. I prefer the exposed metal actually. The suspension really feels nice! A great little car indeed.
I like the gloss panel in the interior. Also I like coloured panel in doors. All these make vw up more beautiful.I like the lights of vw up. I prefer up because suspension is comfort, good handling, smooth ride..Vw up is the best in city cars
2021..Wife's had a five door for six years..it's a little beast. I'm 6ft tall, and in the driver's seat there's a ton of room. Sitting there you feel like you're in a larger car.
Recently I read that they had scrapped distributing the UP! here in Australia and bemoaning the fact they didn't have enough sales here. I think one of the main reasons was, that it was only offered in manual transmission, and, although manuals are popular in Europe, Automatics are the most popular here and manuals are fairly rarely sold by dealers and it is harder to sell manual cars too. So please bring back the UP! but in auto and I think you will see sales.
Yes I have driven both. Of course the 208 is going to be quieter, roomier and slightly more comfortable but the UP! is obviously better in the long run.
We had a test drive in one of these about 8 weeks ago my wife thought it was a great car I drove it and found it very smooth over bumps,of which there are plenty in GB.1 week later she ordered 1, 5 doors auto, with leather seats VW do great deals.we pick up this weekend and I will report back soon.
Jesus George please get in touch…we are worried sick…it’s been 8 long years…I hope both your wife and the leather seats are still in great condition. …???
Once in a while you get both a cheap and good car.. it's like when Companies for some reason let their engineers do a good job. it had its quirks but nothing major and when you add the price tag and the overall performance, this was far more satisfying in the long term than many of the other cars on the road.
This Up has two sister cars coming out. The Seat Mii and The Skoda Citigo. All three cars exactly the same underneath. But the Mii and Citigo have a laser that detects the car in front and applies the breaks if you don't. Not sure if the Up has this feature. The Seat looks extremely cute, even in the 5 door version.
I can't deny it. I actually liked this little car. I thought the tin panels on the inside were nice. Normally, Mat makes valid complaints. But this time, it really looked like he was looking for something negative to say. A tiny car with spunk.
A car that won't annoy people if it cuts them up? Hmm maybe I should get it and see how many junctions I can go out at without stopping. The car's cheeky enough to get away with it right? :D
I really wish VW mad a hot version on the up!, with 1.2 tsi and with uprated suspension and breaks and so on, they seem like they would be a really fun car.
What is actually a déjà vu? 1. You lost one life and you have to re-start the current level from the beginning. 2. Somebody went back in time and changed your future. 3. It's the joining link between 2 different lives, after re-incarnation. 4. We are characters in a movie whose tape is being re-winded. 5. A brain short-circuit. 6. Haven't I read this reply comment already?
As to Mat from CarBuyer who is otherwise probably the best reviewer in the automotive world, tell me just one thing. What is all that exposed interior door metal in those small cars such a big deal for? In what way does covering it with plastic make it better? Thanks.
You think TDI engines are unreliable? I've had my A8 3.0TDI do 1300km at an average speed of 130mph (from London to the south of Italy) with only 1 break in between. The journey took 9 hours. No problems whatsoever before, during and after the journey. She's still running like she's new today. I'm pretty sure that TDI engines are very reliable. I know that because I have tried them.
More spacious: you are right, a bit more luggage capacity in the up! compare to panda. Interior: I can't believe you honestly think up!'s interior is more refined the the new panda's. Look better: I believe most people prefer panda's design over up's, whether they are old or young, a car that looks like a tuna can just can't look good. Then you still get a panda with more hp and better fuel economy for the same price.
Who exactly is the 'target market' of the VW Up? I ask this because my grandparents have just taken delivery of one. I always assumed it was targeted at more younger people.
The Fiat 500 is based on the same Fiat Panda's platform, but it costs a bit more... Anyway it is sad that many car makers think that Americans aren't even slightly interested in city cars...
Fiat Panda is a symbolic car and the old generation is still famous around europe. If we were talking about another fiat like punto or qubo you were right but panda is different. Panda is the only proper car that fiat ever made.
+Ms Tommyknocker have you actually owned or driven one? I sincerely doubt it would be worse than all other car in its class, and knowing VW it should be better than most.
They deleted the old version of this review, and re-edited it. Maybe Mat wasn't satisfied with a few aspects of the previous version. I wondered why 2 videos were missing a few days ago.
Yes the Rabbit is known as "Golf" outside of the U.S. , and no doubt the the Vdubs imported from Germany were the best, and still are the best. I love my car, but i dont think ill be buying a VW if it comes from anywhere near Puebla, Mexico lol.
It is what golf should have bean. Car makers and especially VW group make each new car bigger than it's predecessor and later they find out, that they lack a smaller car and put a new one in the range. Now polo is the same size as golf used to be and this one is about the same size as golf Mk I. In 20 years golf will be something like a SUV.
- more spacious? no - more refined interior?no - more hp for price?big difference - look better...erm, maybe if you are under 25 years old and want a car that screams teenager. The up! on the other hand is reserved, well designed and very contemporary classic in its design - cheaper? the up! is not going to break anyone's bank dude the up! drives better than anything in its class and probably better than KIAs 2 classes above it
Tested both Up and Peugeot 208 (I know there is a class difference but that really doesn't matter). Peugeot give so much more and is so much more fun to drive that there is really no comparison. Up is cheap all the way and looses on every point, but don't believe me, test for yourself and make up your own mind please! The price difference is minimal.
the interior of the up is the most refined in it's class, (not in the version in this video), it even has a (optional) emergency breaking system. hp depends also on the model theres a gt version of the up is going to follow next year and when it comes to fuel economy the eco up (coming to markers aprox later this year) has the worlds lowest CO2 emmision of any mass produced car. The up deservs it's title for best city car from various car magazines around the world.
Why do you think you hear more about VW Golf TDI's and Polo TDI's breaking down than any other cars? Because they are the most popular in the world. You're not going to be hearing about so many cars breaking down from an unpopular car manufacturer are you? The TDI is in fact a very reliable engine and nobody can deny that.
+Moreira Da Lima The UP is. I have driven the fiat 500 alot and i think the up drives better and it also does more km/l or mpg, and where i live the Up is alot quite alot cheaper then the fiat 500
For the price of Up we can buy better equipped Panda. Also Panda is avaiable with LPG, CNG and diesel engines. So is clearly much more economical than a Citigo/Up/Mii.
then what twin air standing for? Engine of the year awarded. Petrol and economical as a diesel. well I got nothing to say about it because it has the best of everything
godfatherNYC I have had the Up! for two years and it's great on the highway and going up hills is no problem but if you are doing 55 to 60 km's then get a hill it struggles a little but otherwise it a great little car. Only problem in Australia servicing is expensive so i just do it myself.
sam k It definitely looks like a nice, fun little car. I wish we had them here in the USA, honestly. Would be a nice cheaper alternative to a Golf, and a great City car. Just kidding around with my previous joke :)
he also stated that he loved this too.. he just has a past with pandas so would always choose one over this.. but he said he would definately consider one of these
Believe me, if a reviewer says that the interior is the best in its class I would start to think that VW paid him to say that, just take a look at its rivals like panda and picanto.
The VW up is not a rival to the Peugeot 208 because the Up is aiming at the city car category like the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and the Peugeot 107. The Peugeot 208 is in the small car market with cars like the Volkswagen Polo, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3. also if you have been reviews of the Peugeot 208 they say that its just as good if not better than the Fiesta just the driving position isn't great and you can't have experienced the Peugeot 208 yet to say the VW up is better than it.
I got one today for my first car and am absolutely chuffed with it
Nice! How exciting 😀
Are you able to give an update on how you've been finding it?
I've just sold my BMW X5 4.8is and bought a Volkswagen up! It's brilliant.
Whenever an Up! pulls out in front of me, I often laugh and think "what a cheeky little car".
Looks funny, but seems like got a nice cabin for it's sides

