Zara Butler These oysters are cultured with a piece of the inside shell. The mother of pearl. They take these small pieces and carefully insert them into the oyster, then they are hung in nets in the bays around Akoya, Japan and allowed to mature for 5 to 7 years. They are then removed from the nets, canned with preservatives, and shipped to select buyers for their farm. I hope this answers your questions. Not all oysters however, will make a pearl, as seen tonight, there was one oyster with no pearl, and sometimes the oyster dies after the initial insertion, so obviously, it will not produce anything. As well as having a shipping option if you are going to be selling out of state or country. Therefore all things that must be considered. But again, I presume it is up to the individual, and how much work they are willing to put into it. Just my opinion, take it as you will. Have a great weekend!

For those of us who are used to mountain oysters. Why do most have the meat on her left when opened? FYI mountain oyster is what is left after you castrate a bull and they taste good too.
indigobluepics If I understand the process of culturing pearls correctly, I think that the cranberry coloured ones are usually smaller because they are not fully matured, i.e. the oyster hasn't fully finished surrounding the inclusion with nacre. The darkest pearls are from oysters that have been eradiated and when fully mature turn to black, charcoal, chocolate, dark blue or dark purple. But you might want to ask an expert to be sure.
