Thank you so much for taking us along to the fair today. My grandfather lives in Des Moines and he always used to volunteer every year for the fair, however he is 99 years old now and unable to do it anymore. We used to always come up every year and go with him. I do miss it. Thanks for sharing with us❤

What shocked me was how clean the grounds were... no litter scattered about. Craig was so happy to have his spam burger. As you and Joe said before the video, Craig had a great day.
It looks like changing his medication time has really helped with his energy level and his mood... I'm so happy for you and Craig. It shows that sometimes a little adjustment can work wonders.

I know your channel focuses on Autism, but I'm noticing a lot of parallels between Craig and my brother. My brother has Downs Syndrome, but watching your videos and hearing stories about when Craig was younger, and seeing the relationship between Livy and Craig, and Steph, Bennett and Craig is so incredibly similar to our family growing up. It's been a few years since I've been to the fair! The weather this year is perfect. I always get the fried green beans, a fried oreo, a gyro, and a fresh squeezed lemonade. And of course a stop under the beer tent. I love the art exhibits, but the people watching is always my favorite. 💜 You're so right about taking DART or a shuttle. I parked in a yard one time many years ago and got stuck! It was a rainy year, but the homeowner was sure the yard was fine. 😂 So glad you all had a good time!

I thought of some thing that may help you and Craig on your healthy eating/portion control journey. Get some munchies like dried fruits, unflavored nuts, baked crackers/chips, fresh fruit and chopped veggies, single serve lite yogurt cups to freeze (very yummy and feels like ice cream), unflavored popcorn, measure the loose foods out into ziplocks, maybe 1/4 cup or so. You can mix and match or just have one type of food per bag. If you have a specific time of day for a snack just pick out a bag and have a glass of water with it. You can also supplement the snacks with a tbsp of peanut butter or hummus for more protein, as protein keeps you fuller longer, and you can also use all different sprinkle mixes like popcorn flavorings or bagel seasoning. Craig will have the ability to make choices for himself so he can be more active with his portion control, and that will be good for independence.
I love carnival treats. Corn dogs, funnel cake AND fried Oreo's. Craig's spam egg & cheeseburger looked delicious. Your vlogs always make me SO hungry. :)

Nancy, you said something today that explains autism, that I don't recall you saying in the several months that I have been following your channel. Today, you said, (paraphrased), "Craig runs into people or cuts them off because he can't PROCESS his actions". As I have never studied autism, I use you as my guide. Thanks for explaining that; it answers a number of questions that I have. It also begs the question, could that aspect of Craig's condition change with age? Could he learn to process? Thanks for your channel; you are teaching many of us about autism and equally important, the life of the caregivers for a family member with autism. God bless you, and your family!
I don’t know if he can outgrow it but I’m hoping that he will learn to be more aware over time. In very crowded and noisy situations it’s a lot to overcome though.

I'm happy that Craig asked what the restaurants special was and then ordered cheese curds with his order, that'll help him feel confident and be able to deal with people and order his own food in the future.

My hummingbirds have been eating good! The feeders are coming up empty weekly!! I use boiling hot water and mix with sugar. No food coloring!

I love my Hey Dudes! I even turned my 86 yr old mom on to them and she loves them too. She’s always had a hard time finding shoes under $100 that don’t hurt her feet. We have a Hey Dudes outlet store a few towns over that I’ve been wanting to go check out. I’m also going to have to plan a vacation around the Iowa state fair, it looks awesome!

My child is diabetic and I tried the keto diet for some things also she has a app on her phone that has a pet and the pet that needs a walk so we walk him outside that’s great for exercise try it

Yes! We watch the news at 10 to see the fair and last night it was mostly about the politicians that were there.
Well I think by you going out like you do has a side benefit it's open up a another piece of the mystery of having a family member with this also this shows other family's that have a member of theirs that may also have some one with autism to ot be afraid to try something new far as daily interactions with the world as much as doctors feel they have more information being that they see more patients with autism his is not the case I believe it is more beneficial from the individual family's that have a member of their own family that can have more information just by trying new things. Fashioned aspects of a fair also. The quilts and photos and canned stuff n baked goods- wall beeing judged. Flower arrangements. I’ve even submitted poetry as a child. Growing up we had a rodeo and then all the foods of course. Many churches and a couple private schools etc would have a booth, such good food. Then the midway and their foods. I love the eating part also! 🤠 thanks for taking us along. I hope it’s a lot cooler for you this week. Olivia still did well, she was right up front also, which can be scary when on stage for the first time.

