I go to harbor freight and buy bags of 0000 steel wool . They come in small rolls and I carry a few with me. I mostly have it as a scrub pad but also as a back up fire starter .

Great video, Jake! I played around with steel wool once. The wool wasn't fine enough so I had a hard time of it. This was a really good tutorial and I'm willing to give it another shot. Also, I appreciate the tip on how to use your knife for flint & steel. That's another something I need to work on. Have a great weekend!

I think carrying steel wool is a good idea because it is a versatile, viable way to start a fire. It is also good to clean off knife blades before sharpening so, you don’t gum up your stone, diamond sharpener or any sharpener with pitch or tree sap. One of my trades as a contractor was. Floor installations where, my main tools were razor blades and other knives. Because we constantly sharpened blades the first thing I learned was to steel wool your knife so you wouldn’t contaminate your sharpening stone with gunk accumulated on your knife. Also in this day and age where people are always looking for the new hottest products to start fires, the tried and true products are being forgotten and considered as old fashion. This seems to be because IMHO that survival has become a popular fad and people are trying to replace training with easy to use products. Except for a few products that I have seen, most new tinders are variations of each other where, the only big difference is the name and packaging. Thanks for the video, I’m sure someone, somewhere has learned something new. The 893

Another great video Jake! Helped me figure out what I did wrong using a 9v. I fluffed it up completely being afraid it wouldn't work as well being compressed. I see the error of my ways now, lol.

I think steel wool is more practical to carry than flint and steel cuz it is multifunctional, weighs less, and can be lit be finding a flint stone just about anywhere .... even that big old hank of steel wool in your video weighs far less than any flint and steel combo....
