A place of deep and profound magic. A good place to remember and celebrate friends and family who have shuffled off this mortal coil. Summer 2022 again, without fail.
That’s beautifully summed up Galibier, Paul 💯👌 - it’s is indeed an uplifting and magical part of the world, and takes you away from the hustle and bustle of life to consider what’s most important 👍
Cheers Paul - it’s without a doubt my favourite climb of the week 🤩. Hope you and the family had a good weekend! Am just traveling back from a ride in Wales.. a broken man 😅
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy I’m certain you’ll recover swiftly after a danish or two 👍🏾. The family are doing fine, thanks very much for asking. Unfortunately my weekend isn’t over yet as sadly I’m in the middle of a 24 hour on call shift.
Ohh my God, Phil, absolutely excellent video.Thank you mate. By the way, thank you so much my sister Jane for all your camera support. And congratulations cycling team. Again the roads and scenery are excellent mate. See you in new videos Phil. With hello. Bye. Phil, you are numberone dear mate.
Thanks ever so much Atakan 🙏 - we loved this day out. Amazing to share it with friends - and for sure this was my favourite climb of the week. Absolutely must if ever you get the chance. See you in the next video - and have a great week 👍
Another Epic video phil.. Stunning, you just keep adding too my bucket list... The ebike was a brilliant idea so Jane could experience it aswell! Keep them coming Phil really enjoyable👍
Thanks ever so much Kenneth - that’s massively appreciated. And this remains my favourite climb in the French Alpes (thus far). We do love the ebike - and you’ll see in tonight’s video, Jayne used it to enable us to explore the sublime Mount Teide in Tenerife together 🤩
Agreed Matt 💯 Galibier from La Grace and Stelvio from Bormio are 2 of the 3 most beautiful long climbs I’ve ever completed - and as you’ll see in a video soon to come, Passo Giau is of the same calibre also🤩.
Great stuff! Nothing like a silky smooth surface on a hard climb, makes a world of difference. I gotta say, you're kinda my hero, dedicated, driven, articulate and one helluva climber!
Cheer Wes - that’s extremely generous of you 🙏 And with consistent training and good nutrition and recovery I’m sure you’ll soon be gliding up the climbs. I’m hoping to get back to the real world climbs as the injuries heal - I very much miss them 💯
👌 Genius Greg - I think Ruben is the Lord of the Chain Rings, and I’m more like Gollum 🤣 It was my favourite climb of the week 🤩 - and Jayne says cheers ! 🙏
Great video! I have been watching your videos as I prepare to climb Haleakala on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Your videos have been very helpful since I live at sea level in Tallahassee, Florida USA.
Thanks ever so much Don - I hugely appreciate your support and reaching out 🙏💯. And wow! 🤯 Climbing a volcano - and 55km +3000m in one climb is sensational!!! 🤩. I didn’t even realise such a climb existed!! I definitely found the altitude an issue - because London is at sea level. The more time a person spends at altitude over the years the faster they adapt - and all people are impacted in a different way. But to give you a feel for the exact impact on my power - immediately after returning from La Marmotte I did an hour of power outdoors in London using the same power meter. 1 hour 277W - vs 251W on Alpe d’Huez . I could have potentially gone a little harder on the Alpe - so reckon the altitude cost me about 20W 👍. I’ve got a little video to come on this
Thanks ever s much Richard - thats massively appreciated 🙏 And agreed - as you’ll see I discovered this for La Marmotte - I really didn’t want to climb the final ascent of Alpe d’Huez - but the mind took over and demanded it ! 😅
Thanks Martin 🙏 - this is definitely one of my favourite days in the saddle, and likely the most beautiful climb I’ve ever done 💯🤩. Not the best prep … but worth it 😁👌
wow mate, thanks for sharing your experience, a poet, philosopher and cyclist all rolled into one, its amazing what opens up with the world of health and fitness when combined with cycling. tell you what ... you see those single tracks off to the left and right at the top, well I'd be taking you down those as well - on a gravel bike of course, ripper. Great to see e-Jane :-) be part of the journey. no good doing this stuff on your own. brilliant!
