  • Camping in the woods. Taking things back to basics with some primitive cooking.
This week I met up with ‪@SamsonsLeader‬ Jon muddy paws for an overnight camp out in a small wood surrounded by farmland. I used a bug net bivi that I'd picked up at a car boot sale, paired with my British army Gortex bivi bag. which made for an interesting night.
We thought we would have a go at clay baking, which is a primitive skill I've not tried before.
We wrapped a whole chicken in nettles, clay and then dry grass and built a fire around it to see if it would cook.

Absolutely brilliant video ! Between the nettles and the hay wrapping we were treated to wild camping, a successful cooking experiment, beer reviews and great comedic relief ! Thank you Dan and John. I haven’t laughed that much in a while 😂

Clay comes from the ground, usually in areas where streams or rivers once flowed. It is made from minerals, plant life, and animals-all the ingredients of soil. Over time, water pressure breaks up the remains of flora, fauna, and minerals, pulverising them into fine particles. For this particular spot,,,, I can confirm,,,,, it is very likely,,,,,, to be one of my "jobbies" ;)

An interesting camp, cooking chicken in nettles, clay and straw. I wonder how many will try this?
    Love your banter 😊

Superb entertainment! A lot of effort went into that dinner but it looked as though it paid off. Re sleeping mat- I am still verging on using 1 or 2 foam mats as I don't fully trust inflatable yet; you know better than I do, but I think this is the way I will keep to for now.

G'day Dan, Jon, great night out fellas and nice experiment muck'n about with "dinosaur poo". I have seen that method once before, though with clay alone, and in a pizza type oven, comes out similar to using a tagine. But hey, who's gonna carry that lot out in the sticks. Just goes to show what can be done out there with the natural materials at hand, excellent stuff guys !!!!!!
As a gardener, rather than a geologist, clay is simply very fine grained particles, thus retaining far more moisture than coarser sand, especially sub-surface. It does however, generally capture more vital growing elements/nutrients in doing so. I can tell you its far far easier to condition sandy soils, than clay, into ideally balanced "loam", by adding extra organic material.
So, or sow, ...... ; ) .... it's horses for courses, depending on what you want to grow, ..... or otherwise, do with it.
Btw; I have been getting on very well with the modern fruity flavoured IPAs, though cant say I've encountered a strawberry, or any other berry, job for that matter ...... yet ; )
Also, I have been known to have a robust red wine with white meat and even fish'n chips, but really .......... get a decent dry riesling or chardy in ya ; )
    Cheers Duke

Clay is just rock that's been chemically 'weathered' by carbonic acid in a process that's all sciencey. On the other hand, that shite you were using, being close to the surface, looked to have a lot of organic matter in it, some of which would undoubtedly have passed through various creatures' arses. All adds to the flavour... 😳🤣
(That heat would have killed pretty much anything untoward, I'm sure. Not that I'm in any way an expert. In anything.)
