I remember sitting at a hotel on vacation, we're all relaxing not thinking about anything. Then we turn on the TV to watch the Twins game, then suddenly while were still watching the game everyone starts leaving and the game stops, we wondered what happened, then my aunt called and told us what happen...my uncle was one of the workers on that bridge. He lived, but one of his closest friends who was just feet away from his didn't make it...
my mom took a wrong turn, if she went the right way my sister and her would've probably died, my sister was small and didn't know how to swim and my mom never got swimming lessons because her parents sucked
I live in Minneapolis, and I was on this 2 MINUTES before it happened, we were in traffic right after the bridge, and we saw it about 500 feet behind us. Scariest moment of my life.
my mom was pregnant with me at the time. my dad had decided to stay a little late at work that day and was only ten minutes away when the bridge collapsed. it’s so scary to thing about how if he didn’t decide to stay late I could’ve grown up without a dad in my life.
Looking out the window at the new bridge, it's almost possible to forget all of the chaos & sadness of that day & the weeks that followed. Went to the memorial yesterday. Never forget. ✌
The only thing I got from this is how well equipped Minneapolis is with emergency rescue workers, cops, ambulances, fire trucks, et cetera. I thought a bridge was going to fall down.
I remember the exact day this happened. I was watching it on the news for like 5 hours after it happened. I drove over that bridge before. And this is one of the worst moments in minnesota history.
i drove over the bridge about 6-8 hours before it happend.. i was on the way to the airport to fly out to Boston and i heard about it at the Boston Logan Airport on the news.. I was in total shock!
No it was not hit by a ship. It was just poor planning, the bridge relied on a set of gusset plates that were too thin. Before the bridge was built they had thicker plates in the design, but they installed thinner ones which worked just as well but the engineers did not account for harsh summers and winters along with road salt. The rust made them too weak to hold the maximum load and once one of the plates failed all the others did too.
Our governor at the time infamously said that "the dirt roads by his house worked fine enough" when he was confronted about how much he defunded MnDOT. Everything falls apart either when a republican's in office, or right after they leave.
Anyone who's lived in Minneapolis has used that bridge prior to its collapse. I was born at Hennepin County Medical Center in 1976. What a terrible day. 😓
the bridge malfunction was structural, not terrorism. A contributing factor to this bridges faiure was due to the extreme conditions of temperature ( -20 to 100+ ) road salt and basically what "kgladdy" posted. I'm from Minneapolis and have traveled on that bridge and I have spent time underneath it on both sides of the river. note: the gusset plates were riveted and the plates weren't thick enough.
The design is sound so long as the bridge is maintained and the gusset plates are of proper thickness, and so long as construction companies are not allowed to put two thousand tons of sand more than they were supposed to.
My sister lived a city block from here & heard & felt the collapse - I’ve driven over that bridge thousands of times including the day prior. Shocking & awful and 100% avoidable. RIP to all those lost including those never found to this day. So sad.
old bridge. Was built to withstand about half that traffic that goes over it daily. Over time, it just got weaker. They actually were working on it with that week. But that was not enough.
Wacthing this live made me sick to the stomach. Thinking of how many peoples lives were affected. The sadest part was that it was rush hour when it happened.
it's too bad your parents did nothing. I hope you have grown to have much stronger morals than that of the "it's not our problem so why help" generation/s that have passed before us. I feel sorry you went through such a traumatic experience and hope that whatever affects it has had on you lead you to be a greater person with interests in public safety/service.
It just seems like they don't build em like they used to. We live right next to the 3rd Avenue and Stone Arch bridges. Those are built solid as a rock, and they were built in the 1800's. Whatever happened to that solid construction?
I'm just gonna continue sitting here & watch this tragedy video, pray for their families, and read seboljc's messages because this nut is really making my night more entertaining. Who know maybe I'll see GodfatherAC talk about his Baseball team or the Vikings doing good this season. Oh, I don't know about the rest of you guys but, VOTE FOR MCCAIN! Not for me, but for my friend sieboljc!
Im sorry for your loss. I Lynn Deatherage was the injured in this too with my ex neighbor John Ryan and his friend Diane we all were badly hurt. My sister Dori and Alan saw this on the CNN news 📰🗞️📰🗞️📰🗞️ Dori and I decided not to tell are Mom. My back is totally messed up good. And my knees are not good either.
No one knows for sure what caused the bridge to collapse, and know what caused it could help prevent future collapses like this from happening, and of course they want to find out what caused it.. everyone knows how the towers fell, because planes hit them, and the heat melted the steel and made the buildings very weak...
I'm sure Minnesotans are thinking,"only in Minnesota, this kind of great response". Not true, born and raised there then having lived in many parts of the U.S. every community I've lived in would have responded this way. Minnesota exceptionalism-code for exceptionally rude, snooty and judgemental. See ya!!
Its ok. I just think there were bombs cause a lot of people said that it sounded like dynamite and there was one report that a homeland security van was in the area hours before the collapse. it was also right in the line of the planned NAFTA highway.
Your right sorry. :( I just felt angry because nobody planted bombs their. The gusset plates were faulty. Sorry once again i shouldnt have called them idiots. But those sounds could have been anything
You Yanks don't half get over-excited about this sort of stuff. Anyway, this is boring, haven't you got any videos of, I dunno, a plane flying into a tower or something...?
Ok, so i souldnt know what is happening in my god damm state! I LIVE HERE!! WERE DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE BRIDGE COLLAPASING?! WE SAW IT!!!! WE HEARD IT!!!! AND IT HAPPEN IN REAL TIME! NOT THE NEXT GOD DAMM DAY ON FOX NEWS!!!!