Our pleasure for sharing this flow cycling 💯 - and thanks ever so much for reaching out with such a wonderful and supportive comment 🙏💪 . I have indeed found cycling incredible for leaving the stresses of the world behind for a few hours, and also actually enjoying the countryside (I’m not really into hiking … ). But to your point the issue is on holiday or weekends, it’s quite a chunk of time so the e-bike for Jayne can be a game changer 👌. I’m guessing the gravel riding in the Alps is on another level - a bit like the Lake District, and when my skills improve, it’s something I may well give a go.. Cheers 👍
It sure was the perfect day Thomas 🤩 - was incredible to spend it with you 👌. The bonus climb was a toughie 😅 - and I remember the relief when you tracked down the water in the village 💯
Thats super kind of you Adam 🙏 - this was most definitely my favourite climb of the week, a must do if you haven’t already 💯 . It’s been lashing down in London also …. But looks a bit better next week 🤞
I enjoyed the video. Great climbs and the atmosphere appears so fresh and crisp. However, I always feel short changed when videos don't start with yout trademark cheery "Welcome one and all......"
Thanks Clive 🙏 Galibier from La Grave direction was most definitely my favourite climb in the French Alps . I preferred this vs from the Telegraph for La Marmotte . Fresh, crisp and uplifting 👌🤩
Epic climb in the beautiful Alps. we see the pros fly up these climbs surrounded by throngs of fans but it's great to see fellow amateur cyclists give a more moderated perspective on the climb for us wanna be pros. Lol. La Marmotte has been high on my list of Fondos to complete before my body quits.....
Hi James - and thanks ever so much for your lovely message. For sure Galibier from La Grave was my favourite climb - likely ever. Absolutely sensational a and definitely if you do La Marmotte go out a few days early or stay later in order to savour it 👌🤩.
Agreed, JK, - the beauty took my breath away also, a feel good part of the world, no doubt 💯 I climbed it from the other side during La Marmotte - as you’ll see next weekend. Very beautiful too 🤩
Cheers Gavin 🙏 - was definitely my favourite climb that week in the Alps . I definitely preferred Galibier from La Grave as per this video - an absolute must 🤩
It’s an absolute beast isn’t it, Andrew! Intimidating but sublimely beautiful all at the same time🤩. The nice thing about the route from La Grave, is that it gradually keeps revealing a little bit more then a little bit more as you progress up 👌
I couldn’t agree more Radoslaw 💯 - I adored my time in the Alps, and this was the best climb of the week, a very happy memory 🤩 Hope you are keeping well 👍
Beautiful video work Phil 👍 Had the pleasure of Alpe d Huez with my wife in 2019 after a few weeks in the Pyrenees and the stunning Vercors region. My favourite of all was the descent to Arreau from the Aspin….had to pinch myself that it was real. I do hope you do a whole series on the many mountain’s in France and Spain….not to mention Italy. Should keep you busy for a few decades! Hope to one day return, both of us that is, and ride some of the ones we missed.
Thanks ever so much Matt 🙏 - it’s an absolute pleasure to film and edit these little adventures 💯. I was due to visit the Pyrenees for the Haute Route Ventoux last weekend, but had to postpone due to work and family pressures. I’ll look out for that when I’m out there . And for sure, the intent is to continue to explore into 2022 👌
Immediately brings back the memories... I really can't wait to get back there. Col de Galibier is very much on the list. However, I can also recommend Col d'Izoard (very pretty, especially the south side), and Col de l'Iseran (also from the south side). So far only rode them by car, but my god the landscape is to die for. And Ruben making that climb look so easy, while it really isn't. That's proper hard work. And kudo's to everyone who makes it to the top...
