Fun Fact: After his rookie season in 1982 (where he hit .289), Tony Gwynn hit over .300 in ever year after that. Yes, that means from 1983 all the way to his final season in 2001 he ended up with a batting average of at least .300.
Actually it was a minimum of .309 to be exact, but that only makes it more impressive than it already was.
R.I.P. Tony Gwynn
Gojira Godzilla Godzira Gozira Zilla we all know that already 😂😂😂 please refrain from posting the obvious, it’ll help with your future intelligence 😂😂
I saw another video where the Orioles broadcasters paid tribute to Tony and they pointed out that if he had gotten 1182 more at bats and went 0 for 1182, he'd STILL be a career .300 hitter. Very impressive.
Mr. Tony Gwynn, Mr. Padre " The Greatest Hitter Of All Time." Thank you for all you brought to this world, you will be missed R.I.P. You will never be forgotten!
Not to be mean, but if you went this whole video without dropping a tear, you have no soul
+Samuel Bailor I shed tears of freedom.
Still cutting onions over Mr Padre/San Diego T. Gwynn😢
My dear baby was born in the 19th of the month...
Bumped into Ted later this night in 2014, on his way home. I attended the Jerry Coleman memorial earlier that year, but couldn't make Tony's night. Haven't been able to bring myself to view his tribute until tonight. Tears. Respect. Thank you again, Ted, for a heartfelt honoring.
He loved Baseball. Most have run in his veins. Never got the credit he deserved playing for a small market club. Nevertheless, one of the greatest hitters ever. Hard to believe he is gone. 54. Too young.
@27:48 is one of the many reasons Gwynn is Greatness.... You can see how many people's hearts he touched....
Boy he would sure be proud of his Aztecs basketball team. Playing for the 2023 natty and again a sweet 16 in 2024. #GoAztecs
Tony Gwynn #19 always in my heart. Love you forever Mr. Padre Tony Gwynn
The one and Only R.I.P. Tony "the Tiger" Gywnn!
Gwynn is now playing with deceased legends in heaven like Stan Musial, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Ty Cobb.
#LoveWins
Whoever did that 1 dislike has no freaking respect for Tony Gwynn. He was a great man of San Diego and will always be. R.I.P Tony Gwynn
I think the Dislike might be because the speakers for this event sucked ass. Who cares about hearing from politicians, agents, and MLB executives? Would have been better to hear from more of his former teammates rather than these nobodies.
Yes I agree
Three dislikes now..
@@drpolfandianethey were Maddox, Glavine, and Smoltz. All of which he owned.
There is always 1. Name is satan
Thank you Tony for your loyalty to San Diego ❤
He was an awesome person. If it was Ted Williams or just me, a 11 year old little leaguer at the time. I couldn’t ever tell the difference because there wasn’t one. If you went looking for his autograph you’d get something better and the most valuable thing anybody can give; his time and his attention. As a lifelong Padre fan growing up and still now.
We couldn’t ask for a nicer man to be the representative of our great city and our great fans. Thank you Tony. Bless your soul. I’ll never forget.
A legend. Gone too early.
Best hitter I ever saw.
I was there at Tony Gwynn's funeral. It was so emotional and sad
I'm an Astros fan. But when I heard that scouting report about Tony Gwynn by us in 1981, I was so irate that I would've told them to draft Tony Gwynn. I wish he would've been an Astro. But I don't think he would've had the same type of success then he did with the Padres. Lot of respect here. RIP Tony "Mr. Padre" Gwynn.
Why not? The hitting conditions of the Astrodome? Too many other stars on the team?
I watch this every year miss Mr. Padre
I just happened upon this article, it reminded me that people like Tony Gwynn represent what baseball is all about and displayed what a great person/baseball player he really was.

I just finished reading the comments after this article and 2 stuck out as also saying volumes about this man and what he did for the game of Baseball.
1.) "I was about 10 or 11 and my Uncle was in town from San Diego. The Padres happened to be in Philly so my Uncle picked me up and we went down to the Vet to watch the game. It was a Thursday afternoon the place was empty. We had seats down the RF line and during warm-ups Tony happened to be to be playing catch with Fernando Valenzuela. So I just sat their watching these two greats laugh and joke with each other. So they finish up and head into the dugout. Fernando jogs off and Tony comes over asks me if I have a pen signs the ball that he and Fernando were playing catch. He flips me the ball hands my pen back smiles says enjoy the game and jogs off. I will never forget it completely unsolicited and comes and signs an autograph for a kid who was just watching him play catch. The ball sits in a case on my desk where I opened my laptop yesterday only to be saddened by the news. RIP Tony."
2.) "Fantastic story! I'm from Cincinnati and am and will always be a Reds fan, but spent two unbelievable years in the Padres minor leagues. BY FAR the best baseball memory I have in the 30 years I played was one day during spring training I was hitting in a cage off a tee all by myself. Mr Padre happened to walk by after a not so pretty swing and after the Eff Bombs settled (I just couldn't get it that day) I turned around and Tony was lifting the net walking into the cage. He and I spent 30 mins talking about hitting and I got my own personal hitting lesson. I was in awe and he was completely excited talking hitting for 1/2 hour to some kid. Cut from a different mold he was. Truly one of a kind and players today should strive to be more like him...
Now, if I only would have had that lesson at like 15 instead of 22 I may have made it past A ball...
RIP - Baseball lost one of the greats!"
R.I.P. Mr Padre
Still ball like baby watching this 9 years later
RIP, Tony we will miss you
I watched this while I was at work and it was very hard to hold back the tears. Ii I was home I'd be on the bed tears flowing. I feel like I lost s brother. He's my favorite everyday day player of all time. Tom Seaver is overall my favorite.

R.I.P. Mr. Padre!!!! There will be no other like you.
Best line: 53:57 "He hits it to the left of the SS, so I move the SS to the left, then he hits the ball to the right of the SS." This fact shows he was a true great. The shift would have never worked on him.
Around 1:04 the new commissioner Manfred is hammered. Lol
We will always miss him
One of sports greatest athletes ever known and now Kobe
The Legend Tony Gwynn
you rest in peace Tony Gwynn
This beautiful rendition of the national anthem starts at 12:52 and ends 14:17
1:16:37 Very beautiful song. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think it was fitting that they held his memorial in right field.
Out the park !
#Gwynnnation

Rip
To anybody that is young if they think that chewing tobacco is cool they're dead wrong please don't start it took a great major league baseball player in Tony Gwynn.
Is it really worth it to make THAT MUCH more money to play for another team than to receive a memorial service like this?? No World Series ring can substitute for having the city mayor and the entire community honor you like this. World Series rings are about competition and individual accolades. Staying with one team and one community is about humanity, loyalty, respect, & dedication. The whole community of SD considers Gwynn to be their own. No amount of bucks can substitute for that. Plus, it wasn't like he was making nothing for the Padres. All he cared about were the Padres, the batting cage, his family, San Diego and his video room for studying pitchers. What else was he gonna do??
He doesn't need a script yet pulls out a script.
i hope others learn from his death and give up tabacco of any kind RIP TONY as much as i miss Jerry i'm glad he didn't have to live to see this
The speakers for this event mostly sucked. Would rather have seen more former teammates like Steve Finley, Greg Vaughn, Wally Joyner, Carlos Hernandez, etc.
screw you
Trevor was one of those former teammates..
Crying. ......fak!
Let's get rid of chewing tobacco please!
He doesn't need a script yet takes one up with him anyways. LAME
Please quite chewing tobacco.
Tony Gwynn Jr sounds exactly like his pops