Right I'm buying one lol
With all due respect I prefer glossy metal to cheap plastic. Dunno about elbow comfort but exposed door metal looks better and gives a slight retro feel to this car. I wouldn't classify that as a downside.
This is one of the best cars VW has made, very cheap to run and buy, its well equipped and practical. It even looks nice :D
Nice car.
How much does it cost to buy one

I don't think that covering the metal parts on doors with just plastic helps anything. I prefer the exposed metal actually. The suspension really feels nice! A great little car indeed.
Ace car, I’ve had mine around 18 months now and has never let me down, great on petrol too
I like the exposed metal on the doors. Reminds me of my VW Lupo which i will reluctantly have to replace one day.
I like the gloss panel in the interior. Also I like coloured panel in doors. All these make vw up more beautiful.I like the lights of vw up.

Carbuyer couldn't find cars to review so they thought that they would repost a video instead! Well played carbuyer! Well played!
Yes I have driven both. Of course the 208 is going to be quieter, roomier and slightly more comfortable but the UP! is obviously better in the long run.
Better than a fiat punto?

@@ImOothman You only waited 4 years to hear how his wifes new car was..I however have waited 8 years… so I win…for now…..(No more comments until 2026)
Scrapped altogether now in 2023, all over world!
Good cars are not worth selling anymore I guess?
That's VW for you.
I bought this car because of your review.
axelismydog how has it been? do you still have it?
Yooka: Why am I not surprised that Mat Watson mentioned the Kia Picanto, and the Hyundai i10?
this is the best car review website, and this guy is the best.
Just to let you know: if anyone pulls out on me in an Up, I will not let them get away with it because it's "box design" is "cheeky"
Cool, no one asked
Good review, Matt. Really, really like this car. It's the car the Toyota iQ should always have been.
Once in a while you get both a cheap and good car.. it's like when Companies for some reason let their engineers do a good job. it had its quirks but nothing major and when you add the price tag and the overall performance, this was far more satisfying in the long term than many of the other cars on the road.
Great car! I'm thinking of moving from a Peugeot 308 to this one.
Don't unless your peugeot is broken and its really hard and expensive to fix.
If they'd put the engine in the rear like they had on an early prototype I would have definitely bought one.
yes rear engine would have made it amazing.
Would have been cool, but a lame excuse for not buying one.
I went to a VW dealer today and they said that the up! is sold out in the UK. I'm guessing it's a good car :D

With smaller cars on the rise in the States, I would hope to see the Up coming here too.
Bring this to the U.S !
I can't deny it. I actually liked this little car. I thought the tin panels on the inside were nice.

Do they come with a spare tire as standed or is it spare wheel-less
This has been filmed in Hughenden Valley in Buckinghamshire.
I defo agree with you here!
I got myself a C1 Vibe, its brilliant!
he is a vw and ford lover for sure
Im not sure, but I think they added the part where Mat says that its a strictly 4 seater whereas the i10 can fit 5
I really wish VW mad a hot version on the up!, with 1.2 tsi and with uprated suspension and breaks and so on, they seem like they would be a really fun car.

this is a crosover of a large car and a smart car and it was made by germany and they put a quite fast engine and the back of an aygo a bit.
loved your review, Volks has started manufacturing this car in Brazil with a little changes, nice review
How is it different? Bigger wheelbase? Softer suspension?
MrGamerBoy It's a little bit longer to fit people better on the back and the trunk door is not entirely glass (or black) that's just it

Tip for everyone: If you want a decent cheap car that's better than a Peugeot 208 buy a VW UP!, it won't let you down.
