Don' take the "Dork" part seriously! That's just tough love. Also: Hans's Percussive tone definitely evolved and changed throughout the various films he scored. This example specifically is from Pirates of the Caribbean, but if it gets enough attention I might do a part 2 with another score from the man.
@Alex Moukala Tutorials For some case, I can get those really EPIC percussion ("Cinematic" as shown in this video) sounding like this even on Logic Pro X or not?
"otherwise you just wasted 5 minutes of your live, bye bye" - I don't think anything else has ever motivated me quite like this. Brb. I got some epic percussion to write.
Over the past few days, I struggled to write a good percussion line. It felt lifeless, dull and synthetic. I thought, maybe Alex has a tutorial on percussion, then I watched this video. Today, I rewrote all my percussion following what you said and the improvement is massive! I'm amazed that such simple tricks can make an enormous difference like that. So I just want to say thank you for making this video and for sharing this gold-rated knowledge :D !
Hi Alex, My name is Antonio and we met in a Subway station in London (I was playing the piano). I said I'd leave you a comment and here it is! I like your videos, a lot of cool music!
This is really helpful in learning how to write huge epic percussion parts. I now understand why it's important to use mid and high pitched percussion in addition to low pitched percussion. Using all three types provides a wider frequency spectrum. I'll be applying what you said in this video.
Immediately went to apply this to my own arrangement that I'm working on. Especially fun after picking up 8dio's epic perc libraries during a flash sale.
MATE....loving your videos...Love this stuff. would love to produce these kind of big sounds...Hanz is my hero man. Thanks so much for the helpful tips and breakdown of these epic tracks. Thanks bro
The skill talk at the beginning is very true. I made a very basic synth arpeggio with a very basic synth in 3x osc. Yet somehow it doesn’t sound like I only changed the wave shape in the full mix.
lol I was just looking for what those really loud and epic cinematic drums that sound kinda like really echoey reverby low low toms with a bit of high enoo idk how to describe it to help with my pirates of the caribbean arrangement but this was even more helpful
Practice makes the master. I'll try the percussive pattern knowledge in my compositions next week (I don't know if I would be able to write five though xD)
Is it just me or doesn't the armageddon Damage ensemble or the Albion One percussions have any cymbals??? I seem to only hear drums. No cymbals or any high frequency percussion. Am I not seeing something or could you recommend an affordable (200$ range) percussion library that has everything? Thanks!
Not gonna lie, I was really hoping to see some shots of taiko being recorded because of the thumbnail and was disappointed since I play taiko but did still enjoy what you talked about here especially since I'm making the move into music making.
I have recently bought UVI Orchestral Suite. Do you have a tutorial to achieve this brass sound with that plugin? I find it very difficult. Don’t know if that plugin is not good enough tho
Brother, i gotta say lately ive been watching a lot of your videos. But I notice one thing that you need to think about - and that is to slow down when you talk. Sometimes i really cant figure out what you're saying cause youre talking so fast. But either way, thank you so much for these tutorials, they've taught me a lot so far, keep it up!
I believe there is a way there and a way back on the instruments and composers skills relationship. But true is that if you believe in limitations, they become real.
Hans Zimmer actually said himself that he is only a friend of layering if it's really necessary, as it destroyes the transients of just a single drum / hit. This is only the case of course if two similar sounds fight for the same or similar frequency range.
That's also why I recommend layering stuff with (at least slightly) different timbre. If I need just a specific timbre to be stronger, I'd just incrase the volume.
Another useful video Alex! Straight to the point! Dissecting the percussion like this is really helpful. Sometimes I try to recreate the percussion by ear, but it's difficult. This does help! Anothe question: what do you use to record your videos? And especially your audio from your DAW? I use OBS to record my Cubase projects, but I really don't like the quality, even though I set it to max. Thanks for the vid!
As I understand it, Pirates Of The Caribbean score is by Klaus Badelt, not Hans Zimmer. Zimmer produced it and gave input and helped write a some of the main themes. He was writing the Last Samurai at the time and said he wouldn't work on anything else until that score was done, so Klaus was hired.
Indeed! That main theme we all love is from Klaus Badelt. However, this specific Arrangement was written by Hans Zimmer for the third film (name of the arrangement is Drink Up Me Hearties Yo Ho).
That's the official credit, because of the contract as you say, but the theme is 100% Zimmer. He said years later in an interview(s) that he ended up going home, writing 5-6 of the main themes/suits and sending them over to his team and going from there. You never get a "Theme by Klaus" in the credits of later movies/sequels to my knowledge. It was Hans.
@@AlexMoukala Thanks for the clarification. Hans is one of my favorite composers, up there with John Williams and Howard Shore. He elevated the Pirates score when he was able to devote his full attention to it. Keep up the great work Alex.
@@drifthero6608 Seems so. I was researching and apparently he wrote some themes on synths in one night and sent them over, as you stated. The scoring for the film seems to have been a mess, with multiple composers and conductors working on it. Thanks for your input. The first films score has some interesting history.
@@TheMontoya76 It certainly does, but it's definitely got that distinctive HZ sound, despite his overlap with the last samurai...seems like a lot of composers were involved and that it was a crazy turnaround!
oh man i'm not a native english speaker and i had to turn on the subtitles to understand some things. i would really love having a longer video than a rushed 5 minute video because your information its really nice, but i don't get it completely sometimes.
