One of the best artist to play the sax, ever.
Junior Walker was my friend and my influence on saxophone..I had the pleasure performing concerts with him in the 80s and before he passed in the early 90s…Thank you for sharing!
I love this song. Wish we had more music like this today.
I wish my family would talk more about him. He’s family and I knew nothing about him until a few years ago.
MIXON FAMILY
My favorite Jr. Walker and the All- Stars song is , What Does IT Takes !
I love Shotgun but this song comes to mind when I think of Jr Walker!
Greetings, i was the guitarist and bassist with Jr Walker & The Allstars through out the 80's and early nineties until he got sick with cancer! We were on a Motown tour the the Temptations the year he became ill! The last show he ever played was at the Apollo Theatre! During our concerts when the audience say "What Doe's It take". Jr would smile and say "A Whole Lotta Money Honey" Just one many stories from playing with this Sax legend! I will for sure do a youtube interview with some one sometime this year! Stay healthy and blessed.
@@horizontoday7874 cleo's mood also is one of my favs
@@DebiTerrell-f2d Oh absolutely! In fact, Motown had all the top notch songs in its day!
My absolute favorite 🎶👏🏽💃🏽
Please induct him into the R&R Hall of Fame. Great talent.
No one in my opinion could play the sax like him to me he was the greatest ever sax player. I loved everything that he played. Boy do I miss him and may his soul continue to rest in peace and in God's loving arms.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of those South Bend clubs that hosted Jr. Walker was owned by my grandfather. In fact, Billy "Sticks" Nicks and his own band, in a full circle moment, played at my grandfather's 89th birthday party. I was standing next to them when my grandfather asked Billy, "You don't remember me, do you? I gave you and Jr. your first gig!" The sudden look of remembrance and realization on Billy's face was priceless. A moment I'll never forget!
I've been a fan of Jr. Walker for decades. He was a highly underrated artist. My favorites by him are "Shake And Fingerpop", "Pucker Up Buttercup", and "Got To Hold On To This Feeling". The intro to this song with Jr. Walker's sax and the bass player penetrates your soul! RIP Jr. Walker. Your music is timeless.
And don't forget he played the tenor sax solo on Foreigner's hit single "Urgent."
I love his music….He should have been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame
Jr Walker should be in the rock and roll hall of Fame no question about it. He could blow that sax like no other and sing!!!! Shotgun he wrote.
There are many artists that should be in the R&R Hall of Fame but they aren’t!
I’d like to see Rare Earth if possible. Thanks.
If it makes you feel better..I agree..but..Little Feat aren't in yet either
@@glennso47and quite a few that don't belong..but ARE in
My favorite record of his, Was Gotta hold on that feeling. Jr. Walker was amazing Saxophone Player, and a Great Singer. How many People can Play and Sing like that. Only very Few. I Would loved, To See Mr. Whitaker Jr. Walker and the All Stars Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, They Deserve it. Thank you Again for Narrating these Singers who Deserves the Recognition that was needed! Awesome 👍😎
I love that 2 ❤
