  • The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Here are six common misconceptions about the Great Wall of China:
It can be seen from space. This is a popular myth, but it is not true. The Great Wall is too narrow and made of materials that do not reflect light well enough to be seen from space.
It was built to keep out the Mongols. The Great Wall was actually built centuries before the Mongols ever existed. It was built to protect the Chinese Empire from other nomadic tribes, such as the Xiongnu.
It is one continuous wall. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls and fortifications that were built over centuries by different dynasties. Many of these walls have crumbled or disappeared over time, but the sections that remain are still impressive.
It is made of solid stone. The Great Wall is actually made of a variety of materials, including brick, stone, earth, and wood. The materials used varied depending on the location of the wall and the dynasty that built it.
It was built by millions of slaves. While it is true that some slaves were used to build the Great Wall, the majority of the workers were farmers and peasants who were conscripted into labor.
It is the only man-made structure that can be seen from space. This is another popular myth, but it is not true. There are many other man-made structures that can be seen from space, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the International Space Station.
The Great Wall of China is a truly amazing feat of engineering and a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the Chinese people. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Whenever I watch a historical video about the Great Wall of China, I am reminded of the era of Genghis Khan when he invaded Beijing and massacred millions of people. Very well explained.
