Phantom Thread is a better BDSM film than all of these. Also, I love how they try to get us the believe that Ana has become more domineering yet shows her actively acting like edging is too much. Okay movie.
Shocking. MK so relieved this series is finished. A hideous abusive relationship that women have adored and men have hated. So who wants what? Feminist analysis? No. Thank f""k there won't be another one. Let's try to move on.
"I don't understand the amount of vitriol and anger it inspires, because it's very, very bland." Speaking for myself, that's kind of the problem. Almost the worst thing a movie can do is bore me, and that the prior to installments somehow managed to make BDSM so bland is almost entirely my problem with them. There are bad movies I can actually enjoy on some level, but with these, there's nothing. Heck, I can even see the appeal of things like the, "Magic Mike" movies; I'm also not the audience for those, but they're reasonably well made, campy, films made to appeal to a primarily female demographic. I get that. Here... I just don't. It's a bad portrayal of BDSM culture, with bad poorly delivered dialog, bland cinematography and directing (OK, that's mostly the 2nd one), with two leads who have less than zero chemistry together. That there's nothing to even make fun of -- like the dialog in the books has -- makes these films just a chore to sit through.
Late reply but yes boring in general is 1 of the worst insults anyone/thing can get, your entire being summed up as nothing all the work, time etc to be shot down by 1 word also at least with the 1st Magic Mike it wasn't the absolute female audience leering at half naked men experience, it had a good dramatic side too, its sequel however is more stripping than acting
ballard ballard that might be more because there's not a string of good films within this genre. The books clearly sparked an interest in erotic fiction within the mainstream (presumably it was always there) and marketing enabled mass interest and a sense of acceptability in picking the book up. The films followed on that craze. Bur what else like it is in the market?
Hoopla10 The only thing that comes to my mind is a 2002 Maggie Gyllenhaal film "Secretary" that focuses on a BDSM relationship, yeah you guessed it, between a secretary and her boss. The boss is called Mr Grey. This killed me. Literally nothing is original in "Fifty Shades". Btw "Secretary" is a waaay better movie that takes waaaay more risks than "Fifty Shades", and somehow still ends up less porny.
Bit Meta then, innit. There *has* to be disproportionate vitriol from her *female* critics (simply ignoring it or just dismissing it out of hand as being something inconsequential and trivial are complete non-starters that are not simply not included as options on the menu of response options, unlike Kermode and male critics generally, who reserve their right to not actually give a flying f**k in these instances,it just isn't worth it), and there *has* to be a big, bold, rock-solid pedestrian, *very* mediocre end-product, with *all* of James' source material dialogue reproduced verbatim, exactly and in-full, straight off of the page.
I agree, I've always found it weird when people get up in arms about a film. I think the main reason why some people have a strong reaction to Fifty Shades is because it's thinly veiled rape fantasy. Personally, I don't mind if that's your thing.

The Good Doctor did not disappoint, now we wait for the prequel - 49 Shades of Grey
The horror ...
You shouldn't have written this because some Hollywood producer is actual going to make a franchise from your comment

50 shades begins

firefly4f4 and I thought sharknado was bad.

End this bloody franchise. And it's blasphemous to call the books novels!
Luvie1980 E.L. James even had the guts to call the characters "iconic". It came from a fan-fiction of a different series. It's not iconic.
It's social engineering created by the Tavistock Institute.
Luvie1980 YES you could have put her 3 "books" into a pamphlet !
This can be summarized in one sentence: E.L.James does not know what a film producer is.
Alan Stevens I'm still dumbstruck as too how the hell these books sold, got made into a movie and made quite a bit of money.
The most interesting thing from the last one was the two audience members falling down the stairs when they went to the loo on separate occasions.
Adam Page 😂
Adam Page Yes I can believe that - what s shower of poo .
This film has one good thing going for it... It will cure insomnia in about 10 minutes.
I believe there is vitriol against the franchise because it presents an abusive relationship as desirable .

"The problem is...is that it is not very good"😂😂😂
I am a terrible human being. I clicked on this video just to sit back and watch him tear through it
Watch "The Secretary" instead. It's quirky, funny, and sexy - if you fancy a bit of S&M.
I'm calling my band "Rubbish Car Chases".
Most of the flaws gets pretty much overlooked because of how attractive the lead cast are. But it will probably be in the Razzies next year no doubt.
Onmysheet they are not that attractive. I've seen some pornstars more attractive.
Missed opportunity, "fifty shades: Freesome"
Let’s be glad it’s not being shown in 4DX!!
Would that have the chair fondling your genitals?
The vitriol is due to this movie basically being Entourage for women. It's lazy consumerist, wealth porn.
one of my favourite parts of the review - "the dialogue is very terrible"
5:35 Is he a slave owner?
I am a terrible human being. I clicked on this video just to sit back and watch him rip it to shreds
the clip looked like a scene from that old tv series Sunset Beach.
"Skull scrapingly" bad dialogue . Lol
I don’t think I’d like having my skull scraped. Even in a literary/filmic sense. (Smashing review, as always.)
It’s over! We did it!
Why does having a target audience make being rubbish acceptable ?
I'm actually quite angry that this is the big "erotic" movie we get. This isn't actually a high standard to star off with.
Bit Meta then, innit.

Will you review The Happytime Murders please.
"it's not terrible, it's just ... heh..." xD
I wouldn't mind seeing Dakota Johnson in threed. Still don't think that'd be enough to go through another of these films.
I agree, I've always found it weird when people get up in arms about a film. I think the main reason why some people have a strong reaction to Fifty Shades is because it's thinly veiled rape fantasy. Personally, I don't mind if that's your thing.
Insidious Jazz It can be kind of fun it joyously hate a film as long as you know it really doesn't matter.
The real problem is that it normalises domestic abuse.
Fifty Shades Of Grey- 4/10
Fifty Shades Darker- 3/10
Fifty Shades Freed- 6/10
Freed is finally one that entertained me.
Has the Good Doctor ended up inventing the word 'accoutremental' during this review?
this is why i am purposely single during this time of year.
Mr.Bubbles “purposely”
Dakota Johnson deserves better. Jamie Dornan....probably doesn't.
Charlie Panayiotou he is a shitty actor
He was great in the series, the fall.
Im surprised Mark. You went absolutely nuts over sex in the city 2 and yet you cant see why this franchise would deserve the same vitriol? Hmmmm.
9 1/2 weeks is a better film....waaaay better!
I agree.
fifty shades three'd LOL
What was the film Kermode referenced prior to 9 1/2 weeks
Maîtresse. He mumbles the director's name, Barbet Schroeder.
Thanks!
The Trouble With Angels.
Mark, please stop saying "famously" in every review. Just because it's a story you've heard of doesn't mean it's 'famous'.
It's putting ass's in seats. Job done.
Ugh, more Tavistock puke.