I'm not an entertainer, I highly recommend this video and yes Jr. Walker and The All Stars definitely need to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
My favourite too
I’m born and raised in Detroit… I seen all the Motown Artists from the beginning. Fresh and coming out the gate. Thanks to my Mother 🙏🙏🙏
What does it take, my personal favourite. Heard it early seventies, never tire of it. Roadrunner, these eyes, gotta hold on to this feeling etc. The sax in these songs, generates feeling good within oneself, along with goose bumps.
What a TALENT.
The sax in these
Jr. Walker was Master Saxophonist and genuinely nice guy. He really could perform magic with the Saxophone. My favorite Walker Solo can be heard in his song Hot Cha. Walker once said in an interview with Philly D.J.Georgie Woods that he never considered himself to be a good singer, but he was encouraged to add his vocals to his music by the executives at Motown. It looks like they knew what would work, and the rest is History. There has never been and probably will never be another Saxophone/ Singer with the energy and passion of Jr. Walker who patterned himself after Louis Jordan.
Well said!
Jr. Walker's playing is amazing. If you're a tenor player, just try to copy it. It's a big challenge! The sound is the thing. Plus those altissimo notes that can make your hair stand on end. "Hot Cha" has an altissimo shriek that never fails to delight me, make me smile, and send a charge up my spine. His level of R&B sax, IMO, rivals the great jazz masters in technical and spiritual mastery - just a different thing. Same goes for his great mentors, Earl Bostic, Lee Allen, etc.
Thanks for this heartfelt tribute. Walker, like his mentor Bostic, turned the sax into a real "sound machine."
In Bostic's day, there was also Big Jay McNeely and Joe Houston, big influences on R&B saxophone players.
Yes this music instantly takes me right back to my childhood days when the music was overflowing with love, peace and soul. Thank you for this video.
I'd be interested in a good bio of Willie Hutch. Dude's a legend, and there's too little about him out there. Love your work! 😁
Amen I totally AGREE❤❤❤❤❤ LOVE ME SOME WILLIE HUTCH❤
The Greatest!!!!!! I am 78. i covered Juniors hits when I was young. That means 350 nights a year. I loved his sound-sweet soul- and his singing was perfect.
I very much enjoyed this program, I think Jr Walker is one of the most underrated artists ever. He could sing and he blew the saxophone like no other person. It sounds like it was crying these eyes and my all time favorite what does it take just listen to it sometimes. Thank you and God bless you 🙏🏾 for your content very well done 👏🏿.
If you were there, he wasn't underrated at all. His records were heard all over the world. I heard Shotgun in Perth, Australia in 1969.
I am talking about all time in the history of music I don't feel he gets his just do. And he deserves 👏🏿 much more than they have given him that's all.
YESSSS. Jr. Walker and the All-Stars. Shotgun. Can't wait.
I recall R>C Crawford telling me how when he toured with him in the U.K and they met the band Foreighner in a restaurant, they were really fond of his work and they featured him on their next album, huge success!
Correct - Walker does that iconic solo on the Foreigner hit "Urgent" (even though the other non-solo sax parts on the tune were recorded by Foreigner's sax player, Mark Rivera): ua-cam.com/video/pVe4nMDr8VY/v-deo.html