Very happy memories, Marco 💯 👌 - and for sure you should climb it next year - it won’t disappoint ! I’ll check out Col d’Izoard also - you are a connoisseur of such things - so it must be spectacular 🤩. Ruben is definately on another level 💯
Beautiful scenery Phil what a brilliant film loved it.. well done on the climbs.. roads look amazing and the views are simply jaw dropping.. excellent filming and narrating to 🚴👍😀🤟
Thanks ever so much Pete - we hugely appreciate your super kind support and encouragement🙏. It was my favourite climb from the week, absolutely spectacular 🤩 - and the quality and beauty of the French engineering for the roads was also on another level 👌
Looks awesome! I've not done any European cycling. Wanted to visit Swiss alps first as I rode a motorbike in that area and loved it. Now I've seen this I might visit France first!
It’s a must visit part of the world for a cyclist Peter💯 - and this was my favourite climb of the week - sublime 🤩 I too would love to cycle in the Swiss Alps - they look incredible too 👌
Phil - that is a cracking climb up Lauteret onto Galibier. I crawled my way up it in 2020 all the way from Bourg D'Osains. The effects of altitude were quite apparent to me aswell.....Lol.
Cheers, Greg 🙏 - and agreed the section from Lautaret to Col du Galibier is unrelenting epic 🤩 And to climb all the way from Bourg D’Osains adds a lot of climbing into the equation !!! I filmed a little video to demonstrate the impact of altitude on my own athletic performance shortly after arriving back home - it was surprising to me 💯
Wow, m bee !! 💪 Must have been an incredible couple of days. To see the tour power up those mountain passes would be absolutely epic . Agreed, stunning 🤩
It sure is Nick 💯🤩 - and this has been my big discovery over the last 18 months since Exmoor last year . My own journey started as one about fitness and racing, but has become more more focused on little adventures and exploring the countryside👌
Stunning footage Phil, looks like you enjoyed good weather and great company. I was fortunate enough to climb the Galibier in 1987 on the day that the Tour de France came over. I had panniers on a steel touring bike and a 28 sprocket on a compact 6 block…..great memories. Enjoy your stay out there, it’s a very special place.
Thanks ever so much Andrew 🙏 - Jayne and I were made to feel ever so welcome by Ruben and all his friends, plus we were super lucky to have such an amazing day - on what turned out to be my favourite climb of the week 🤩 You did amazingly well to climb that on a steel bike laden with luggage and a 28!!! 🤯 But what a prize at the top - seeing the Tour come through - must have been sensational 👌
Our pleasure Lee ! And for sure if you are going to tour Europe - this was most definitely my personal favourite climb from the week in the Alps. Stunning is the word 💯
Your love of pushing your own limits whilst exploring the most beautiful roads you can find is absolutely contagious Phill. That's why I ride my bike too, it doesn't get any more rewarding than pushing my own physical limits whilst taking in the best bits of the earth! Hope our ride in Wales can even be 10% as stunning as this looked!
Agreed, Nick 💯 - for me I love the combination of enjoying the day out and the scenery, and putting in a couple of efforts on some climbs - Davide showed me the joy of this in Italy last year 👌. And for sure - looking forward to it, and praying to the weather gods 🤞😁
It’s our pleasure, Simon - we love meeting friends, filming and then the edit - and so pleased that you’re enjoying your them🙏 . It’s very motivating for us 💯
Cheers Paul - it was a wonderful day, we were super lucky 🤩 - and for sure it’s a must visit part of the world - and this was my favourite climb of the week 💯
Fantastic scenery Phil on what looked like a stunning day in the mountains. Ironically I watched this in Scotland (we're on a weekend break) having just driven through some amazing scenery in the northern mountains. Though it was lashing it down and blowing a hooligan here. Definitely not riding weather.
Happy holidays, Tony !! Scotland can be incredible in the early Autumn - beautiful (when not lashing down….). Galibier from this direction was definitely my favourite climb of the week - and what a day 🤩. Enjoy your break 👍
The lady on the bike is indeed an Angel for putting up with me, Suds 😅 - but her climbing would not be so angelic if it weren’t for the electric motor 🤣
What an amazing experience. Thanx from bring it to us at this level getting to see some things on the way. Seems like not many things grow up at that hight and mostly likely due to the air availability. Also Thanx to Jane for pacing us up all the way - wonder how many what's she was pushing out on average ...
