    Lovely music; thanks for uploading it. I knew Sweden had at least one excellent baroque composer, so I searched on purpose and eventually discovered Johan Helmich Roman. To mark the 330th anniversary of his birth, I am now even more determined to introduce him, at least to the audience in Slovenia, where I come from. My piano student is already playing his second harpsichord sonata (now for piano) in D major. What a delight for both of us!

    When you listen to a classical piece at 6 years of age and love it, you know it’s going to stick with you forever.

    When I hear music like Johan Helmich Roman's "Drottningholmsmusiken", I am reminded that beauty still exists. I just wish his music and the music of other neglected and virtually unknown composers got more airplay on classical music stations.

    The first part of the first movement is recognised by many Swedes, if not most. However, few know where it is from, and by/for whom it was written.
    It almost feels like I am there, in the pleasantly cool garden in the late summer sunset, the music heard at a distance,
    the mingling and exchange of courtesies by guests, dressed in the finest fabrics, pearls and jewels glimmering in the light from chandeliers.
    If I could just experience that evening once ...

      Yes, I didn't know it either! Ok, I'm not completely a Swede (at the time of this composition I would have been), but anyway I've heard this many, many times on the Swedish television, especially the beginning.

    This music was indeed played at weddings. Royal Weddings. During the Wedding Night. Its original title is ”Den kungliga bilägersmusiken” that is translated into "The Royal Intercourse Music".

    • @Rattenkriegs
      @Rattenkriegs 2 роки тому +2

      A good story - and like most of those not quite true.
      Because while yes, "biläger" is an old word (like so many others) the Swedish language acquired from the German language and it CAN mean "intercourse", that's not actually the meaning here.
      Translating the original title, that was "Bilägers Musiquen" directly into "The Intercourse music" would be completely misleading.
      In fact, this name was given to all of the complete set of 24 movements written and directed by the composer Johan Helmich Roman for the royal wedding between the Swedish crown prince Adolf Fredrik and his betrothed Lovisa Ulrika between the 18th and 20th of August 1744.
      And historians agree this music was never intended to be - nor was it - performed in one piece.
      Instead it's intended for many separate and special parts of the three day long nuptial ceremony.
      "Biläger" in this instance should instead be understood either as the entire marrige - or as the ceremony that caps the wedding of - with witnesses following the royal couple into the bed chamber to see them ceremonially enter the marital bed and thus "consummate" the marriage legally.
      The actual act of intercourse is something that's obviously intended to happen later - when the witnesses (and the orchestra) have left.
      This can be seen in examples from the Swedish language Wikipedia-page for the word "biläger":
      sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bil%C3%A4ger
      Even if one doesn't read Swedish, the pictures on this site shows a painting of the "biläger" between king Karl X Gustav and his betrothed Hedvig Eleonora after their nuptial in 1654.
      It's obviously not an act of intercourse that is painted, but the highly symbolic and idealised idea of these two people entering the married bed - in the bed chamber, in front of witnesses.
      With angels blessing the marriage from the heavens above, no less.
      The second picture is the special "biläger"dress made for future king Gustav III on the occasion of the biläger of his marriage in 1766.
      Not intended to actually have intercourse in, of course, but intended for a highly important ceremonial occasion - played out in front of witnesses.
      The English language Wikipedia-page for the original German word is even more clear on this point and omits the meaning of intercourse completely.
      It basically says the word means marriage:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beilager
      So some part of the music written by Johan Helmich Roman may have been played during some part of the biläger of the wedding it was written for- we don't actually know that.
      But we can be entirely sure none was played during any actual intercourse - if that in fact even happened between the two on the actual night.

    • @Vetrarbreytin
      @Vetrarbreytin 4 роки тому +5

      If I may kindly correct you, the baroque music was not only "reserved" to aristocracy and kings. You've got to imagine that their common music that Anglo-saxon folks call "Middle of the road" nowadays was specifically that baroque one. One used to sing Bach's cantatas in Leipzig, Vivaldi's Gloria in Venice, Zelenka's Missa Omnium Sanctorum in Dresden ; one used to listen to Bach's chambermusic in Zimmermann Coffee. The "stadtmusikanten" were one of the many great ways to popularise the music in every stratum of the society. It is just kind of hard for us nowadays to imagine "the Third Estate" listening to baroque music 300 years ago but that was a fact. Drottningholmsmusiken was probably only heard by aristocracy because of its nature (made for a royal wedding) but let's not forget that Baroque music did exist also because it "fit" to its European populations. If not, it would have been different. Let's not forget also that Bach for example composed Passio / cantatas with specific rhetorical references and codes that were easily understandable by the population. We, nowadays, have lost those code and references while they were mastering it despite their "low" social condition. So it seems likely that people from third Estate in Baroque times were probably better connoisseurs and a better public, understanding everything than we actually do today.