Jnr Walker was my hero! His music has stayed with me for nearly 60 years & I never tire of it. I was lucky enough to meet him & his wife when he toured the UK. My favourite song is "Sweet Soul" it's mind blowing how he gets those high notes. Not in the Hall of Fame!! Well he should be. 🙏
Thanks sooo much for this documentary. Had hoped there would be an “Unsung” episode on them.
You hit the ball out of the park!
Walk In the Night was 1 of my favorite songs by Jr. Walker and the All Stars.
Tremendous sax player. Better than some in the modern day today. My favorite song from him and the All Stars is These Eyes. Can listen to that over and over
One of his last performances, he was asked to do a sax solo for the hit song Urgent from the group called Foreigner I believe
I would like to see a documentary on Willie Hutch...thank you.

Grew up listening to Junior Walker & The AllStars. Gonna share this with my father. He loved this group & has all their Albums/LP's. When I heard "Shoutgun" I immediately thought of the movie "Cooley High." Thanks for this.
My Grandmother who watched us after school and in the summers while my Mom worked loved all the Motown groups and played their music till the records wore out. I remember from Junior Walker and the All Stars Shake and Finger Pop, Gotta Hold On To This Feeling, Roadrunner and What Does It Take. My Grandmother and Mom were both from Detroit.
I saw Junior in 1982 during his uk tour with Martha Reeves.
It was a good concert with people getting up and dancing in front of the stage.
Great video on Jr Walker! I enjoyed watching this and I learned so much about him. He was a great artist on Motown and one of the greatest saxophone players of all time. I love the songs like Shotgun, Cleo's Mood Cleo's Back , Roadrunner, and What does it take to win your love. Keep up the good work and hope you do either Willie Hutch or Undisputed Truth in your next Motown Legends videos soon. Strive for Excellence.
He killed urgent !!!!! Absolutely killed it
Jr Walker sure did kill it on Urgent I was jamming hard what Jr Walker!?!? Yeah
Lot of great memories attached to Jr. Walker's music, thanks for the showcase. I have request, Gil Scot Heron, Angela Bofil and Parlament and the Funkadelicks. if i misspelled my appologies.
Heron was wrong; The Revolution Will Be Televised and on cell phones.
Jr. Walker was an excellent saxophonist who was very well polished in his vocals and the sound of his horn. Several of his songs were my favorites including the smooth song "What Does It Take"! Rest un peace and in power Jr. Walker.
You did great kid, since this was way before. your time. But you left out the one that my older brother was crazy about was HOTCHA. Give it a listen. Well done!👍🏽👍🏽

I just brought my 12 year old grandson a Eastar tenor saxophone for a very reasonable price 449. All I want is hear him play “What does it take” and it will be the best 449 I have ever spent
I can't wait to see it
I grew up in San Jose California in the in the sixties and seventies. R&B ruled the Lowrider scene. Shotgun and What does it take , Cleo's mood and Cleo's back . Thank you Jr.
While growing up in Detroit, Jr. Walker was one of my favorite Motown artists! This was a great piece.
Great video! It's very important to keep the history and the memory of great artists like Jr. Walker and the All Stars alive for future generations. Jr Walker most definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it's long overdue! Time may have passed by since their era, but the fantastic musicianship and wonderful creativity and unique sounds they created will never die.
A friend and I were talking just the other day. The subject was about, living in the moment, and doing things you really want to do. I told her that one of the few regrets in life was not going to the Santa Monica Pier Summer Concert, and seeing Junior Walker. I told my buddy I would meet him there, but went home, and though I planned to go, once I got home, I didn't go. I have never forgotten that, because Walker passed away the next year. If you you really want to do something, do it. Time is guaranteed to none of us. He was one of my favorites from the '60s. He had that raw vocal style, and blew the hell out of that horn. Roadrunner, and Shotgun, take me back to big parties at my grandparent's house. Thank you Junior. RIP.
Your videos are very well done. I enjoy hearing the good music clips of my younger years. These videos have prompted me to purchase some of the old songs I have forgotten about. They are very informative, you get to the point and don’t base your research on scandal. Keep up the good work 👍🏽
This is a master piece
The only two singles I recall hearing by this group on pop music radio in the Midwest were "Shotgun" and "What Does it Take" but I can see they were popular on the R+B charts. Great sounding group. Wonder what the "Cleo" thing was all about.. Wouldn't mind seeing a video on The Velvelettes. Saw them in concert once in L.A. and they were both mesmerizing and beautiful.
I actually liked both of those songs myself my mom played them a lot this was her time.
I loved their music shotgun is always will be a classic green onions too.

