      @@CartersRemasters Well it’s pretty hard to consider something as objectively poor when it comes to something subjective in the art industry ngl. Hayden’s performance though definitely wasn’t. His ability to convey emotion and turmoil in those 2 films, especially ROtS was amazing. Anakin’s contemplation scene before his dark deeds is incredible. He just stumbled over some poorly written dialogue every once in a while but that’s not the actor’s fault at all

      @@CartersRemasters While this is true, I'd also go say that George Lucas is far more suited to writing (with someone nearby to keep him on track, like Spielberg did with the Indy movies) and supervising than he is at directing himself. He's a creative man, but just watching the behind-the-scenes footage, you can tell he's not really an "actor's director" if that makes sense. And aside from that, even if you had Orson Wells playing Anakin Skywalker, I'm not sure he could have salvaged lines like "I hate sand"

    He should understand that he was the best part of the prequels. Nobody had an issue with his performance. There was a treatise on how The Phantom Menace could have been a great movie if the story was told from Obi-Wan's perspective.

    • @itsthemumu8585
      @itsthemumu8585 Рік тому +148

      That’s one thing Phantom Menace really suffers from, is that it genuinely doesn’t have a main character. Is it Qui-Gon? No, he’s the mentor character. Is it Obi-Wan? No, he spends half the movie tucked away on the ship. Is it Anakin? I wouldn’t say that either, but in a way he’s the closest thing there is to a main protagonist.
      In all reality, these stories are supposed to be about how Darth Vader came to be, and they should’ve been told one of two ways: either put Obi-Wan as your main protagonist, and the audience sees what Obi-Wan sees. OR you make Anakin the main protagonist, and you see the tragic victim that became the machine we see in the originals. The catch is, that main character needs to be consistent in all three films. I can’t even say for sure if Anakin is the main character in Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith, but I also can’t say for sure if Obi-Wan is either.
      George had a phenomenal story going on for the prequel trilogy, this is my only main gripe aside from the fact that Hayden should’ve been playing Anakin in all three films, with Anakin being a little closer to Obi-Wan’s age. George’s big problems were this and the lack of a consistent main character (along with some dialogue issues), but the story and plot was 100% there

      @@itsthemumu8585 I grew up enjoying the phantom menace and that was never something I bothered to consider. A main character didn't mean anything to me, still doesn't. The entire prequels is more about the progression of events since it's so broad, like the avengers.

    • @itsthemumu8585
      @itsthemumu8585 Рік тому +18

      @@5PYZ3R I can agree. But if there were any solid arguments against the trilogy, it would be the lack of a consistent main character, and Anakin being so much younger than Obi-Wan.
      I still love those films, don’t get me wrong. But I can see where the flaws are. I think the story progression could’ve been done while still having a main character.
      I mean, look at the first Avengers film. Sure, all of the Avengers are protagonists, but Tony Stark is the main protagonist, and it’s clear as day. It’s a team up movie, but there’s still a single character at its center. Heck, you could make the argument that Tony Stark is the main character of all the Avengers films thus far. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers takes a very close second place in Endgame, and you could even make the argument that Endgame may have been his story just as much as Tony’s.

    • @5PYZ3R
      @5PYZ3R Рік тому +10

      @@itsthemumu8585 Wait why is Anakin being younger a problem?
      Some characters will inherently be more important than others. Stark is the bias of the Avengers like Anakin to the prequels. I grew up with both trilogies and I thought his character was so cool in the prequels, to see him as such a badass who could hold his own in a fight or a battle of wits. His vagueness was a sign of how a true Jedi would act, his nervous acting was perfect for a master of the force who controls their emotions and doesn't release them so freely. As an actor, normally that isn't a good thing to portray because you want to be a vivid character, but it's perfect for the analytical Jedi mindset

    The smoking gun is in the DVD extras for Episode 3.
    Hayden Christiansen does a scene that's really good, then Lucas calls cut, tells him to ham it way up.
    Hayden does the scene again, it's total emo cheese, and it's terrible, director calls cut, says it's, of all words, "good", and they're moving on.
    These are all very good actors following a script that was written the night before (YES IT WAS, WATCH THE DVD EXTRAS, "we have a script!"), and unfortunate direction that doesn't mirror most people's experience of emoting or seeing emotion.
    These are all wonderful talented people, and there were some unfortunate choices made, and they were not the boss, period.

      Good point. Actor's tend to get the blame for the results of a performance for obvious reasons, but they are part of a team and the director "directs" their performance if needed. An actor is often a blank body who is supposed to fulfill a vision of a director and producer, and to read lines written by another. It takes a good actor to make a a good performance out of an otherwise bad script and directing. They are not the boss of their performances and have to choose their roles wisely so as not to blemish their career.

    I never understood why the prequels were so denigrated. As a Star Wars fan I watched them and thoroughly enjoyed them. Ewan McGregor was stellar as a younger Obi Wan and it always annoys me that Hayden Christensen got pantsed for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker. The only sad bit was that Ray Park couldn’t come back as Darth Maul in the other two episodes, but then we were treated to Christopher Lee playing the openly bad guy so I don’t see the reason for the bad mouthing.
    As for the series Obi Wan with Mr McGregor . . . More! More! More! Please!

    I feep like this is a cautionary tale
    Everyone talked trash about the prequels and yes they had their flaws, but compared to the dubster fire that came after ... Its like we didnt know what we had until we lost it
    Needless to say, i think everyone today would recieve both actors playing their respective rolls with open arma

    As someone who is definitely _not_ a fan of the prequel trilogy, I'd say Ewan's performance as Obi-wan Kenobi was truly stellar given the lackluster dialogue and direction provided. If I could go back in time and bully George Lucas, I'd give him a swirly and then make him write the prequel trilogy centered on Obi-wan, because that's the only way the whole damn thing would make sense and be Good, Actually™

      He would horribly fail at that too. What was needed was the team that made the OT what it was who would fight, challenge and bypass George in virtually every decision.

      @@ToothlessDragon536 yeah, I guess I was being lazy in my time-travel shenanigans. I'd have to stick around and give him _a lot_ of swirlies

    Sad part of growing up is that nothing will ever make you feel like you did watching Star Wars for the first time as a kid. You're not a kid anymore. It's not necessarily anything wrong with the movies, you're not the same person you were.