I lost my brother in this tragedy let his name be remembered 2000-2007
I know that I’m late but Rest In Peace to your brother. So sad he was only 7 years old.
I live in Minneapolis, and I was on this 2 MINUTES before it happened, we were in traffic right after the bridge, and we saw it about 500 feet behind us. Scariest moment of my life.
are youi serious?

same with my sister, she used to drive on that bridge everyday on her way to work, but she had called in sick the day it collapsed
incredible video, as always.
Vid is horrible
Bunch of trucks driving around
No vid of bridge falling or any people dying
i drove over the bridge about 6-8 hours before it happend.. i was on the way to the airport to fly out to Boston and i heard about it at the Boston Logan Airport on the news.. I was in total shock!

The emotions and running back forth is at a pitch after such a disaster.
great job filming!!
EXCELLENT VIDEO! VERY WELL FILMED
It's truely sad when state and the government step up precautions that they should have already been doing and enforcing. It always happens.
Our governor at the time infamously said that "the dirt roads by his house worked fine enough" when he was confronted about how much he defunded MnDOT. Everything falls apart either when a republican's in office, or right after they leave.
If you're in college, you should be able to write in full sentences and spell COLLEGE correctly.

@@richebronsonify Haha...yeah basically. 😅
my mom went over this bridge 2 minutes before it collapsed. she heard the news on the radio when she was driving home
i was on vacation that day. we stopped in a hotel and decided to watch the news and all that was on was this.

I live less than 10 minutes away from here and could’ve died if my mom was a little bit late
Good work. This really puts my video to shame. What kind of camera did you use?
you need to think about perusing a career in photojournalism. Even as raw footage, you got some great stuff!
The design is sound so long as the bridge is maintained and the gusset plates are of proper thickness, and so long as construction companies are not allowed to put two thousand tons of sand more than they were supposed to.
So after one bridge collapses, thousands of people are going to stand on the bridge next to it and watch?
My sister lived a city block from here & heard & felt the collapse - I’ve driven over that bridge thousands of times including the day prior. Shocking & awful and 100% avoidable. RIP to all those lost including those never found to this day. So sad.
same here, i hate looking over and thinking, "thats a long ways down"
the the plates that were bolted to the support structure leading the beams to it, the bolts were too small for the weight and they gave away

@janmadytay
There were 24 thin gussets plates (support plates).

they found problems with the support.

Whats sad is: most news stations have forgotten about this story, to covery Britney spears pimple epidemic..
Fox 9 news hasnt forgot it they fill people in about how the new bridge is coming. Yeah but i havnt see it on any other news station
i hate gravity..
We're pretty darn good people. No doubt there are a lot of them out there in the rest of the country too though. :)
Maybe more taxation is needed to pay for it all.
I hope no hot teens were destroyed by the bridge.