It was an incredible experience, Zaahier - and this was my favourite climb of the week🤩💯 And thanks ever so much - we loved filming and editing this one 👌 I think there is packed snow towards the top as late as May / June - hence not much grows . Jayne is the perfect motor pacer 😅 - and congratulations again to you for your mammoth ride this weekend 💪✊
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Thanx so much Phill. I had some big jumps in hours over the last 2 months from those regular 1hrs sessions I got use to since I got back on the bike in February. I think I need a few days of rest and talk about a mammoth ride once can clearly say that the amount of meters of climbing you are packing out is unbelievable. Climbing and keeping the cadence relatively high is a challenge. Was wondering what your thoughts was on the watts and zones and applying them to these massive real life climbs. Doing those 1 or 2hr indoors sessions in those zones compared to the real life climbs could be rather different ... Anyways ... Cheers and looking forwards as usual
Absolutely stunning views. Love seeing the difference an electric bike makes. Did we hear a reply of "Aw'right there" to your "Bonjour" 08:00 bet that wasn't expected :) Finally, your piece towards the end regarding the benefits of being out on a bike, exploring and absorbing, is what I've really missed over the last 18 months - looking forward to 2022 and already planning rediscovering those adventures.
Thanks ever so much for your lovely comment Jonathan 🙏 - and for sure the electric bike makes cycling and exploring so much more accessible. Yes - it was indeed an Aw’right 🤣. The element of being able to enjoy so much more of the countryside has been one of the most amazing discoveries of cycling (as someone who doesn’t enjoy hiking) - enjoy the process of formulating your adventures for 2022 💯
Hello Phil. I’ve just discovered your channel, and I must say it’s a delight to meet you! I appreciate your positive energy and smiles, leave me feeling inspired, and so, thanks for sharing. I started cycling 3 years ago and love it but haven’t got into it to the level you seem to have - well done you! PS my wife’s Dutch and I wouldn’t want you pronouncing your new favourite topping slightly incorrectly- the “stroop” in appelstroop is pronounced like the English word hope. So, “str” “ope”. I think the Dutchies in your chalet were being too polite!
Thanks ever so much SPSggl 🙏 - and I massively appreciate you reaching out ! Ruben and the other Dutchies were super lovely to Jayne and I - so thanks for providing the correct pronunciation🙏. Strope it will be - I do love that stuff - nitroglycerin for the cyclist 💪🤣. We must have started around the same time - and I’m so glad I found the sport. I found a polarised approach to training plus a Zwift race per week over the winter great to build the fitness 💯
Thank you for a brilliant video on what seems to be the lesser documented side of the Galibier, sometimes you just stumble upon hidden gems on UA-cam, you have a new subscriber! I am heading to Bourg d'Oisans from Scotland in a few weeks and plan to take try out both these cols at some point. What is your verdict on cycling through the tunnels on the road from the dam up to Col du Lautaret? I have heard mixed reviews, but your video makes them look very manageable and sensible as long as you keep your wits about you... is this the case?
Thanks ever so much Sam - that’s really lovely of you 🙏. For sure having ridden Galibier from the Telegraph for La Marmotte and also here from La Grave - I much preferred La Grave. It’s a feel good climb and visually more spectacular - loved it . The tunnels are fine - if you have a rear light and take off your sun glasses (or have lenses that cope ok in the dark). I take them carefully on the descent . Have an incredible time - and stay safe 👍
Great video Phil. It takes me back to my time living near to Briancon. Good call on the pacing stratergy for the marmotte. The telegraph followed by the galibier soon become far from two separate climbs did you find? The rest inbetween just being a blur. And Alpe d'huez at the end is never anything like riding as a single ascent! Looking forward to your marmotte video.