Ño body can't never ever take his place
Hello. Have you done a video of The 5 Stairsteps? They are commonly known as the 1st family of soul
Thank you for this report. I having lived this era am very grate full. We were going into the end of the 60's and I still remember hearing (What does it take) on 77-WABC in New York by Cousin Brucie! Do not understand how Mediocrity got hold of music like it is today. YOU HAVE TOUCHED A NERVE!! Not easy to do.Best wishes and do not stop. Blessings.
When a teenager, I was drawn to his take on R & B and was a little intrigued to learn that one of his early models on saxophone was Boots Randolph. But -- hmm ... it follows, curiously.
To wit, Boots Randolph and Jr. Walker could readily scale with ease those rarefied heights, that of the altissimo octave, a range that few if any saxophone players dared to climb and languish there. Yet Walker played there frequently without the slightest hesitation, adding vibrato. Just listen to Jr. Walker on his piece 'Sweet Soul' -- playing a beautiful, wavering vibrato; his altissimo always bright; its pitch, in point. That aside, Jr. Walker could really play, possessing a uniquely American sense, a seasoned ear. I wished that he'd recorded more works along the lines featured in his 'Soul Session' album.
Of his musical heritage, one could hear, indeed, the people and places that influenced him. One could hear the influence of the midwestern genre. Yet his playing continued to resonate with the east coast R & B feel. He was a master of upbeat blues, which proved why Motown featured him. One can argue that Berry Gordy fell short of extracting from him the untapped jewels that Walker possessed. Oh well, he was never a part of Motown's elite charm school anyway, the likes of The Supremes, The Temptations, The Miracles, The Four Tops, Mary Wells, The Vandellas, Marvin Gaye.
Nevertheless, his musicality proved pronounced. He inspired me to take up playing saxophone. I could not wait to hear whatever was his next Motown release, which to me were hallmarks, and O what character was his signature sound on the Bb tenor'! His influence on me set right up there with the outrageously great Jazz saxophonists of the 1940's through the 1960's, though Jr. Walker was scarcely a Jazz musician, oh, no -- indeed, 'twas no need to be ... Jazz was simply not his path.
Biggest hit.."What does it Take..To Win your Love" still sing it til this day...big hit 1969-1970
I like his music.
Please do one about the moments
I appreciate all the research you do about each group or Artist. I enjoyed this video. I request Carl Carlton he is from the Detroit area.

Thanks for giving Junior Walker the attention he desvered. I was very lucky to see him perform at the Wigan casino in May 1977, without doubt it remains the best performance I have ever witnessed.
Good to get his story out and he should be in RR HoFame! That's a shame. Great video

Loveeee Jr. Walker still the best horn player & I Loveee Johnny Bristol so much talent. They both left us way too soon. Listening today Nov. 2023. They both will always be my favorites.
There’s not one day that goes by that I always listen to, what does it take, it makes my day. Thank you Johnny🙏🏻
Thank you for this fine assessment and history lesson about the unsung heroes of the saxophone.
I highlighted Jr Walker in my masters degree presentation, dissertation at Berklee. Modern tenor players credit him and King Curtis as the fathers of R&B saxophone playing.
Funky. And the flutter tonguing technique!
They should go back further and find Big Jay McNeely and Joe Houston, without whom, there would be no Jr. Walker.
I allways have loved Jr.Walkers music. It does something to the Soul.Good vibrations.❤
You ought to do a episode on Love Unlimited, Barry White's.Girl Group, but REALLY though, you should the first RAYDIO episode, and what caused Jerry Knight, and Ollie Brown to leave, and what really made Ray Jr. go solo. Yeah, I'm a Music head to the fullest
Yea, that would be good!

I used to go listen to him play the saxophone when he was teen. He used to go to this one bar to play in Gary. As a fellow teen I got thrown out of there a couple of times.
Should be in the Rock ' Roll Hall of Fame.
Jr Walker is my all time favorite Saxophone player second to none! My personal fave is What Does it Take. My second favorite performance is Walkers appearance with the Classic Rock Group Foriegner with his scorching and blistering performance on the Foriegner song called Urgent where Walker stole the show with that incredible Sax performance! I am very pleased with your interview about the Motown artists and keep it up and I follow you immensely
Super job. I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. " I Don't Need A Reason" was another beautiful instrumental that Mr. Walker recorded.
Many thanks for doing this. He was a Supreme huMAN being at Motown. I wonder how many song did he play on that he contributed his sound to that didn’t get the recognition, that it was him? Do You See My Love was one of his songs that my sisters played repeatedly when I was a child. It ignited my ears as an adult to go find more and discovered, Walk In The Night. An Awesome song!