Nancy I'm pretty sure those yellow, metal contraptions you were seeing are for cows. They close around them to "hug" the cows when they are having procedures done. Have you ever seen the movie Temple Grandon? She was or is an autistic woman who I'm pretty sure invented these when she went away to college to self sooth herself. It's a really good movie. When I was a kid we would go to what was called Farm Progress Days. We would collect all the free things too= pens, pads of paper, yard sticks, measuring tapes and all kinds of free dairy products...LOL
I was wondering if those were the hug machines invented by Temple. I heard her speak at a symposium when Craig was little. She’s a true inspiration. ❤️
I do have to say, ever since I switch too making Joe’s clear humming bird food. The hummingbirds I have sit on the bush next to feeders all day. When it was red store bought stuff, I would see them maybe three times a day.
Me and my brothers would go around with a free bag and get all the free stuff too. One year my brothers cut all the letters out of the bumper stickers and made there own wall decorations. I remember one vividly being Pink Floyd.

Oh what i wouldnt give for even an actual temperature of 90, 117 with the heat index here in SC. 🥵 i wish our fairs where like the ones out in the midwest and western states. I will day that the main thing I used to go to the fair was, the food, a guilty pleasure. My husband's favorite is also the deep fried oreos. You couldnt pay me to go to ours. So sweet how Craig cheered on his niece and then felt so sad for her. What a sweet uncle. ❤

My daughter is 25 and took dance lessons when she was young. Unfortunately, she is not a dancer. After her recital, the teacher came up to us and said that she "displayed promise" as a dancer and if we signed her up for 3 days a week instead of one day, she would progress. Needless to say, we didn't sign her up. She is now 6'1" and played volleyball from the time she was 11. Too big to be a dancer, but perfect for volleyball, basketball, and soccer.

I would love to go to the Big E (Eastern States Expo) and see crowds like this! Connecticut Day and most weekend days are so crowded you're shoulder to shoulder in most parts of the fairgrounds, including the New England State Buildings. Craig would not be happy! The picture in picture of the storybook is brilliant. I'm sure it's much easier than trying to shoot over his shoulder!

Hummingbird feeders need to be changed and cleaned at least twice a week during summer and less often when cooler .It has nothing to do with them liking it but rather that it grows mold which kills them . If you don't have time for that it would be better to grow some hummingbird specific flowers for them .

We didn’t but it was so crowded that we may have missed it. We’re going back tomorrow or Tuesday and we’re going to look again.

Nancy, I just remembered that my sister in law used to take risperidone and you are correct, weight gain and sluggishness are side effects. I also recalled the few times we did the Great Aloha Run together and her face was super red and it appeared as is she couldn't sweat. It turns out muscle issues, fatigue, and temperature sensitivity are among the side effects. It's a good thing you changed the time from morning to night, because the heat looked brutal. Sometimes they don't notice the intensity of the heat or cold and in my sister in laws case, her skin was hot and showed little to no moisture from sweating. I'm so glad Craig got his spam burger! He really savored it and I'm strongly considering whether or not that could be lunch or dinner soon! Were there any condiments like mustard or mayo in it?❤

But that spam burger that Craig had looked it very good... And is beef burgers and fried pork loin a staple in Iowa Cuz I never heard of those two things until your video.... And I'm from Michigan

How do you handle Graig's meltdowns
We take it one meltdown at a time. No two are alike but the best thing I have discovered is to stay calm. If I get upset Craig gets more upset. It’s never easy.

Omg this is the video I was waiting for. How long has he been on the risperidone? My husband and I are thinking about putting our son on something too.
It will be a year In August. I definitely think it has helped to cut down on meltdowns and for overall calmness. The only side effects that we have noticed were sleepiness and increased appetite. But those have been better since we switched to taking it before bedtime