Thanks ever so much Simon 🙏 - you were lucky to live there 🤩 Yep - I was glad I reduced my target power, because everything you say I too found. It’s a long old climb up the Telegraph and Galibier - very little respite …. and the Alpe at the end was a slog !!! Marmotte video is in edit - and will be released next Sunday 🤞
I’ve skied a few times in the alps and the rockies, I was completely fine at Alpe d’huez and la plagne (2200) but holy moly I was bad at Breckenridge at 3000m, I went back there and took anti altitude medicine which helped a bit. It felt like I had a weird kind of flu… no way could I have ridden my bike!
At 3000m it doesn’t surprise me that you struggled - but symptoms like flu !!! Wow! I felt pretty similar all the way up Galibier - no loss or power from bottom to top - but definately lower power than I’d have had at sea level from bottom to top 😅
another awesome video says he watching 2 years later !😃 anyway chapeau to you however just noted you are out of the saddle quite a bit in what appears to be quite a high gear and low cadence..personal preference however how was it cycling a long alpine climb ?
Hi Chris - that’s very kind of you🙏. At low tempo I like to spend time out the saddle to get different muscles involved and generally for comfort. At higher power I’ll try and stay in the saddle and focus on the cadence - until I need to hit the turbo or the gradient gets too steep
Absolutely gorgeous views, and it seems like the weather was absolutely perfect for this group escapade as well. :) Did the group feel much of a difference once you got over 2000m elevation on these climbs? Apparently that's roughly the point where you'd start noticing the air get thinner.
Agreed - a sublime climb on a perfect day, Lord 🤩! The issue we faced was living at 2000m raises the HR and worsens the sleep initially - so a few of us suffered with higher HR for a given power. I noticed the difference all week - and filmed a little comparison to illustrate the impact when back in London . More to come 👍
Hi Messi - I weighed about 62kg that week - and given the gradients were generally not that steep on Galibier 12-16km/h is about right for the power for me. 👍
10:30 talking to Jayne's behind, at 200 watts & 16 km/h 🤣 Fantastic draft from her, so funny to see people sucking her wheel 😃 Last weekend my GF and I took part in an event on our eBikes (I think there were over 1000 cyclists, she made a little video collecting our images - ua-cam.com/video/ggPgqn8jbyo/v-deo.html ) and it's so funny to see the reactions, there were snobs but there were mostly open-minded people 😎 the col was closed to circulation from both sides for the day, amazing.
Can’t beat a little motor pacing, Pierre-Alain 😁 - and for sure e-bikes are the future. They make cycling accessible for all and allow friends and facilities to enjoy the climbs and vistas together 💯. I loved the video Angela and yourself made 👌 Col du Klausen is beautiful - cobbles switchbacks and sensational views back down the mountain 🤩 . Definitely looking forward to seeing more 👍
You have no idea how much I look forward to these videos!

Wow, m bee !! 💪 Must have been an incredible couple of days. To see the tour power up those mountain passes would be absolutely epic . Agreed, stunning 🤩
This is why we put all the hard work in to enjoy breathtaking climbs and stunning views another cracking production nice one Phill & Jayne 👍
Wow Phill that's stunning, another amazing video, I know where i'm heading next year! 😃
Many thanks!
I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. Thank you!
It’s our pleasure, Simon - we love meeting friends, filming and then the edit - and so pleased that you’re enjoying your them🙏 . It’s very motivating for us 💯
Beautiful footage 😁
Thanks ever so much Mike 🙏 - the weather enabled us to justice to the vistas 🤩 - the perfect climb 👌
WOW Phil, that was stunning, i need to get this trip booked
The lady on the mountain bike is cycling like an angel!
edit - until I saw the motor
The element of being able to enjoy so much more of the countryside has been one of the most amazing discoveries of cycling (as someone who doesn’t enjoy hiking) - enjoy the process of formulating your adventures for 2022 💯
Jayne travelling in style! Also UA-camr life summed up @10:30 - motorcyclists off to the right wondering why you are talking to a rear wheel.
Jayne gliding up her second Col of the week like a BOSS 😁 - yep, you almost become oblivious to how ridiculous it must seem to folk 🤣
Brill 👏
Cheers Gazza ! 🙏 Highly recommend this climb 💯🤩
Wow! I felt pretty similar all the way up Galibier - no loss or power from bottom to top - but definately lower power than I’d have had at sea level from bottom to top 😅
beautiful video what you used? only gopro? thanks
Hi afreakinmeo - yes x2 GoPros - front and rear of Jayne’s bike 👍
another awesome video says he watching 2 years later !😃 anyway chapeau to you however just noted you are out of the saddle quite a bit in what appears to be quite a high gear and low cadence..personal preference however how was it cycling a long alpine climb ?
Hi Chris - that’s very kind of you🙏. At low tempo I like to spend time out the saddle to get different muscles involved and generally for comfort. At higher power I’ll try and stay in the saddle and focus on the cadence - until I need to hit the turbo or the gradient gets too steep
I thought Jayne was making fun of you doing it on a Mtb till I saw the motor 😉🤣
🤣 PKB !! Yep - that thing weighs as much as a fire engine - but climbs like an Angel 💯💪
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy I really hope you're talking about the bike..?
@@PK_Blinder 🤣😁🤣 - yes - the Wilier !!!
I've said this before, those views are outstanding!! I HAVE to do this. Did your wife hire the electric bike or take it with her??
Hi. We hired the e-bike from Cycle Huez. Made for a very easy climb 😊
@@jaynes6813 Thanks! I'm hoping to get my wife interested in climbing with me, for those epic views!! The electric bike will help her.
Good to chat on Instagram Dominique - as noted we hired from Cycle Huez, at the top of Alpe d’Huez 👌. Wonderful family owned company. Ask for Ollie 👍
Absolutely gorgeous views, and it seems like the weather was absolutely perfect for this group escapade as well. :)
Did the group feel much of a difference once you got over 2000m elevation on these climbs? Apparently that's roughly the point where you'd start noticing the air get thinner.
Agreed - a sublime climb on a perfect day, Lord 🤩! The issue we faced was living at 2000m raises the HR and worsens the sleep initially - so a few of us suffered with higher HR for a given power. I noticed the difference all week - and filmed a little comparison to illustrate the impact when back in London . More to come 👍
at the very start of the video, which cafe/bistrot are you having breakfast at ? is it in La Grave ?
Feels like your speed at those gradients don't go along with the watts unless you are rather light, is this so?
Hi Messi - I weighed about 62kg that week - and given the gradients were generally not that steep on Galibier 12-16km/h is about right for the power for me. 👍
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Thanks! And well yes, 62 is light in my eyes, as it is lighter than me ;)
a little more picturesque than scunthorpe.
🤣 FoundFoundFound - agreed, not a bad little part of the globe 🤩 - a must visit chunk of geology 💯
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy a long way from the ‘excitements’ of east cheam.
10:30 talking to Jayne's behind, at 200 watts & 16 km/h 🤣
Fantastic draft from her, so funny to see people sucking her wheel 😃 Last weekend my GF and I took part in an event on our eBikes (I think there were over 1000 cyclists, she made a little video collecting our images - ua-cam.com/video/ggPgqn8jbyo/v-deo.html ) and it's so funny to see the reactions, there were snobs but there were mostly open-minded people 😎 the col was closed to circulation from both sides for the day, amazing.
Definitely looking forward to seeing more 👍
oh, that girl on a mountain bike, she's very relaxed ... i bet she's got a heart rate much lower than anyone of you guys .. lol !!
Jayne sure was sailing along nonchalantly - and I doubt her HR got much over 100bpm ! 😁
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy was that an e-bike that she was riding on?
Why are women on ebikes always sitting way too low on the saddle and why is their cadence never higher than 50 ?
Sarenne > Alpe d'Huez.
Agreed Juraj 💯- in my opinion a prettier climb also 🤩
How patronising are you to women?
Not intended - and I’m not sure how
i don't know what you watched @Drew but i didn't see any patronisation, just friends riding up a legendary climb together, and encouragement.
@@pawsan69 cheers Paul 🙏
